HERO 6th Edition...
HERO 6th Edition...
Its in my LGS now. Actually shocked that they actually got a copy in.
Anyways, the books are FRIKKIN BIG!!
So what is it about this system that makes all those pages worth plowing through to learn this game?

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Nothing at all.
Hard to imagine. I gave this game up in it's 2nd edition. I have absolutely no idea what could take up that kind of space.

The game does allow you to create any superhero you can imagine, pretty much. I think it could be done much simpler, but hey, I'm retarded.
Now you tell me.

I got the original 5th edition doorstop, but never got the revision. I believed it to be double dipping on DOJ's part. The one good thing to really come from 5th edition was Sidekick. That book showed me there was too much stuff in the game.
The best edition of the game was 4th IMO. The big blue book did it right.

My experience with the HERO System has been mostly conversations via forums that I've lurked in where the detractors discuss the various uses of the books themselves in any other capacity than actually for roleplaying - Plates for the Latest Body Armor, an improvised melee weapon, etc. Not to mention the lambasting of the whole epic length of the books. On the flipside i've also been exposed to the evangelists of the system, prostelytizing with a joy unheard of, expressing the intense and extreme flexiblity, accurately pointing out their one or two big books are simply the same as the PHB, DMG and MM put together - or perhaps the size of Pathfinder or Spycraft 2.0. I just steered away from it and enjoyed other games.
Recently, I too did see the new 6th Edition books in my FLGS and was slightly intrigued. The fact that they managed to get the IP involved in an MMO has been rather interesting as well. I'm quite happy with Mutants & Masterminds as my Supers game of choice. Eventually I do hope to explore BASH and Palladium's Heroes Unlimited as well. HERO still has that aura of massiveness though, that is until I came across their Hero System Basic Rulebook. Link for it is below.

At about $20 and much smaller in size this seems a bit more palatable. Anyone check this out or get it yet? Thoughts?

That's 6th Edition's version of Sidekick. In general, the Sidekick-style books have fewer options. For example, a power that takes up a half page in the full rules might get pared down to a paragraph or two, and trickier stuff has been removed. The intent is to make the game accessible to new players, because let's face it. Owning one doorstop (5th edition) was bad enough. 6th Edition got broken down into two hardcovers, each about the same size as the original 5th edition book.
I recommend the basic rulebooks, since about 90% of what you can do in the big books can be done in the smaller book. You just don't get all the esoteric options that you find in the big rulebook.

The first edition of Champions was originally 64 pages, and then subsequently expanded to 80. You have a later edition.

I kept my big blue book (4th edition), although the binding died ages ago and it's now in a binder. If I want 6th edition Basic, I'll find it somewhere used, because I simply don't need it.
In fact, I may even give up my full copy of 5th simply because I have 4th and Sidekick, and don't really need much else.
