Lucas always did pick up things from the best sources. And as Jack Kirby used to say in 1970, "May the Source be with you!"TheMetal1 wrote:Was that Chaosium's Runequest or your hands were fat fingering the keyboard when you were trying to type Luke Skywalker, Sand People and the Jedi Council.MormonYoYoMan wrote:But we did have a Humakt warrior who slaughtered a camp of broos, including their children -- and even when talking about chaotic monsters, they were still children, and some Lhankor Mhy folk wanted him put on trial.

Thanks. I'm actually leaning toward something a bit more realistic (as opposed to Savage Worlds), so that may be a plus.MormonYoYoMan wrote: It's deadly enough to convince a player, after the first combat or two, to try to solve the problem in another way if that's possible. Just like real life.
I'm getting the impression that part of it is that PCs don't gain hp in the same way that they do in C&C (for example), as part of some leveling system. In that respect, it's kind of like being low level throughout the PC's career, so it's is deadly in a way comparable to C&C at low levels. Is that about right?

Re: Sell me on Basic Roleplaying.
As I recall, one could increase their hit points the same way that one does in real life, and which is symbolized by hit points in class/level games. In, for instance, D&D-type games, hit points represent health AND armor AND one's skill in Not Getting Hurt. In Runequest, one had a Constitution of 15 and one continued to have a Constitution of 15 until old age, damage, or illness lowered it. But one's skills in Dodging, Parrying, etc - plus how well one took care of one's self (proper nutrition, exercise, etc) would mean that one could, figuratively (and sometimes literally, if you were playing Superworld) dodge a bullet. Adding armor meant that a blow from a big bad broadsword had to hit cleanly, and the armor would stop a certain amount of that damage. Adding a good shield and proficiency with it (all of which was accomplished by "formal" training and "on the job" training) made a Runelord pretty darned difficult to kill. Unless a lucky shot got in, which happened to one of the Chaosium players and their character of Rurik, a Runelord.kreider204 wrote:Thanks. That's cool, Kreider. I assumed you'd still be around. Hope it works out with BRP.

Congrats! Hope you love the system as much as I do!kreider204 wrote:Update: Shiny new hardback BRP book in hands as we speak ...
There where a number of other worlds before becoming known as the guys who do Cthulhu. Rpggeek has a list of them here. Its been awhile but most of the early licenses where boxed sets. I can guarantee you that; Elfquest is in a boxed set, the others I just don't remember. If any one of those peak your interest it should be pretty easy conversion from 1st+ edition BRP to the current 5th edition. I have no idea what the after market prices would be, nor where to get them, but worth the price of admission if you can acquire them.
As a side note, George R.R. Martin played; Superworld with some of his writer friends. This inspired George to assemble the shared universe; Wild Cards. (My favourite shared universe book series.) Plenty of characters, that appear in the books, are either straight ports of favourite rpg characters or a somewhat altered version, plus entirely new characters. It wasn't a flash-in-the-pan either. Mr. Martin and crew played for years. I thought that was pretty cool and why Mr. Martin was eager to see; A Story of Ice and Fire in rpg form. Even though it took a couple of shots to do so.
