HArn fans?

What would you say are the best products to have?

I already have Harn Manor and several of the city books. I will likely buy the core "Harnworld" set, and probably the book on magic, but what else is really good?

Anyone have Harn stuff they would like to sell?

Check out Lythia.com for a ton of free, very high quality downloads.

Harnworld is a must. Pick a kingdom module that interests you and get it. Kaldor is heavily supported, and the most similar to other western fantasy kingdoms, so it's often a good starting point.

I was looking at their Fathers Day sale:
http://www.columbiagames.com/cgi-bin/qu ... e-harn.txt

I am also well aware of Lythia.com, been shamelessly DLing practically everything from there for years. Excellent free stuff to be sure.

Thanks for the pointer to the sale.

I'm very fond of their cities/settlements supplements: Cities of Harn, Castles of Harn, Son of Cities, etc. All good stuff, and well-worth stealing for use in your own campaigns.

I never found the system too appealing, FWIW.

I am not excited by their system either Alan, like you, I just think the fluff is awesome!

I decided to go with their normal "bundle" deal and got:

HarnMaster, City of Tashal, HarnMaster Religion for $79.09, which included shipping. If your interested in their electronic character generators and DM aids, the bundle deal is even better. Normally it would have been about $96+ shipping before bundling, and City of Tashal didn't appear to be part of the Fathers Day Sale anyways.

I went for HarnMaster because I want to see the rules in full, and make up my own conversion rules.

Of course, the fluff of Harn is one of the best parts about the game. personally, I think the maps are even a better part of Harn.

I agree with Omote about the maps.

I have a good bit of Harn stuff. Not all...nowhere near all, actually, but I got a ton of it a few months back for 25% of cover price at my FLGS in a moving sale (I even think I got some for someone here but I can't remember who). I stacked up on a bunch of stuff - about 7 or 8 kingdom modules, the magic rules, and a regional module. I already had the box set, the folio of Harn world, and a few Encyclopedia Harnicas.

I love the setting. The sad thing is, I love it for the exact reasons my players would probably hate it. It's low magic. It's humanocentric. It's gritty (kind of goes along with low magic). I love the Middle Ages feel of the setting (my Middle Ages love was the gateway to fantasy and fantasy RPGs, actually). My players love the fantasy RPG for just that, and the closest I've been able to get them to that is Greyhawk (and they complain about that, sometimes).

But I read a lot of Harn in my spare time.

Guess I should add more stuff. LOVE the setting. My personal favorite area is Rethem, but it is soon to be republished, and is a much darker kingdom than normal. The cover shows Agrikan (evil war god) soldiers hanging some poor peasant for some reason or another, which should tell you what this area is like.

If you like vikings, get Ivinia and Menglana on eBay. If you like medieval France, buy Shorkyne.

The HM rules are a leftover of the 80's, and not in a good way.

like many have said, the best parts of Harn (IMO) are the fluff/setting and maps. I'd give the magic supplement a miss, Treebore. I got it years ago and was pretty disappointed. Not so with their cities and manors, however!

I second this. I don't have the new one (the one from the sale), but I have the Shek-Pvar accessory and it's okay, at best, in my opinion. The first eight pages or so has some decent fluff, but the rest of the book is laden with the clunky HM rules.

I've always been interested in Hrn but never got around to buy any product. What should I start with, if I finally give it a go?

Well, for tons of great and free PDF stuff, check out lythia.com. As for what I do own, my favorite is probably Harn Manor.

My favorite is the Harn boxed set. I can look through that joker and find interesting stuff on practically any page I flip to.

You talking the Harn World boxed set? If so that is one of the things I just bought, and probably hasn't even made it into the mail yet.

Indeed, that's what I refer to. I had this plastic folio-like thing about 10 years ago or so, but it went away a while ago. I recently picked the boxed set, and it has teh same stuff in it the folio does. This is some fantastic stuff - you will not be disappointed.

Good to hear! I better work my way through my two stacks of books I have yet to read so I can get to it.

Yeah, that's a good idea, Tree. I find myself having a hard time putting it down, to be honest. The stuff reads so dang good. It's so tight and well thought out, you could almost be reading the history of an actual time and place. It's good stuff.

I'd start with the HarnWorld Box Set (2nd edition) to get a feel Harn. From there, you can go out and try to acquire some of the other places you find interest in. Unfortunatley, some of the better Harn supplements are damn hard to find, and if you do, prepare to drop some coin on them.

*nod* I'm going to grab a Harn World boxed set one of these days.

What is Harn Manor, by the way? Why is it exceptional?

The best way for you to find out is to go to lythia.com and DL one of those manors, then realize Harn Manor has several of them done up (6, I think), and rules/guidelines for generating a lot more, with work sheets.

Yay...the forums are back.

I've never owned Harn Manor, but I've glanced at a friend's copy. It is dang sweet. It'll probably be the next thing I'll pick up, personally. But if you're just getting into Harn, I'll reiterate (since the forums have been down ) that the box set is the best choice for someone new to the setting...like no one knew that already. Man, all this talk about Harn and I'm going to have to whip out my box set now.
