I am now excited about Legend of the 5 Rings 4E

Post by Treebore »

At first I wasn't, largely because I assumed the edition change would be similar in nature to the changes between 1E to 2E to 3E.

However, now that I noticed they had finished the designer diaries, I finally read them. I have to say that if they deliver what they promise in these diaries I will be happy to move to 4E. Not only because I like what they appear to be doing, but also because what they appear to be doing will allow me to continue with the ideas I have yet to explore in 3E.

I also love that they have discovered that "Simpler is better." whenever possible, and strive for that throughout their rewrite.

I also like that they have done such extensive play testing, far more than for any previous edition, and I think that will pay off, HUGELY.

If they also do a much better job of organizing and laying out the material, this will be a home run edition with me.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

But, but, you have everything you ever wanted.
Seriously, it is good to be psyched about a game. I've not played much of this one, but I'm not really into playing historical RPGs either. Unless there are mutants.

Its not historical, it essentially takes all the cool ideas of Japan, China, Korea, and some other cool Asian Myths, ideas, and concepts, and puts them together in a quasi feudal Japan like nation with Samurai and the code of Bushido and see where things take you.

The only quasi historical RPG I have found and liked is Qin, the Warring States, based on the Kingdoms period of China, but the mystical magics are real, etc... Oh, and Aces and Eights would probably qualify as quasi historical, even though they did come up with their own alternative history, but its still Wild West USA.

Sounds like 4e is going to be an improvement, overall. So that's definitely a good thing, Tree.

Yep, and a big improvement too, not a big change.

L5R confuses the hell out of me. Too many editions, too many books, convoluted plot line. MEH.

Then getting in on the ground floor with 4E will fix all of that, even the "plot line" is optional this time around.
