Standard Rates for RPG Artwork

Maybe Pete or Jason would answer this. I was wondering what the going rate is for rpg artwork. I am sure there is a variance according to skill, reputation, and what work is done. What can a new, unknown artist expect on a single b&W drawing, and then what about a cover? I have no idea whatsoever.

HAHAHA! Standard rate.. *wheeze cough choke*

No such thing mate.

Now. Some dim witted companies like to go with the New York publishing house rates, which make their products very expensive, and they go out of business very quickly.

Your far better off finding out what companies are willing to pay (in some cases not a whole lot) and going with that.

But one important thing. Find out what rights to the work they want. If the company wants full rights to a picture, jack up the rates accordingly. If they are willing to give you print rights, its generally ok to go with whatever rate they are offering, cause you can make prints, tishirts and whatnot later and make up for the time you put in the work.

Generally your going to see a better return on cover art than interior.

I've received payments from $10 to $100 for a black and white sketch and $300 to $1500 for a cover.

Just depends on the company.
