Re: new Marvel game
Nice to see renaissance of the super hero genre. With DC Adventures, over at Green Ronin, I guess it was only a matter of time to see Marvel back in rpg's.
Unlike DC Adventures, it is interesting that MWP is taking the meta-plot route.
I am not a fan of meta-plots, nor their spotlight on playing established heroes. Though it does help that the biggest, old, complaint that it is hard to play in an established world with new builds. I never really understood that, but enough people had a problem with it.
Personally I like the direction DC Adventures is going with the main book (Rules, builds etc.) then releasing portfolio type books with heroes and villains stated up for the game.
It'll be interesting to see how well Cortex can handle high powered characters. From what I've seen of the rules system it doesn't really seem that robust to handle such a wide variance. I'm guessing they've broke it down and built it back-up to handle this.

Once you’ve mastered the Basic Game, MARVEL HEROES opens the door to fan-favorite crossover events in the history of the Marvel Universe. Presented as fantastic open-ended adventure books, you take the roles of Marvel characters tied to these events. Make your own choices, engage in world-shaking battles, and seize your own heroic destiny! From Marvel’s Civil War to the Age of Apocalypse, every MARVEL HEROES Event is its own self-contained epic adventure series, ready to play.

Re: new Marvel game
I'm still a fan of the old TSR MSHRPG, but I'm definitely intrigued by this.
I'm also ambivalent about meta-plots. I suspect that it reflects a trend in the comic books themselves over the last couple of decades, at least from what I can tell at a cursory glance.
I own and have read through a few Cortex PDFs, but not played them. The system is similar enough to Savage Worlds that they make for relatively easy conversion. I've heard the same comment about Savage Worlds, that it can't handle high-powered supers - and this was from fans of SW, not critics. I'm not sure I agree, but I'll be interested to see how Cortex handles it.

I'm more of a make my own character kind of guy. Don't get me wrong, I liked playing some of the established characters for some of those Marvel modules back in the day. I seem to remember the old one being available in pdf at some site. Is that going to be pulled? I'd love to have it. As for the new game, who knows. I'm happy for Marg Weis that they're still kicking after Firefly, BSG, and Dragonlance. On the topic of Sav Worlds supers, I've only played through the Necessary Evil plot point. Sytem seemed to work well enough for that. Haven't played any uber-high cosmic heroes.

http://www.classicmarvelforever.com/cms/ Go to the "Other Stuff" menu item, then Downloads. Just about everything every published is there. Good stuff.
Ya, I liked making my own heroes too. If they don't have any sort of character generation system, then I'd be less enthused.

Yep. Heard about this at Gen Con. My FLGS clerk/friend mused at how they're going to manage getting 13 products the first year when they've had so many issues with releases in the past. I like me a good supers game, so I'm looking forward to this. But I'm not not on the MWP bandwagon, just yet.

My only experience with Margret Weiss and Cortex system games was the 'Firefly' game. I was not impressed with Cortex, nor the 'storyteller' design style of play.
Now, while MSHRPG of the 80's was a great game, my group is currently playing ICONS, and having a blast!!
If you haven't tried ICONS, I'd recommend you do. It took the framework of MSHRPG and made it less crunchy, and faster to play.

They have said that they really cleaned it up since Firefly as you weren't the only one to complain about it. I don't mind Cortex but it certainly isn't one of my favourite systems.ThrorII wrote:My only experience with Margret Weiss and Cortex system games was the 'Firefly' game. (Though they do get some pretty good licenses.)
