If only the freebies were tempting, but they are not for me. Still cool to see the number of stores that still exist, though.

The box of miniatures appeals to me, but I'm not sure I'll make it to a store. Unfortunately, the Pittsburgh area game stores are across town from me.

Hmm... and there are two in my area. I'm half tempted to make a couple of side trips. To facilitate my acquisition of plastic crack.

(A box of mini's is just over $15 which entitles me to a gift which includes a box of mini's)

If only WotC had something I'd want to spend $15 on. Well, they have Star Wars Saga, but I'm caught up.

How is Saga? I'm considering making the jump (uh...to light speed? ) to Saga as it seems difficult to convince anyone to play the old WEG version, and the Force powers are supposed to run nice-n'-smooth. I have the core book on my Amazon wish list and my wife will more than likely pick it up for me for Father's Day, but I'm curious as to how the damn thing actually plays.

It could have the best mechanics ever but it'd still just be lame ol' Star Wars.

If by lame you mean a special kind of awesome, then I agree.

My thoughts on the direction that Saga took are overly positive compared to the initial d20 version but I still prefer the d6 system overall. It's like comparing C&C to a (hypothetical) well-run and refined 3.5

Without a doubt though, the force powers in Saga are much better set up and defined when compared to the d6 system. But I think the d6 system is well suited to a 'pulpy' and quick style of play -- not unlike Savage Worlds I guess. I never had problems running my Star Wars d6 adventures since I tend to place the campaign in the time between 'A New Hope' and 'Empire Strikes Back' which effectively meant no Jedi's.

I was half-tempted to pick up the Saga books a couple of times -- especially when it was new but haven't yet and I'm beginning to doubt that I will. I hardly play the WEG system as it is and I'm more likely to adapt the material to 'Siege' before I'd pick up yet another gaming system.

As for setting... well, I like it and it can be fun. I know a lot people who don't want to because it's so 'established' for one reason or another. Personally, I prefer 'classic' Star Wars if that makes any sense and though certain things that have come out since the original Trilogy are fun, I try not to think about them too much for purposes of my game.

Well, it's pretty good, to be honest. Many people thought this was the actual blueprint for 4e...and to be perfectly honest, if it had been I might have made the switch. There are a lot of similarities, though.

They went with talent trees (like d20 Modern) and at alternate levels you get feats/talents. The lost the fringer class (from d20 version) but I think there is a talent tree out there that replicates some of their old abilities. Jedis no longer have to use Vitality to use powers, and the whole system went away from the VP/WP system to HP. ACs and Saves replicate the 4e way, pretty much. Skills are similar to 4e, also.

I made some comparisons to 4e and the d20 version, but if you're unfamiliar with those let me just say this - it plays well, kind of fast. And that's good for a SW game, IMHO. It captures the feel pretty well. It's overall a solid system, and I think you'd be pleased with it, Orpheus.

The Dwarf needs to watch "Fanboys." Not the best movie in the universe, but it's fun watching Star Wars fans beat up Trekkies. And the movie has a topless Kristen Bell!!! (granted, from behind, but still!)

Anyone care to detail the WoTC giveaway? I'm at work and the Wizards site is classified by Websense as "games."

The reason many people think saga was the blue print for 4e is because it was. There are just way to many similarities to think otherwise.

So I picked up a Revenge of the Sith booster pack and got the Clone Wars Starter. Yeah, I plan on picking up the the Saga Edition stuff soon and these will come in handy.

On another note, the 4th Edition game in which I played was fantastic! If you get the right group of people and the right DM then the game really shines. These guys were laid-back, very helpful (three of us were only on our second session using the rules; no pressure) and there to have a good time. Of all the tables at the meetup, we were definitely the loudest and most jovial.
I'm not going to be hopping into 4th Edition tomorrow as I've just started graduate school so most of my gaming will have to be between semesters, but I'll probably make sure that I get some of the material for my birthday and Christmas (I thought that you were supposed to be able to buy whatever you wanted to when you grow up, but apparently that's not the case when you get married and go back to school while having a child at home ).

I defnitely think that the system is one that needs the right group, much like any game (including C&C). If I can find a good group of not-too-serious gamers to play this with, I think that I could have great time.

I do think that the idea that novice gamers can get into 4th Edition easily is a little off, but I could be wrong. Personally, I feel that C&C would be a MUCH BETTER introduction for new players and certainly more fun for a good group who doesn't want the granular tactical play that 4th Edition has. It's a good game, but much like Lord Dynel has mentioned in regard to 3.5: playing with the core books is great, but the introduction of (currently hypothethical, but you know that they deluge is starting) add-on material will make this thing unwieldy.

I had fun though.

The sad, sad truth, my man.
Glad to hear you had a good time! I agree - with the right group, many games can be fun.

You are dead on right. 4e has a pretty steep learning curve compared to other editions of D&D. Its like when tree says he spent most of the game trying to figure out which power to use. That is 4e in a nutshell and once the players know what they are doing the game takes on a whole new light.

Tack that on as yet another reason why I like C&C a lot - very easy to integrate new players to the game.

The offer's cool, but no, thanks. It's too late for me.

I'm not giving another dime to WotC. Ever again.
