Hi all!
I've decided to try my hand at CKing another PbP. It will be combat-heavy, since Table-Top style RP doesn't seem to translate well for PbP. I'm thinking 2-4 players with 4-6 characters.
I'd like to see at least one post a week, but can probably do as many as three, if everyone is current. Maybe I'll impose a three day waiting limit if everyone is okay with that, to keep it moving.
I figure I'll use the setting from my last one:: check out this thread,
viewtopic.php?f=23&t=8408&p=136675&hilit=vanilla
viewtopic.php?f=23&t=8408&p=136675&hili ... la#p136675
scroll down to near bottom of page 1, maybe the 16th or 14th post, dated 9/30/2009 ... it won't matter much, will be fairly dungeon-centric.
Setting summary... vague fantasy setting, akin to Forgotten realms, though less magical/more gritty, but not low magic. Yes that's vague, sorry... there are visitors from far off lands (monks and wu-jen)... I'm a stew kind of guy, so vikings may be found w/ romans... don't panic. Wu-Jen and Monks will both be considered mysterious foreigners from some weird, far-off land (which, again, won't matter much). (Of course, if you make up a background that your monk is really a western-style puglisist we can go with that too)
I'll leave this up to you all, but I'd prefer if the party are already assembled and know each other somehow rather than role play their initial meetings and such since that can take weeks in PbP. Backgrounds are fun but probably won't amount to roll bonuses... unless they're really really really cool backgrounds.
In General:
The goal is to have fun, so don't sweat ANYTHING. I won't, so you shouldn't either. It's a game, and games = FUN!
For PbP, I think it's ok for people to play 2 characters each, because when I played in a PbP, it worked well with 2 each, (and it was cool to have 1 regular and 1 magic).
But by all means, do feel free to play only one character, it's totally up to you. It's all good.
Choose whatever class(es) you like and if needed we'll "fix" party balance later with NPCs (see that not sweating anything in action?).
Whenever possible, go with the 4th printing versions. If you don't own the books however, no sweat the only real difference is in the Barbarian. If you want to try the 4th printing barbarian, I think the stats are posted in the Ir-Ada, and one of us will be able to forward it if you need. If you insist on playing a 3rd printing barbarian, go nuts.
Attributes:
Please roll 3d6 but re-roll all 1's. (If you still get a total of 6, reroll that too). Do so 7 times and take the 6 highest, arrange as desired.
Max HP at 1st level, each level re-roll any HP rolls that are less than or equal to half the die value (e.g. reroll 1, 2 or 3 on d6, or 1-5 on d10)
Natural 1 / Natural 20:
On any attack / siege roll: a natural 1 is a fail and a natural 20 is a success.
For attack rolls, 1 = botch/fumble and the character will be inconvenineced in some way (drop weapon, lose action, catch fire).
20 = critical hit, max of damage die + roll die + mods (STR etc). Same for monsters/NPCs!
Classes:
Please build characters with 22,005 XP
Class and a half rules from 4th print PHB are a GO.
Magic users must study/pray for only 1 hour each day to refresh/swap out spells.
Divine spell casters have access to their entire list (of levels they can cast), while arcane casters have in their spell books d4+6 0-level spells, d4+3 1st level spells, d3+2 2nd level spells, 1d2 3rd level spells... you pick 'em!
Fighters can use Combat Dominance w/ Bows.
The following Optional class is available, (but by no means required!):
Wu-Jen (Constitution): The Wu-Jen are magic users who transform their own life force into magical effects on themselves and others. They are in tune with the intricacies of their life force, their bodies and the life force of all nature surrounding them. This attunement and insight allows them to channel their life force to create magical effects, that is, cast spells.
Anyone interested, Post here! We can start as soon as next Tuesday.

In case anyone is curious....
WU-JEN (Constitution)
Wu-Jen are magic users who channel their own life force into magical energy to affect themselves and others. They are in tune with the intricacies of their life force, their bodies and the life force of all nature surrounding them. This attunement and insight allows them to channel their life force to create magical effects, that is, cast spells.
Wu-Jen are always in peak physical condition and in great health for their species. This is reflected in their Hit Dice and Body Mastery special ability. A Wu-Jens health is of paramount importance to their spell casting ability, as they must literally transform their own life force into the magical effects they are attempting to create. In game terms, they spend hit points or take damage to manifest any spell they are casting.
Wu-Jen (Constitution)
Prime Attribute: Constitution
Hit Dice: d6, at 11th level onward +2 hit point
Alignment: any
Weapons: Quarterstaff, club, dagger, dart, short sword, spear, dirk, light crossbow
Armor: None
Shields: Small only, CAN cast spells while wearing/holding small shield
Abilities: Spells, Spell book (as Wizard), Body Mastery
Body Mastery: At 4th level, Body Mastery grants Wu-Jen a +1 to save vs. Death Magic, Disease, Paralysis, Petrifaction, and Poison. This bonus increases to +2 at 10th level, and +3 at 15th level.
Wu-Jen Spells: Whenever a Wu-Jen wishes to manifest a spell, they must spend hit points equal to 1+ the spell level. All spells cast by a Wu-Jen require no material components, and they do not gain any bonus spells for any high attributes.
As one's body and survival instincts naturally resist danger, the casting of spells becomes more difficult for a Wu-Jen if they are not in good health, that is, at less than full hit points. That is, they must make CON siege checks to cast spells if at or below half hp, and difficut siege checks if at or below 1/4 hp. If the Wu-Jen is above half of their maximum hit points, they can cast spells freely.
Wu-Jen Level Hit Dice BtH Maximum Spell Level EPP
1 d6 0 1 0
2 d6 +1 2 2,601

Is this going to be played here on trolllord.com, or somewhere like RPoL (
www.rpol.net) with dice rollers and maps and stuff?
www.roleplaymarket.com has a sort of neat quick and dirty tile map that can be updated round to round.

Deepfire, you are welcome to play! I'm sure your English is far better than my German! ( I studied Deutsch in school, but promptly forgot it all when i had no one to speak it with) {ich habe Deutch studieren im schule, aber nicht gesprochen und viel vergessen... LOL} Last time I tried to speak, the gentleman I was talking to said I sounded like a three year old.
Point is, You're in if you're interested! I was looking for a post every 2-3 days, but at least once a week (which really is too slow, but we all work and everything). So every 2-3 days is fine by me. If everyone is really on top of it, I'll jump ahead and go as fast as possible.
@Aergraith, you interested? I havn't had a chance to check out roleplaymarket.com yet, but if it hosts an easy sketchpad, I'm sold.

I don't know how much years have passed since your German study, aber so schlecht hört es sich gar nicht an
I'm interested and I'm happy about the opportunity to join the game.

Long enough that i don't understand what you just said.

It's not as hard as I think? something like that?
Anyway, your English seems flawless.

I might be up for this. I have alot going on right now, though. On the other hand, a post every couple of days isn't so bad. Let me sleep on it.
If I can swing this, I would probably go with a Wizard and a Ranger.

Should we post our PCs here?

Ok, lets call the game FULL unless Aergraith wants in.
Aergraith, s#!t or get off the pot.

I mean that as a tease. You're still welcome, so jump in if you want.
I've begun building a game at Roleplay Market.com and will be able to finish it tonight since the wife will be out with a girlfriend for a couple hours (what's geekier, that that is true, or that I say it without shame?)
Deepfire, you can play just one if you prefer. No problem.
Deadreborn, yeah, let's post characters here, and I'll dream up some equipment and magic item goodies that we can assume you've accrued in past adventures.
SWEET! I'm getting psyched.
So the party so far is:
Heruka's Barbarian and Rogue
Dead's Wizard and Ranger
Deeps Knight or fighter
Aergraith?
Looks like a good mix

Deepfire, I was thinking if you want to play a Dwarf knight, a horse won't work as a mount.
Any of the following works for me: Pony, Ram, Boar, Mountain lion:
the stats will all be the same as the horse specified in the knight class, just instead of hoof attack, ram would have Ramming with horns, Boar would gora with tusks, Puma would slash with claws.
DO feel free to suggest another mount, of course.

I guess one of those mountain daring Rams would fit - able to climb the steerest stones - yepp, that fits definitely
If no other player joins, I also take a second char "Illusionist"

HOPEFULLY, THIS WILL STOKE EVERYONE'S INTEREST...
Of course, we still need characters to be rolled, but here's the intro.
NB: "OOC" means "out of character" and is used to denote things not said In character (obviously) like this:
I attack the goblin, "Have at you, foul thing!"
OOC: Can I draw two swords and still attack this round?
I'll re-post this on RPM.com and we'll actually play there.
without further ado....
A bit of background: you’ve been adventuring in the nation of Tharkus, which has cities and towns, but is rich with ancient history, ruins etc, and because the areas of human and demi-human population are far-flung, there are vast tracts of wilderness and wild areas where humanoids, giants, goblinoids and other monsters hold sway. It can be a rough territory where the stout of heart may prove themselves and the weak don’t last.
You’ve found solace in the city of Riverton, having adventured from there as a base, and become regulars at an Inn there where the owner, a retired adventurer himself, takes kindly to young adventurers such as yourselves. You’ve become friends with the gruff man after helping eradicate an infestation of bothersome brownies from the inn.
Your party’s camaraderie and teamwork have become well established, and you’ve been on several adventures and are currently returning to the Inn from such an excursion.
At Present: You’ve been out in the wild about a month or so. Your band of stalwart adventurers has recently vanquished a band of hobgoblins who had conquered a Halfling village. Then you located a holy relic, the Spear of Ramat, and restored it to it’s proper place in the lost ancient temple of the forgotten god Ramat. This laid to rest the undying clerics of Ramat, trapped in undeath, and their good spirits are grateful.
Your celebration must be short, as the rainy season has arrived and you are running low on supplies. Yearning for a warm bath and clean bed after weeks on the trail, you set off in a light rain for your home-away-from-home in the city of Riverton, the “Cheap Basterd” Inn (technically it’s call the “Foamy Tankard”… it’s a long story).
OOC: You have almost no rations to speak of, and only about eight arrows for your bow (for anyone who has one). Incidentals like weapon oil are exhausted and you’re out of torches
OOC: If there’s no PC cleric, you meet a Cleric NPC named Whitlock on the way to Riverton who joins the party. He’s friendly, seems trusty, and also appears battle-worn and road-weary. If anyone plays a cleric, he doesn’t exist. J
Your travel back to Riverton goes quickly and without incident. Five days hiking takes you to within sight of the walled city and you all decide to push on rather than camp out while you’re so close (besides, most of the land here is owned by local farmers who might think it odd, at best, for a troop of adventurers to camp out in their fields).
OOC: Having a Cleric in the party for five days, everyone is at Full Hit Points, hooray!
You arrive at Riverton’s gate just as night is truly setting in. A guard stands just inside the half-closed gate, eyeing you from the small circle of light cast by a lantern that hangs from a hook atop the wall’s edge. He’s a tall human wearing a maroon cloak over thigh-high boots with the cowl of the cloak obscuring his face and keeping it out of the rain. He holds a halberd with a red-painted shaft in one hand. You recognize him as one of the “Red Sticks” or town guard (the red-shafted weapons and maroon cloak are their uniform in all Tharkan cities). You know what to expect.
"State yer bizzness" he drones. While not listening to your response, he sets the halberd aside and produces a small wooden keg with a small slot in the top. Pointing at the slot, he states the city has a 3 cp tax to enter (for the lot of you, not each).
After one of you drops the coins in the keg the Red Stick says, “You just made it." He whispers confidentially, “no one has been allowed in after dark since the orc chieftain Grundle has grown so bold these past two weeks.” If asked, he explains Grundle’s raiders have been attacking more openly and brazenly, stealing livestock and women for gods-knows-what. It’s been the talk of the town and the commoners haven’t been this scared in a long time.
The Red Stick comments on your soddenness and hints that he had kept the gate open longer than he should because he saw you coming, while un-subtly holding out his hand, palm up. Again, one of you (or Whitlock, if present) slips a few coins into the guard’s hand.
He gestures you inside and waves you off, saying automatically as he closes and bars the gate, “Welcome to Riverton. Enjoy yer stay. May we meet only as friends and not as the Law. Oh!” he adds, “Happy Plantingfest!”
(Plantingfest is a Tharkan holiday celebrating the onset of planting season, which is common knowledge to all your characters, though you did not realize it was Plantingfest already, losing track of time in the wilderness)
You set off for the Cheap Basterd, expecting a warm welcome from the owners Fildrik and Deeza, and the regulars, as you’ve become regulars yourselves over the past few months, adventuring in the area. You quicken your pace as your stomachs grumble and the rain intensifies. A short walk towards the center of town and you are looking up at the familiar sign of the Cheap Basterd Inn; an image of a tankard overflowing with beer foam, with the graffiti “cheap Basterd” scrawled across it in red paint. The usually jovial din is conspicuously absent, however.
You enter the somber common room and find a muddy Fildrik bleeding through heavy bandages on this legs, arms and head, and Deeza in hysterics as the wizened, ancient-looking Old Meg hovers around Fildrik, tending his wounds. Many gossiping townsfolk lurk about the common room. Fildrik spots you and tries to stand, but his injured legs won’t hold him.
You get the details quickly enough – the Orc chieftain Grundle has captured their daughter Flora while she was “off in the woods, playing ranger” as her mother Deeza puts it. Fildrik was nearly killed following after her, and most of the adventuring hero type regulars are away for the holiday. You know Flora is a capable fighter for an untrained regular person, but “she’ll need rescuing if she’s to live, and no one but yerselves can do it” Fildrik grumbles at you, half demanding, half pleading. He adds that with the rain, you’ll have to set off just about immediately if you’re to have any hope of following their tracks. He knows the orc band was headed north, you can find three dead orcs where Fildrik fought them, about half an hour north of Riverton.
He waives impatiently at the two serving wenches and they immediately disappear into the kitchen. As they scurry off, Fildrik barks at his helper Smoot, a dim-witted orphan who lives in the Inn’s basement, to bring you arrows, oil, fresh clothes, rations for a month’s travel, and water skins and whatever else you all ask for. Three wenches return promptly bearing trays with a steaming feast for you and two pitchers of ale.
What say you?
