Again, I'd love to get magic armor of some type, but as we saw last night ... my ac with the master work armor and shield (and dex) is higher than Sarosis' . So, he or the gray bearded one should get the bracers.

Bracers of defense will not stack with any kind of armor.

That's what I thought... same deal with the ring of protection +2 we have in our stash. I can still use my Ranger skills with a Chain shirt or a breastplate, so like Lurker suggested that will be the first order of business when we get back to town.

not even mundane armor? I was fairly sure they wouldn't stack with magic armor, but thought thy would enhance non magical armor.

The ring of protection will stack with non-magical armor or the bracers of defense. So master work armor or just plain better (non-magical) armor will work.

Bracers of defense acts as armor. Stacking them would be like stacking leather with chainmail and expecting the bonuses to stack.

Obviously they are abstractions and shouldn't really stack, but the sword does have to penetrate the chain mail AND the leather. It's not totally loony for them to stack and give you a dexterity of 3 and weigh what they both weigh + an unwieldiness penalty.

I just assume that there is a leather jerkin of some kind under the chainmail to begin with and it is already figured into the AC of the chainmail.

In that case, we need to get the ranger master work chain shirt, hauberk or a steel breastplate, and give him the ring.

Wait, didn't the elf get the ring when Sarosis couldn't wear it due to the magic leather?

I would allow that to work as magical hauberk. At whatever the magical bonus is.

A mail hauberk +1 will give me +6 to my AC. Unfortunately, that is the same as the Cuir Bouille +2 I'm already wearing... if I went with an Expert Mail Hauberk, assuming one can be made back in town, and wore the +2 ring that would be a net gain for me. The other option is to wear the plate mail from the antipaladin we just killed and forego the Ranger abilities. Thoughts guys?

Cuir Bouille, I thought you had magical regular leather, that is better than I thought you had ... the expert and +2 ring gets my vote. That is if the elf isn't already using the ring ...

I'd argue against the plate, you are a ranger and your abilities are critical so don't go that route.

With that, when we get to town, we will have magic plate, a full magic chain suite, and magic cuir Bouille to sell, oh yeah and the bracers too. If we 'sold' them to the duke, I bet he could pull strings and get that expert armor for you, push the commission for my magic breast plate along, and work on something for gravel beard.

I'd say the elf needs something too, but as he avoids fights like the plague (almost as much as the not thief does) it would be a waste to get him magic armor

Back when I first played, none of us owned or had read the books. The DM borrowed his brother's books. So we thought you wore multiple suits of armor. We also thought that the description of XP for monsters in the back of the DMG that said stuff like "80 xp +1/hp" meant you gained 1 hp each time you killed one.

Needless to say, our 3rd level characters with three sets of armor and 211 hp were tricky to defeat

We definitely want the ranger to have a good AC. Keeping the front line alive and happy makes for a happy (and alive) wizard.

I propose the following. After we escape the clutches of this cultist deathtrap, we make for the forest of the elves, where my fair sister led that train of rescued elven maidens to be returned to their families.

While there, Aeschelon will request an audience with the king. The arcane archer will call upon all of his powers of persuasion, as well as the wit and wisdom of his player

After that fails miserably, we will point out to the king that we have performed a great service for his people. In return, we humbly request that he ask his finest armorer to craft a suit of finest elven chain, to be bestowed upon the honorable ranger.

Of course, we understand that such a gift may require that said ranger take the hand of a princess in marriage, or slay an ogre (or perhaps slay a princess and marry an ogre- we elves are whimsical like that) but even this offer we shall accept.

Then we head to the egg of phoenix module and do what we do best (muck up a classic module)
