RuneQuest II

Post by Piperdog »

Lately I have been reading my RuneQuest II book; I skimmed it once long ago, but I have never played any BRP type game before, so set it aside. Lately though, I gave it a solid read or two, then got the OpenQuest book as well. I am really digging this. I like "roll under skill" games, and may give it a try. While not a fan of the official setting for RuneQuest, the mongoose RuneQuest II is a nice system, with crunchy bits you can add or take away. The combat seems pretty brutal as well, and hit points by body part is cool...but I can see combats taking forever that way. They do suggest not using hit point locations for most baddies, just major monsters and npc's. I think the magic system is cool too.

OpenQuest is really appealing because it is so rules lite on it's approach. Very cool. No hit point locations or crunchy madness here to slow your combats down. Skills are much broader, nearly identical with the skill list in say, Savage Worlds. You don't have longsword skill, two-handed sword skill, axe skill, knife skill, .....just Close Combat skill. There is Ranged Weapon skill, and so on. It looks very solid for beginners or those who normally have a hatred for skill based games with a laundry list of skills.

Perhaps sir, you should run a short game at GenCon so that I may experience this game. ;)

At one time I wanted to convert the SRD over to the Chaosium system. It turned out to be a fair amount of work and I never completed it. One day I may get back to it.
