Glad you like it! I still have to tighten some stuff but I am enjoying it behind the CK screen!
Here is a summary of the first encounter:
Your are a small band of mercenaries on a contract from the exiled Prince Lucindo to investigate the Wizard, Egarim's, dark tower any evidence of the missing King.
You encountered the guardian of the tower, Ebonacht, the Black Dragon. Following an intense battle with the great wyrm, the Dragon fled to lick its wounds and the party entered the Dark Palace to find 5 colored doors.
You entered the Garden through the green door. To your amazement you seem to be back outside in a beautiful grove on a sunny day. You initial foray into the garden was met with the discovery of a man-eating plant, and interesting circle of mushrooms, a dead minotaur with a glowing axe embedded in it's chest and a Manticore of which you quickly dispatched.
Amongst the remains of the Manticore's nest you find the ambitious Belthazed's scroll that details the following:
“I have finally won the privilege of an audience with Master
Egarim, and he has agreed to allow me to become his apprentice
– though I must first pass a trial. He has instructed me to
meet him in his chambers atop the tower, where he will give me
my first lesson on my path to glory. However, to gain entry to
the tower, I must find five crystal keys which will enable me to
be transported to the tower. This shall be no easy task, but
Master Egarim has assured me that anyone worthy to be his
apprentice should have no trouble with it.
Each key is protected by a guardian, who I will either have to
defeat, deceive, or bargain with to gain the keys. Once I have
all the keys, I will be able to activate the transporter device in
the foyer which will enable me to enter the tower.
I have elected to begin my quest in the master’s garden. This
should be easy enough.”
Here is the loot for Game Session 1:
Flail of expert craftsmanship (+1 to hit, but not damage)
jade and ivory religious icon worth 1000 gp
Crossbow with its firing mechanism ruined by the sludge,
Rod of Withering
Tome of understanding +2
and a suit of padded armor +1
Ring ???
Wand ???
500gp
Rod of Withering
Ebonacht, Black Dragon
Man-eating Plant
Manticore
Total GP for the party: 1500 (375 ea)
Encounter (incl.treasure) XP per member (4): 3181

Great job Marc! Had a blast playing Midnight.
I am good for Thursday as well (or Fri/Sat). My wife left an hour ago for drama competition with some students and won't be back til Sunday so I'll be good to go after Jennifer settles down for the evening. (much like last night). This happens at anytime between 8 an 9 EST.
If Thurs is no good for the other guys, I can do Fri or Sat night this week. I probably won't be able to play twice each week, but this week seeing my wife is gone, I am good to go.
I'll post a copy of my PC shortly.
Marc, are you going with the XP in the PHB or my tables (on my thread)? Once I know, I'll post Midnight.

After over 2 years of not being able to game, I'm all but a novice player, so I have noooooo problem with a "novice CK running the show".
What's open for characters, is it all by the book from the PHB, or are there other options/house rules? is there multi class options/ class & a half etc?
I'm kind of interested in playing a Pankrationist (there is a couple of house ruled one floating around here on the forum), for some reason that bug has been in the back of my mind for over a year. If none of them work for your game, I might play a monk but take out the oriental flavor and insert Greek/Roman flavor and call it good. Either that, or a fighter/thief or ranger. Heck I'd even play a MU if the group needs one (and if you know me you know I hate playing a MU, but I'm that desperate to play).
What is the level/exp starting gold etc?
Thanks for the chance to play.

Willllll do! It'll be good to game again!
Looking at the rest of the party, I think I'll play a marksman/rogue or some class and a half version of it ...
Unfortunately, no joy for me to play tonight. I have half a kitchen floor tile to lay down tonight.
Oh yeah. what version of map tools are you all using this go around? I'll load it over the weekend and be ready for Tuesday next week.

Anything in the PHB is allowed and use the info from Rob to roll up your character. (I am going with core rules until I get up to speed on running things.) We are on maptools 84 for the game.
Look forward to having you!

Ok, the dice were rolled and it came out good.
I'm putting together a fighter/thief, using the class and half rule. (think a pilist/skirmisher for the fighter, not the heavy armor & bearded axe type of fighter), and I'm almost finished with the equipment etc. However, it just dawned on me that I don't know the starting exp. What are we starting with? Looking at the other characters, it looks like something like 15-20k exp, but that is just a WAG on my part.
Let me know the exp, and I'll have a finished character for you tomorrow. Plus, I'll make sure I can get maptools up and running.
Hope you've had a good weekend.

Marc. Started a thread to get the xp progression for a class and 1/2 figured out for Midnight. Its here:
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=11000&p=171656#p171656
Koralas makes the most sense to me. If you read it different, then let me know. Here is the table:
Code: Select all
Level Death Assassin XP Cleric XP
Priest XP (Full) (1/2)
1 (0) 0 0 0
2 (1) 2,876 1,751 1,125
3 (1) 4,626 3,501 1,125
4 (2) 9,601 7,001 2,600
5 (2) 16,601 14,001 2,600
6 (3) 30,201 25,001 5,200
* Note this is 1/2 the XP required to have advanced to the next level.
Note: Love the title; Death Priest
NOTE: LOVE knowing how to make tables in the threads now

Lurker wrote: However, it just dawned on me that I don't know the starting exp.
Les, Marc never really gave us a set amount of XP to start. Just told us to roll up a 5th level character. So, if your going with class and 1/2 like I did, and fighter/thief is your 'blended' class, then it will be Fighter 5 / Thief 2 (similar to start like mine). If you follow koralas info on progression for my PC, its pretty easy to come up with a similar table for your combo.
If you need help with it, let me know and I'll post it here.

Character History
Hod is a younger son of a minor merchant (the Barras) from the minor city of [insert a small city/large town that fits the setting]. His mother was the older daughter of an old veteran solder/centurion. Hod disliked his father and some of his older brothers (as money grubbing silver shaving merchants) and worshiped his maternal grandfather. When not listening to his stories he ran wild on the streets of the town. At age 16 he enlisted as a skirmish/pilist (being strong enough to fight as a line infantry man, but even more skilled with thrown weapons and the too commoner of a weapon-the godentag-. Hod’s intelligence and wisdom was quickly noticed and he was used for scouting missions (working with rangers, huntsmen and other light infantry) in addition to skirmishing.
Over 5 years of enlistment he took part in numerous minor campaigns and 2 years of heavy fighting. In 1 campaign the scouts he was with were ambushed but he was able to save 5 of the fellow scouts, and eventually located 7ish more surviving scouts and rangers. Over 3 weeks they ran rampant causing confusion behind the enemy lines, spreading lies and fals information among the attacking forces, stealing horses, and even 2 massagers satchels with letters dispatches and a copy of a map, and enough gold to pay 3 months wages for a full company. His band was able to get word back to their army where the 2 main supply points were and the plan to capture a castle vital to the Marshal through deceit. This earned him the nickname of Cadda’Dulf, and the surviving scouts and the name the Little Pack, and earned him the necklace and bracers for distinction, daring and luck (the 3 rings on the necklace). Unfortunately, in the next campaign, the officer appointed to lead the scouts turned coat and convinced most of the new scouts to follow him. The “little Pack” figured out the deceit and was able to get word to the Marshal before he was ambushed. As punishment the scouts were disbanded and decimated (1 of 5 killed). The Pack was saved from drawing the lots with the rest of the scouts. This was the last major event of the campaign and after it the opposition retreated and sued for peace. With the peace, the military was disbanded.
Hod returned home, but soon left to adventure (and unofficial serve the Marshal in any way he can). And over the last (3ish) years has traveled and adventured.
Hod is slightly indifferent to his clothing, keeping them well mended but not fashionable, but is fanatic about keeping his arms and armor oiled/cleaned and repaired. Like any solder he enjoys gambling, and drinking but does neither to excess, but is also fairly pious and pays homage to (1-3 gods/goddesses that good soldiers worship). He also prefers sharing a flask and tossing dice with commoners/stable hands etc than hobnobbing with elites and the well off. He is lettered and read a little so can and will associate with learned/lettered individuals -has acted as scout/guard & companion to a few of them when they traveling between university cities and centers of learning, but again he does not enjoy anyone that sees themselves as inherently superior (twice he saw “superior/knightly” men born into rank sell themselves for a bag of silver and gold)
Can you post the link to maptools? I'm on a new computer so don't have any of my old links.
When is the game starting tomorrow?
Thanks

Great character write-up Les! Should be a good game tonight. I think I will put Ele in the background now that you have 4 players.
Summary of the last session:
Following the quick dispatch of the Manticore and subsequent looting of his lair, the party made their way North toward the dead Minotaurs. Midnight moved to investigate the glowing Battle Axe in one of the dead Minotaurs hand. Amazingly, the mutilated corpse began to rise and move toward the cleric. Before Midnight could react, a disgusting maggot-like creature burst forth from the chest of the animated corpse and attached itself to the cleric with its venom dripping jaws injecting its poison to brielfy paralyze the cleric. The remaining party members launched a counter attack and ultimately defeated the vile parasite.
The skirmish with the fleshcrawler depleted the adventurers both physically and mentally. The party decided to rest for the night in mushroom patch before continuing its search for the Guardian of the garden. Moving North the next day, the party found itself navigating a hedge maze in which a colony of giant ants and swarming giant bees offered some resistance to the party's progress. Eventually, the maze gave way to an large area encased in webbing. The invisibility sphere cast on the party provided enough cover for the companions to avoid being trapped by the giant arachnid in the area and ultimately provided enough advantage to defeat the spider.
Continuing north in the Garden, the travelers noticed a grove of Oak trees and was well-received by the Guardian of this area, Oakheart the Treant. Oakheart kindly offered his key to the party if the party agreed to remove a mole that has been disturbing the roots of his grove. Oakheart also suggested that the party converse with his friend Otto, the Satyr who regaled them with riddles and lore of the dungeon and also provided access to his flowing river of curative water.
Well rested, entertained and healed the party begins its search for the "mole"...
XP: Tulwar, Ele, Fu, Midnight
Giant SoldierAnts (182 xp)
Giant Bees (182 xp)
Giant Spider (365 xp)
Fleshcrawler (105 xp)
Role Playing: 300 xp each (maze, riddles, not killing everything that moves!)
509 XP each
Here is recap of the Satyr's stories:
“I have been here in the garden for many years now, but I have
also wandered around the rest of this palace. I once had the
nerve to visit the grand hall. The music drew me there…but
when I glimpsed the dancers…I froze in fear! They were both
ghosts! I thought they’d kill me sure, but instead, they insisted
that I play my pipes for them while they danced…”
“The library is probably the best place to go in this palace.
There is a winged chap with a lion’s body who lives there. A
right knowledgeable fellow. We have had many discussions
about the nature of this place. If anybody can help you get into
the tower, it is him.”
“Beware the laboratory! There are far worse ways to die in
there than in battle with beasts! Machines, traps, and foul
fumes and philters have claimed many lives within. I have also
heard that the head of the lab is a bit deranged.”
“I hear that the wizard who created this place is ancient
indeed. He raised this palace from the ground, and filled it with
beasts and traps summoned from all corners of the world. I
think that this place may be more than a mere building…There
is something different here. Magic does not work the same… it
has its own rules…”
Game continues tonight...8-8:30 EST see ya there!
