Session 11 January 26, 2008

The adventuring party consists of:

Lilly the Wizard 2nd level human female wizard, played by nine-year-old Olivia

Robert the Snake 3rd level human male thief, played by six-year-old Lucas

Myra Black 1st level human female fighter NPC

Brother Claudius 1st level human male cleric NPC

Possum 1st level human male druid, played by seven-year-old Katie

Potsy 1st level human male paladin, played by late 30-something Craig

For this session, we had two new players join the crusade. My brother Craig played a paladin named Potsy and his daughter, my niece Katie, played a druid. Craig has played D&D in one form or another since I first stumbled on to the game in 1980 or 81. This would be the first time for Katie to play a role playing game.

Once we got the characters rolled up and some equipment purchased, we began with Lilly and Robert hanging out at the Tavern. The two intrepid adventurers noticed a pair of newcomers enter the establishment. Lilly made her way across the room to introduce herself while Robert stayed back and kept a close eye on the two. Lilly soon learned that the two were named Possum and Potsy and that they were brothers. Possum had been raised by a band of Ogre-Possums and as a result spoke little English. Possum was however fluent in Possum and Ogre-Possum.

(My niece Kate made all of this up about her character on the fly. That little girl has quite an imagination. In fact, she spent the beginning of the game only making squeaking and chirping sounds. Shed then whisper in her dads ear so he could have Potsy translate what Possum was saying. After a bit of this she decided she wanted to actually talk since the translating was taking too much time.)
Our merry band then set out for adventure. This time upon arriving at the Caves of Chaos they decided to explore a new cave. Turns out the cave the selected was the labyrinth cave with the minotaur. The party quickly got separated due to the disorienting effects of the caves. As a result Lilly, Myra, Claudius, and Potsy all ended up in a cave inhabited by stirges. Nearly a dozen of the beasts attacked them, with one latching on to Myra and draining her nearly dry! After a couple rounds of combat, Robert and Possum were able to locate their friends by following the noise of the battle. Reunited, the band dispatched the stirges rather quickly.

The group resolved to stay closer together and not have Robert scout ahead of the group. After several minutes of wandering and not being able to find their bearings, the group chanced upon another large cave area. Robert stepped into the cave and was surprised by the bull-rush of the minotaur!
All six party members attacked with everything they had. In the end nearly everyone was wounded and their spells were depleted, but assisted by a natural 20 rolled by Potsy (this does double damage in our game), the minotaur was beaten. There was much rejoicing, especially after locating the beasts stash of treasure. After some additional wandering, the group made their way out of the cave complex and headed for home.

(We all had a great time. After the game, everyone talked about what they would do with their money and what the next game might bring. We will certainly involve Possum and Potsy in future adventures!)

It's been over 4 months. I'm getting very concerned that you became angry at your children and confined them to some Dickensian hell-hole. Let the children play!

No, 'fraid not. The kids have been busy with other stuff recently (school related stuf and then sports) and I've been slaving away on my dissertation. I'm trying to defend the proposal in September and sit for the final defense in December or January.

We were talking just a few days ago about getting back to our game, actually. I imagine we'll have time for a game maybe next weekend. (Thanks for the concern tho'!)

September is here and I'm hoping your Dissertation defense goes well. I think that after it's done, you should celebrate with another game of C&C with the kiddos.

Weird as it is, I really want to see them complete the Caves. I guess I'm getting a visceral thrill out of seeing them play out my first adventure with unjaded eyes. Also, I'm getting good pointers on how to introduce my future kids to the game.

So get to playing! Tell 'em Luther sent you (but don't let them see my avatar or they'll never sleep again )...

Thanks. I'm actually behind my earlier schedule and will probably defend at the end of October. That'll put my final defense back to February, probably.

Regarding C&C, the kids have not shown much interest recently. Part of that is probably because I've not been too excited about it recently. I haven't had a day away from writing or from work in over a month and I'm getting worn out. Gotta' press on and get this thing done, though.

I think your suggestion is a good one. I'll get through the defense and then take a weekend off - play a big game of C&C with the kids - might let them invite a friend each to join us. They have both expressed an interest in doing that at some point.
