I'd love to see that last piece colored in a flat cell style, kinda like a Bashki flick. The nice cartoony line would complementent the image in a differnt way than your watercolor/pencil style (that is cool too though). It would look real pro with some slick flats. Fire up the free gimpshop and give it a go, you color sense is great so it should be easy!

Cheers

Great linework btw, kinda geoff darrow feel to it (really hard to do well).

If you just want to get your work out there in print, the retro gaming systems all need lots and lots of art. And your illos are perfect for them to a T. BFRPG, LL, Osric (not to be named), et al.

Heck, send in some samples to Goodman games, your stuff is really good, it has that great pro but not professional feel to it- still hungry!

Nice developed style that has moved past the amateurish stages. Have you ever seen the early Bone stuff that Jeff Smith did in college? 10 years later he was rockin Bone in comics and it was like this really mature, really authentic style that came out of nowhere. That is what I am getting from your linework. I hope you didn't color the original b/w drawings ;p

Thanks for the tip....but alas, I don't even own Photoshop.

I know, I know...."what the.....?!!!"

Heck, I just put these up here because I figure it's better than doodling them and sticking them in a stack to collect dust bunnies over time. My scanner is a cheap piece of junk and only allows me to scan real small pages...which is unfortunate, because most of my "better" stuff is on larger sized bristol board. Most of these are just little ideas I jotted down on typical typing paper to keep the ol' fingers limber, so to speak.

But if I ever get a nice scanner and Photoshop, I'll put your advice to use. Thanks again.

Gimpshop! It is free and a nice clone of photoshop, get it!

After looking thru the whole thread, I gotta say wow again. Your stuff is ready to go. And like I said above Labyrinth Lords, Osric, BFRPG, swords & wizardry all need lots of art! I don't think they could pay you, but most of your stuff could be immediately dropped right into their books and you would get great exposure (and keep the copyright).

Then you can do the summertime con tours to make the ez sketch/print money.

And with your sweet (really, really sweet) inking anything other than flat animation coloring would be a tragedy (kinda like how your grey washes are kinda flat and awesome).

See if you can find any Rob Haynes comics from the past 10 years to see what I am talking about. He and his colorist are a team. Hell, Rob draws on typing paper with a flat micron line, but the colors and the compositions sing an opera.

Thanks for the kind words, papercut and Aladar...speaking of free work, I've done some free illos for Chris over at Dragonsfoot for his game and since I've been showing my doodles on various sites around the net that deal with old school RPG's, I've had one commission requested. Not exactly a stellar resume but I'm just gonna keep pluggin' along and drawing. Before I started coming here and a couple of other places, I hadn't picked up a pencil in a good 6 or 7 years, give or take, but I've met some really cool people that have been super encouraging and it's helped get me motivated again.

I want to get a few more pieces done before I really try and get any kind of paying work with small publishers. Aside from that, I'll keep putting my drawings in here and other sites just for fun.

There is tons and tons of value in getting all that exposure for work done years and years ago. Every piece that ever sees print is another notch, something he can sell for a premium (original art), make prints of, and generally pimp. Gamers like what they like, but they don't always know what they like til they see it.

Osrik (the game to be never named) has had about 20k downloads. I know that is not world breaking, but it is nothing to sneeze at either. That is way more than most indy books and some DC comics. Dropping preexisting art in there (or something akin) is way more valuable that getting $25-50 for an illo in some indy rag that no one will read (at least until he gets a rep).

I know what ya mean, money is nice- just spent way to much in Disney Sea Tokyo.

Cheers!

The number of free downloads something has is meaningless. Pretty much anyone will download something they don't have to pay for, even if they never use it.

In this industry, cash is the sincerest form of flattery a commercial artist can have. ^_~`

You don't have to see it that way, because most Indie authors have little money and like many artists make things for the sheer pleasure of it.

So if you find someone you gel with, you could make and sell your own games with them. The hardest part is finding a person who can finish what they start, because I'm sorry to say that the majority of people out there are flakes.

On the other hand if you go the freelance only route you'll get paid upfront and it won't matter if the other guy finishes what he's working on. The only downside is you probably won't be working on anything you like.

EDIT:

I've just got to say that I love the colouring on these pictures.

Haven't posted anything in a good while and with October upon us, I figured I'd post a "Halloween themed" adventure pic.

Thanks, Aladar....much appreciated.

I'm glad you could tell that was a Penangallon.....I've always wanted to draw one in a picture of mine. I figured one would fit well in this type of setting.

Lost Caverns of Tsojanth for the previous pictures inspiration. Only place I remember fighting a bunch of Chasme demons at least.

Glad

Great drawing! & he is my "fav" demon lord... My best paladin went toe to toe with him. I had to so the rest of the party could run away as I fought a tactical withdraw.

Yeah, I've always been kinduv partial to him too. Ever since that great Dragon magazine cover (#119) by Daniel R. Horne back in the day.

Glad you like it.

Couple pics I did for AliveAndOutOfPrint.org's site banner. These were my version of the original DM's guide's sketches on pages 170 thru 173.

K2H - it was an epic fighting withdraw By the time I made it back into the shrine that the party ran into, I was VERY busted up. Magic armor dented and magic shield ruined

Glad GREAT Old school drawings there!
