Yeah, The Forge fan favorites like Risus and The Window are like that, too. I pretty much say "umm, no. It might be able to do it, but that doesn't mean it does it right." But, hey, whatever... there never will be a game that can do everything. Or, such a game would have no rules.

Now, see, I like Risus. Good beer n' pretzels gaming. But I still wouldn't want it shoved down my throat. It has its place--don't try to act as if it's a perfect stand-in for HERO or Rolemaster, and we'll be fine, you know?

Yep. Every game has its place, and those who enjoy them. It just happens that, for some, the place for some particular game is the garbage bin. It might have nothing to do with the game itself, the rules or whatever, but it could be the style it was written in, or the art, or some other minute piece of personal dislike... can't please everyone, nor should someone try.

Yeah that was it! I still have it in storage! I'm not really saying the game was bad as I never got a chance to see.
I guess I just failed my INT check to read and understand it.
Man that book was HUGE!

Yep that book is a cure for insomnia. I have the same version and have only read about 300 pages in it cause i keep taking naps. Oh and 6th edition should hit this summer .

Out of curiousity, why is Hero going to a 6th Edition?
Mind you, I have never attempted to examine this system - primarily because of the gigantic tome that was involved and the alleged complexity of the system which was supposed to be on par with Rolemaster, Math: The Equating, and NASA's plans for developing a new Space Shuttle with Lunar landing capability. With a new six edition coming out this further sends up warning signals that I do not want to get involved with this product, short of a home ready for a sleep disorder.
All that being said, is it multi-genre or strictly limited to Champions?
Last question, how does this game play?

I can't think of any I truly hate, many that I have no desire to play, but none I really hate.

I can't stand White Wolf's World of Dorkness games. I also have no use for any CCGs.

Robo Rally ~ another game I hate, er, dislike intensely. My typical gaming group are a bunch of engineers and software guys, so this game seems to be their wet dream. I guess my brain just doesn't work in those ways as thinking so far ahead like that, particularly in this boardgame makes me want to freak out. I'd rather play checkers... and god do I hate that boring ass game too.

as far as systems, the only one i found that i totally disliked was shatterzone. (as the rules of the thread stats i cannot say 4e). now I like systems that no one will play due to their lack of depth like tunnells and trolls. but thats me
Now serleran, how can u hate euchre. its the perfect mindless cardgame to play at work. we currently play cribbage since there are six of us but if there are four the euche it is.

There are a couple games that I don't dislike, but that I don't see what the fuss is about... RoboRally is one of them. Another one is Settlers of Catan. I seem to be one of the few gamers I know that doesn't think Settlers is the best thing ever.

I think HERO 6th will cover many genres. Not just Champions. I played very little 2nd edition(?) back in the 80's, and some 5th in recent years. Mind you, I said I PLAYED. Didn't run the game. God no. If you've got a world class HERO gm...have fun. If not...good luck with that character creation, and some of the mechanics.
Can't comment on Robo-rally. Haven't played it. I've watched people play Settlers of Catan. Meh. Resource games usually aren't my thing, unless it involves a healthy dose of combat, and world domination. That said, I used to run games for the defunct/re-formed Eagle Games. I was given a free copy of Railroad Tycoon(among other games). I'm not Mr. Railroad-gamer by any means, but I actually enjoyed it. Admittedly some railcars with cannons, and tycoons literally battling it out would have been nice. Damn, I miss running, and getting free games from Eagle. Ah, 2005 and 2006...good times.

That's the thing about Robo Rally you're not supposed to think so far in advance. You're supposed to smash into things, fall into pits and explode other robots. Having a time limit makes the game great the faster the better.
My choice for games I really dislike - Settlers of Cataan. I used to love this game, but now it makes me physically ill the thought of actaully playing it.
I dislike scrabble as well but would play it.

I'm curious... why the change? Is because it got 'overplayed' or too many people jumped on the Settler's wagon?
I enjoy the game though I usually play most board games about a couple times a year it seems. I suppose that if 'forced' to play a game time and time again, I'd get sick of it too.

I don't know, maybe I am playing Robo Rally wrong. I just can't get into it and I've played the game at least a half dozen times. Settlers is pretty cool in my book, but commanderFuron you've got to play the Cities & Knights battle version I came up with. Yeah, there is still all the resource trading but this time the knights (or armies as I see it) actually sack cities and can ruin production in a hex. I guess you mgiht be able to tell, I like games that involve military strategy and battlin'. 4TW!

I think my issues with Settlers is that many folks talk about as the best thing since sliced bread and I just wasn't overly impressed. It didn't invoke a table-flipping rage, but I wasn't really "wowed" by it. Then again, I'm more of a Classic Dungeon kind of guy...

Easily. But, if you want a better answer: it was portrayed as a more involved spades, which it is not. I would rather play Trump.

Rifts or any Palladium game.
Rolemaster... ugh chart.. chart... chart... enough already.
GURPS... more because I had it out with Steve Jackson AND Andrew Hackard. I used to be a big GURPS fan but that shit just pissed me off and now I'd like nothing more than to see Steve Jackson Games crash and burn.

In regards to the Hero System, they are supposed to have some kind of rulebook that strips the rules down to the bare minimum needed for character creation. I think they finally got the point once someone posted that "Bulletproof" video on Youtube.
I'm pretty sure it was the guys from Hero Games that made that.

I really liked Nobilis YKMV... I loved it more when I sold my copy on eBay for $460.00 and no I didn't misplace the period.

I think it's that the actaul game is really not that much fun. It was fun when I first played it because it was so different, but the more I played it the more I was bored. You roll some dice, get nothing, the active player takes a million years deciding what to do, rinse repeat.
Now, the variations I like, Spacefarers is a great game, especially the ships and random resource pile, and I really like the dice Cataan (or as I like to call it yahtzee Cataan)
Omote - maybe knights sacking resources would be cool but why not play a proper war game instead , I see your knight and raise you a fusion powered battle suit spitting lazer death

The repetativeness of the dice rolling mechanic can (and was) replaced in an expansion of Settlers of Cataan, the name of which escapes me. The expansion provided a deck of cards each player draws from instead of rolling the dice to generate resources. The cards have a die roll on them which determines what resources you collect. The distribution of the cards numbers closely resembles the break down of how rare resources can be (6s,7,s,8s, versus 12s), but in the deck all of the numbers are represented. No longer will there be certain numbers never rolled, or rolled too often. The deck gets never gets recycled until all the cards are drawn. That means that whatever number your settlements fall on, your number will defintely, eventually come up. This takes the randomness out of the Cataan game which some people like. An additonal neat feature of these cards is that on each one there is also an event that affects game play in various ways. These aspects speed up game play greatly, and avoid the screw of never having cetain numbers rolled or not rolled. A great expansion.

Hmm... The cards for Settlers sound like an interesting variant.
I find Settlers is a good game but it's more along the lines of monopoly than some of the other fine board / strategy games that exist. It's a simple game based on a random mechanic. Sure, you get to plan and plot accordingly and, depending how you play your Settlers and who you play it with will either increase or decrease the 'fun' value.
Very enlightening and thanks for your thoughts to those who responded.

I've only played Settlers twice, and neither game got finished. I wouldn't mind playing one to the finish sometime, but you all are making some interesting points.
