Maptools error

Weird.

Was trying to open maptools tonight and received an unexpected error:

"Unable to access jarfile maptool-*.jar"

This is ver .85 which I have been running for a year or more.

Tried .86 and .87 - same.

Reinstalled .85 error again.

Anyone else having this problemo?

Yeah, doesn't seem to like wildcards anymore. Open the .bat file you use to launch it in notepad and put the actual name of the .jar file in place of the map tool-*.jar

I had the same problem. You can use Aergraith's excellent suggestion, or instead of using the launcher (which causes the problem) just use the batch file shortcut in your maptools directory that says something like maptools 512 or maptools 1G (I choose 1G). (the error is the result of upgrading java from version 6 to 7 I think)

Worked for me

If we all continue to have problems, we will just have Nwelte prepare handmade diagrams on linen describing each round of every battle and mail those to us.

Duh!

Thanks, it didn't occur to me to run the bat file. After reading your posts, I did remember this happened before in like . . version .63 or something.

MT works fine.

:)

Spoke too soon.

I was able to launch MT, but when I tried to open my campaign, a huge error message appeared. It more or less indicated that my campaign file MT version was incompatible with .85

I then tried .86 and .87 - each time a DOS screen flashed and disappeared and MT would not open.

Same with .85

And now everything seems to be hosed.

:P

I might try a reinstall of .85

Sounds like the issues I had trying to sign into Nate's last game session. Does not bode well for today.

Reinstalling MT didn't work, but uninstalling Java 7 and then installing Java 6 did work. Everything seems to be OK.

I originally tried to get an earlier Java 7 update (before 15) but couldn't seem to find one, but I'm OK with this.

[Having said that - I do know that this early version may have some security issues, as does earlier updates of Java 7]

:)

I had problems getting it started too. Using the "Launcher" then the ones marked 512 Mbyte and 1Gig, etc... None worked. Then I clicked on the one simply marked "maptool-1.3.b87" that is also labelled as an executable jar file, and it works fine.

Yep, for me too. The launcher doesn't work, so I run the jar or the bat and they both work.

Weird.

I'll wait a few weeks and maybe try to install Java 7 again and see what happens.

I've been using that start up method since I updated Java a few weeks ago.

After reading this thread, I tried to get into MT. No probs with MT, but I can't get into Nate's game. It says my password is wrong. Did we change it at some point?

I don't recall if it is no password or something like "player". This is the only game I still play in Maptools, so I'm able to save the PW from session to session.

Java just notified me there is an another update available. Oh no! In the notification it says it _may_ uninstall java 6 when updated, so keep that in mind if you are trying to stick to java 6

Hopefully that means they are removing JAVA 6 because they finally made JAVA 7 fully compatible.

I admire your sunny optimism!

My reading of the maptools forums is that the problem is not "java 7 is not compatible with maptools" but rather "maptools is not built to work with java 7". Any fix would be on the maptools end, making themselves compatible with Java 7. And they have been talking about that for a year and a half

I guess the people behind maptools are intentionally making it go obsolete.

I was messing around with both MT versions I've been using (.85 and .87), and it seemed to me that .85 was working just fine with Java 7. I was hoping to get a truer test last night during Rhu's game, but he had to work and cancelled. Maybe tonight, before the game, I'll start up my .85 and have some of you guys connect to see how it does.
