Ne'er-do-Wells – BASH

Post by Lurker »

17 Aug 2020

Jeremy Mathias closed the door to his locker with an echoing metallic clang. The musty smell of the old basement shower behind him some how made him feel at home. How many mornings had started like this ? After PT and a shower, time to head to the briefing room (or class room or … so many options for the rest of the day)

A flutter of nervousness, just a moment. A new place, a new team, no ties to his brothers and sisters in the Hunter's Wards project.

A smirk at his own nervousness. School work equal to 2 degrees, work with military in training, martial arts and combative masters teaching beyond a simple belt, FBI instruction in investigation, CIA training in … oh so much work with that agency, and then time working with “reformed” street thugs here in the US and abroad . All crammed in his 20 years. However, it was all with his brothers and sisters in Hunter's Wards. That is the difference.

Brothers and sisters that were bred like him (to be the best epitome of the best of humanity) and spent most of their life training learning working together, vs a new team of … . He wasn't even sure what the team would be made of. Only that of all those from the Hunter's Wards program, he had been ordered here to this new program. OSI (Office of Scientific Investigation) . An agency dealing with exceptional individuals and super threats.

Glancing at his locker, the nervousness evaporated and his half smile returned

Deacon

Yeah who ever assigned his code name had read his transcript, training performance and history and dug into his psychological profile. Equivalent degrees in Philosophy and theology, highly internalization of morality and ethical lessons, and psych note highlighting the statement he heard a musician say “2nd fiddle is the hardest seat to fill but it is the most important to have the right person in. Any exceptional person can shine in the spot light, but it is hard to have an exceptional talent focus on making the star sound even better.” Deacon is fitting.

A glance at the other lockers, empty, 2 other name tapes on them:

Faron – Odd – a name meaning 'Handsome servant' , or a singer from Louisiana famously known as The Singing Sheriff. Or just a random name with no meaning.

Golem – not a lot of guessing there. A brute of some type

There were a few other lockers in the basement shower room and locker room.

A yawn was barely held back. Yes there has been a lot of traveling, but for the last few months, there was a little time with his parents and closest friends from HW in his home in the mountains of N California, Time enough to get used to West Coast time.

However, soon enough the expected orders arrived – Report to OSI – unwritten observe and report back to HW on any exceptional worked with and faced, any lessons learned that others in HW can use when they are facing exceptionals themselves. But in the swamp of alphabet soup every agency and program observes and reports on every other, so no surprise there.

Dressed, and without a thought sliding the 9mm pistol into the holster in the small of his back, and a 2nd snub nosed 38 into his ankle holster, the 20 year old head upstairs to grab a bite of chow, but will avoid the coffee, time spent in Italy means he will never willingly drink chow hall coffee, and then be the first ready for the morning's briefing

Steve Stevenson leaned back in his chair and took a drag of his Marlboro cigarette. He glanced over at the picture of his wife, now gone 30 years now. There were other women but they never lasted, they couldn't compare with her and eventually he just game up trying. He instead committed himself to his career. It was concerning that that he picked up a file and studied it.

Deacon, he mused, some super-spy trained in a variety of skills, he was certain that those skills would be put the test.

Golem, super-strong metamorph. Native American working for the government, well he remembered the wind-talkers in the Japanese theater. Seems he was inspired by his spirit guide, well it takes all kinds.

Faron, some sort of monster hunter, was recruited after saving a rookie agent that was almost murdered in a ritual slaying. Unlike many of his fellow agents Steve had seen many things unexplained by human science. He wasn't as much a skeptic as the others, he believed, just wish he didn't have to.

His mind wandered to Bjorn, the Norwegian hunter with the power to change into a huge white bear. Major Glory, hard fighting, hard drinking, hard partying full on Marine. Finally Jade, once again the familiar ache came upon him, the loss. She was a chosen one of the Gypsies, dedicated to fighting for the USA and still protect all people, including the Romany from the evil of the Nazis.

But today new threats have to be dealt with, dangers that don't make the 6 o'clock news, threats that most people can' handle. That is when his people come in, to make the nation and the world safe. Sometime even when the price is too high.

Crushing out his cigarette Director Stevenson he heard a buzzer on his intercom, "Sir, the team is assembled, Miss Taylor said in her dulcet tones, may I send them in?"

"Go ahead".

14 Sep 2020 recap

The pistol jerked in Deacon’s hand as the young master spy yelled back over his shoulder to the rest of the team, the town’s sheriff, and the adhoc deputies the sheriff had just called into action
“Well, I guess we know what happened to the soldiers on the base now. We can mark that off the list”

The quick shot was to give a cover fire for the young curly haired teenage girl screaming and running from the shambling soldier/zombie bearing down on the panicked girl.

The young spy thought “First mole men and an attack in a dank tunnel buy a filthy mole-woman hybrid, and now zombie soldiers. Yes this is a very odd town and this has been a very strange day …”

Deacon relaxed and sighted once more on the zombie and readied for the coming fight.

***
The new team received their briefing in Langley from Director Stevenson. A retired agent Sam Moss had called and left a panicked message, troubling, but not that significant on its own. However news also came in that the military base near where the agent had retired had also recently gone silent. Now those 2 facts put together did raise flags and needed to be investigated.

Since the team was new, this would be a good first mission for them to learn how to work together in the field and hopefully not be in too much danger. Unfortunately, one of the team members had missed the briefing [possibly due to food poisoning from an old left over sandwich] and hopefully would be able to catch up with the team In the next day or 2.

The flight to far W Kentucky was uneventful (Deacon used it to extensively study the maps of the town the nearby military base and the surrounding area).

Deacon drove from the Airport to the remote town of Smith town, and Faron used the time to similar study the maps etc. When they were an hour out, Deacon called Sam Moss' house phone only clicked and did not ring. It looked like the retired agent's phone service was down. He then called the local police and made up a believable cover story to see if the phone outage was wide spread, or if it was just an accident at the agent’s house. The police explained that there hadn’t been any reports of a phone line being down or that Ma Bell was having troubles, so it must have been an issue at the house.

A vehicle recon ‘flyby’ of the agents home showed there were no observation teams keeping a watch on the agents house. Also, the house looked in order, or it did until the group drove down the back road behind the house … even from the road, the team could tell the door was ajar.

Deacon parked the car a few 100 feet down the dirt road, and the group carefully made their way through the surrounding trees back to the house. On the way there Deacon noticed odd tracks, 4 different sets, 2 of them appearing normal human, but then others that looked like what ever it was walked using both its feet and hands for locomotion and it also was clawed . Deacon glanced at Faron who as a monster hunter may be able to identify the tracks better than the spy, but after a few minutes, he said that it was to little to be sure on it could easily be one of 6 or 7 different creatures.

Carefully the team entered the house to find it had been tossed. And not only tossed but it appeared there had been a fight, claw marks on the wall and doors, gun shots into the walls, even a little blood on the floor.

As the group readied to go down into the basement, Deacon took a step, hesitated, and then threw himself to the side as a shotgun blast went off from the darkness below. A VERY well hidden shotgun trap had been set up down there.

After disarming the trap, the group explored the rootcellar . Dirt floor and wall, shelves of vegetables, in the corner a CB radio with a journal next to it, and then hidden a military foot locker with survival food, military clothing, a well cared for Colt 45, and a sturdy M-1. Deccan smiled at this. Both better than his government issue 9mm .

As he did not have a mystical sword and crossbow like Faron Nor did he have mutant kinetic blasts like "Blaster", so the addition of a good 45 & .308 made him feel a little safer.

In the back of the cellar, the group found a recently hand dug and claw scraped tunnel going into the hill side.

Deccan switched on his flashlight, but Faron stepped ahead of the young spy.

As the group carefully crept down the tunnel, suddenly the dirt wall exploded and out leapt a filthily mole women hybrid, claws out and crooked broken teeth beard.

The mole thing leapt at Deacon and a swiped of the claws tore his shirt but did not draw blood,

The spy pulled the trigger on the 9mm but the beast was quick, quicker than any normal human.

The fight lasted a time, and the beast continued to focus on the young spy, but eventually, with the 3 in the group fighting together against it, the mole-woman fell knocked out cold.

After tying her hands and feet, Deccan woke her and began questioning her.

It was difficult due to her limited intelligence , but the group did find out, her and her kind were cannibals and eat people, they had been sent by someone to capture Sam Moss, and they had drug him off to their underground home, their leader was called “The Worm-King” and they had been going to the base to get weapons.

After they got all the answers possible from the wretched beast, Deacon nodded and Faron plunged his sword down killing her instantly – “I would have considered letting her go, but when she said she ate people, there was no way I would let her out of here alive” Deacon said as he sadly looked down on the twitching dead thing at his feet.

The group not wanting to go on and face a horde of these mole creatures headed back to the house, into town to get hotel rooms (and clean up) and then to call back to Langley

After giving their report Deacon was told to stay there, find out more about what is going on in the town and see about the base.

The best place to get general information is the watering hole, so the group headed to the local bear joint and honkie tonk.

Deacon, as a spy was in his element, he soon had the bar tender talking about how nervous everyone felt here how jumpy people were getting and the rumors about hunched things moving at night through the woods and around the edge of town. (it all fit the mole creatures description.

Now to the local police (turned out to be a sheriff).

Deccan started with a general cover story, but as the discussion went on, he decided to admit to being a federal agent and talked more openly to the sheriff about what they had faced at …’s house and that in a da maybe 2 there would be help coming from the FBI etc. However, until then they needed to be ready for whatever the mole men were planning, and they needed to find out what was going on at the base.

The Deputy and his few normal deputies made some calls and got some dependable men in (all armed).

As the group readied to go and start patrolling the town, they heard the terrified scream of the teenage girl out on the lawn.
Deacon, 9mm in hand & 45 tucked into the small of his back, and the rest sprinted to the door,

21 Sep recap

Deacon rolled up the map of the area surrounding the military base and handed it back to the local sheriff.
“It looks like that road will be the way to the old mine entrance. Is there anything along the way we need to know about? Are there any bridges that are weekend (and can be collapsed as we drive across them), anyplace prone to rock slides ?”

The Sheriff shook his head no, as the group jumped into a borrowed 4wd jeep .
Deacon glanced over at the 3 being loaded into the FBI’s quick reaction vehicle and a frown twitched at the corner of his mouth. It was soon followed by a smirk “We are going to need a bigger boat” … Yes he is going to need a bigger boat working here with the OSI

Knowing the existence of ‘unique individuals’ was one thing. Seeing a mutant extra human Minatar that was unaffected by point blank rife shots is another. Yes to survive around here on this team Deacan will need a bigger boat, with bigger weapons, and a better shark cage. However, his training had done him well. With good tactics the group had brought down 3 exceptionally powerful villains. But, it was a very close run thing to do so.

The gravel sprayed as Deacon and the rest of the team took off from the base bouncing along the old dirt road to go save the missing agent that the mole-men had captured.

***
After fighting off the zombies, not nearly as many as Deacon had first thought there would be, the next morning the group headed to the base and Deacon used one of his cover stories to try and get on the base. The guard stopped him, but slipped him a note asking for help. Deacon switched to investigator mode and got info from the guard on ‘good running trails around the base’ meaning good ways to sneak onto the base.

It was easy enough then for him to lead the group onto the base and avoid being seen.

When on base, they noticed to soldiers there were disheveled and things didn’t look right. Then from out of a building, 3 things walked out.

A superhuman sized Minitor with a massive battel axe. He picked up a solder here and there tossing them like rag dolls.

A man normalish looking except for the long sword like weapons from the bracers on his wrist.

An attractive blond lady that … Deacon wasn’t sure what threat she would be, so that worried him the most.

The group spread out for an ambush and the 1 st & 2 nd rounds focused all the attacks on the Miniator, … to no effect except for Golem’s punches. … Deacon glanced down at his rifle frowned … took a breath, sprinted to cover of a nearby building and did a quick shot on the blond, … the satisfying thump of lead hitting a target and doing damage gave him hope.

The sword man blinked out of existence, and then appeared behind Golem. Fortunately Faron was there and was able to keep the blade wielder from hitting the team’s brick in the unprotected back.

After Deacon’s shot, Blaster then focused on the blond, after she sent a blast of blinding scorching light at the sprinting spy who barely made it behind cover in time.

The fight raged on, with Golem going toe to toe with the Monitor, Blaster facing off with the blond, and Faron going up against the swordsman. Deacon took time to make pot shots at the opponents, helping to whittle them down, and even keep the Minitor from running to save the stunned and knocked down blond.

After the blond fell, Deacon Blaster and Faron were able to focus on the slasher and bring him down and Golem out bruited the Minator and brought him down too (gaining a nifty giant battle axe to enhance his already massive damage dealing punches).

With the fight over, the federal assistance arrived, took the 3 unconscious villains into custody, and the group readied to go save Mr Moss.
