Ok, so there was a flurry of activity over at Brave Halfling Publishing, and in light of the recent discussion on this thread, I figured I'd post it here rather than start a new thread.

It appears from the posts that John Adams has made, that BHP will no longer be producing the Swords & Wizardry: White Box edition due contractual agreements and IP issues. Instead, BHP will now produce "Delving Deeper" which appears to have the same cover and same ruleset with modifications from SW.

Here is the cover and blurb from BHP:

Image
Delving Deeper RPG closely emulates the rules of the earliest version of the world’s most popular roleplaying game. Go back to a time when every weapon did d6 damage, clerics could cast no spell at first level, only fighters could use magic swords, and if you wanted a locked door opened you had to bash the thing in! It is difficult to imagine in a world where multiple, weighty tomes comprise the rules; but the these three small books contain all you need to build a campaign that can span decades of real time! If you’re tired of trying to find the rule for determining whether your fighter is left-handed and is able to swim and just want to kill some goblins, have we got a game for you!

But wait, there’s more! While Delving Deeper is a solid, rule set that closely emulates the rules of the earliest version of Original Edition, it also has a toolbox aspect to it as well. Running throughout the game are two separate tracks of options – little tweaks to the rules that help DD also emulate the rules of the First Basic Edition (“Track #1”) and the rules of the Third Print Edition of a modern rpg inspired by Original Edition that I used to publish (“Track #2”).

Delving Deeper RPG will be released directly from Brave Halfling Publishing as a digest boxed set of booklets, dice, character sheets, etc. the first week of April and in your local game store in May. We will be supporting Delving Deeper RPG with modules, supplements and campaigns. A free trademark license will also be available for third party publishers.

But there’s no need to sit around and wait. Come on back next Monday afternoon for our weekly Development Blog. But do more than that, help us put this thing
I was suprised about all the conflict and challenges that happened, and I'm curious about how DD will differ as a Retro Clone from SW:WB. Maybe John can chime in and give us some details. Anyway, looks rather interesting to say the least and as Delving Deeper is also the title of some BHPs LL expansion, I wonder if they will be adapated or just use outright with DD - class options like the paladin, ranger, bard, monk, or the gnome class.

Thoughts?

Yeah, I'm very curious as to how the new game differs from the old as well. Is there still going to be the ascending/descending AC system? Are the XP charts going to be changed to look a little more like the source material (OD&D)? Is the price point going to change now that Matt Finch doesn't get a cut of the profits? Are there going to be other changes that Coleston is willing to discuss with us? I would love to see any departure from the S&W IP become a game that is a bit more in line with the game it is endeavoring to clone. I know there are legal ramifications within the framework of the OGL that must be observed, but I always felt that S&W didn't QUITE catch the OD&D feel even though it was closer than anything else outside of OD&D.

What a week! The exciting world of rpg publishing.

After Matt and Marv's online blow-up, I was just too uncomfortable publishing WB.

Delving Deeper will not be WB. It will emulate the earliest version of OD&D (3 LBBs). It will have some optional tracks to let gamers play Delving Deeper more like Holmes Basic or like WB.

"Delving Deeper" was chosen because we thought it fit pretty good and because it has been product identity for BHP for over three years now.

The Delving Deeper Digest Boxed Set will still retail for $29.95. Pre-orders are already piling up.

I will be sharing more as we go.

I know Omote likes it. I have it on order, and I believe I can DL the PDF, but I am waiting for the printed book, so eventually I'll be able to tell you what I think about it.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

It is quite good, and as complete as any 0E game could be. I couldn't wait any longer for the printed book to arrive, so I printed up myself a deadtree version. When the hardcover, full-on FGG version finally arrives, I know I'll be happy.

If you are familiar with FGG's and Necromancer Games products, you'll instantly feel their presence in S&WC. This book is not laid out like any RPG book from the 70s. Nyet. While the contents are pretty old-school, the art and overall presentation are pretty modern looking. This is a good thing. The book is well organized, and complete with monster, treasures and all the player information.

I know FGG likes to present S&WC as completely 0-Edition, but it is not. Updates have been done to the rules to make them more coherent, plus there are lots of alternate and optional rules presented to "fill in the gaps" if you will. All of that being said, S&WC is not bare bones at all, but is extremely lean compared to any of the other retro clones (not as lean as S&W White Box and original S&W, obviously).

Definitely worth the cost of admission.

Omote Rating: 9.5 / 11.0

~O

PS: I'm not even really that big of a fan of S&W. But Frog God Games came in and made the S&W experience a whole lot better IMO.

Sounds good, O.
I've just recently explored the WB version and love it, FWIW.

I've been meaning to ask, what the hell is that avatar? A Will Ferrell spoof of Ted Nugent? (which is not to say I don't love it...) :D

Ha! That my friend is Bronco riding atop his Battle Stag. See the flick Gentleman Broncos for more information, because it's pretty hard to explain without having seen the movie. ;)

But, but I WANT A BATTLE STAG!

Anyway, thanks for the review. I want to get my hands on it and I have e-mailed the company like a week ago and I have not heard back, so I think I am going to e-mail them again.

You know, I love C&C because of the old school feel, it is why DnD 2nd edition has a special place in my heart.

I think those pictures say it better than any stat block ever could!

That is certainly one bad... ASS... Stag!

That is AWESOME! I want a Battle Stag! And now I have to see if I can go and rent the movie too, you sir, have sparked my interest.

On a darker note, does anyone know how to get a hold of Frog God Games? They do not seem to answer the e-mails

Anyway, I think I am going to a stab at a stat block. My pally needs a Battle Stag anyway.

Battle Stag
Number Encountered: 1 (Sometimes 1 + 1 Rider)
Size: Large
HD: 12 (d10)
Move: 50ft, 60ft (Fly)
AC: 18
Attacks: Horns 1d8+4, 2 Hooves 1d6+3
Saves: (P + M)
INT: Low
Special: Awesome Presence, Missile Launchers, Ass Cannon
Alignment: Neutral
Type: Magical Beast
Treasure: Special

Awesome Presence: This functions as the Dragon's Frightful Presence but lasts 10 rounds.

Missile Launchers: This functions as a Magic Missile Spell like ability cast as a 10th level caster, the Battle Stag can use this ability at will.

Ass Canon: The deadly attack is summoned out of the Stags ass. It functions as a Flame Strike Spell like ability that is cast as a 10th level caster and can be used 3 times per day.

Treasure: Once a Battle Stag is slain, their horns can be crafted as swords, daggers, or bows and they all count as having a +2 Enhancement.

Haha! Shenron, that rocks!

Here is your contact info for FGG:
bill@talesofthefroggod.com

If that e-mail doesn't work, perhaps you want to post on the Necromancer Games general MB, here:
http://necromancergames.yuku.com/forums ... Discussion

Interestingly, it seems the Bill of FGG has not been around very much at all over the past 7-10 days. Not sure what the hold up could be.

Good luck!
