Some random thoughts:

Essentials does indeed correct and/or explain some things better than LR4APs.

I haven't created an avatar since 2006 on Lejendary.com

I haven't played LA since 2007 where I used a pre-gen (but Chris Clark used my char that I mention above.)

I might be willing to run Tree's cleric in addition to my own char, if Kayo allows it (since we really need one).

LA is an outstanding game . . a real thinking man's game for some avatars.

It does seem like an LM must have an excellent grasp of the rules (more so than D&D methinks) and that Kayo is such an LM!!

The artwork in LR4APs is astounding!

I really think we're all gonna have a great time with this game!!

:D

Hello Penny, and welcome to the game! Baba Yaga is a great choice!

A few things that you should know, when figuring your Speed-based Ability Scores, you start by multiplying Speed by 4 then apply the percentage of that Score, with additions to Speed taken into account prior to multiplication.

Your Shamanism Ability is actually 78 (Speed x 4 + 2 from 11th Rank)

Your final Ability is always at a flat 10, no bonuses are ever added to it during avatar creation, though it can be raised in game.

Also, each Observance, Call Up, Masque, Power, Memory Tablet, and Materials (12 uses each) cost a pick from the Magical List.

You do not roll (the Special Table the only exception) for your picks but choose two of these options:

Method One
5 different or like* items for each chosen Ability.
3 different or like* items for each mandatory Ability.
1 roll on the Special Table

Method Two:
9 different or like* items for the initially chosen Ability.
7 different or like* items for the second chosen Ability.
2 rolls on the Special Table
*Only one pick of cash is permitted, otherwise, though, multiple selections of the same item are otherwise allowed.

Welcome to the gang of ne'er do wells that waste your husband's Monday evenings!

I have a question though.... I'll admit that I was never that strong on Slavic myth (mainly where it mingled with Germanic/Norse) but, ... wasn't Baba Yaga a hag with a house with legs of a chicken that could run around and trap children for her to eat ???? I may be thinking of another myth or something though

Either way, as long as you don't mind healing us when we (all to often and at times needlessly) get into a scrape you are welcome at the campfire ! :)

Baba Yaga, in our world and in Lejendary Earth is at times seen as a totemic figure and goddess.

Rgr, not doubting you (or PW)

I just wanted to clarify what she was before the game. This way when I hear the intonement to Baba, my character may be cautious (knowing that she is a earth mother, that can at times be helpful - but will eat children if they are disrespectful, but won't automatically assume she is outright evil.

Thanks for all the welcomes! I can tell already this will be fun. Still working on the crunchie bits (oops) but I took some time to read the previous posts for your back stories. Very interesting! I love how things are already fitting together.

Peg Powler lives in the Sibrul Forest. She is pretty much a wild creature who doesn't recognize the authority of humans. As far as she is concerned the forest is itself and couldn't possibly belong to anyone. She isn't unfriendly just baffled by human ways. All life is sacred to the Mother. The idea that some animals are more equal than others just doesn't resonate. From time to time people come to her for aid -- she is a talented midwife, can set bones and knows the healing properties of herbs. If she can help ease someone's suffering, she will. Even if the person is a human. Little girls sometimes come to her to ask for their fortunes. Oh, how she laughs to see their terror as they so carefully approach the 'forest witch'. Peg won't perform divinations for children. They are still growing and creating their stories. It would be wrong to influence their decisions in any way but she is happy to share tales of Baba Yaga and what happens to little girls who don't mind their mothers or the whispers of soul.

She has of course seen Egor from a distance. She thinks maybe he cuts down too many trees. Peg also doesn't approve of killing animals in exchange for coin. Egor seems a bit wasteful but isn't that the way with all the tall folk? Yet, there are worse ones out there. At least he doesn't violate the Mother the way the miners in the hills do. That is pure blasphemy and fills her with a raging green fire. She is also aware of Eboergar and Sir Edwin Gothmyer. She has seen them move through the forest but has never introduced herself. They do trample things with those silly horses but they only seem to take a reasonable amount of game so no quarrel there.

I don't think she is aware of the mage or bravo yet. Or the warlock! I think Roweena will fascinate her.

Peg does belong to a coven. They get together for the holidays. Mostly she keeps to herself gathering food and enjoying the beauty that surrounds her.

I love healing and suspect I will have plenty of work after reading who you all are!

About Baba Yaga: basically, what Kayola says. And she only ate the bad ones. I thought she seemed a good fit for a witch living in a Boreal forest. You know, Peg saw Baba Yaga fly past once. Granted, that happened after one too many mushrooms but it was what it was. She has yet to catch a glimpse of that amazing house though. Perhaps one day if she is very lucky ...

Feeling kind of stressed out about the Shamanic magic system. This is kind of what the process looks like to me so far. Please let me know if I have misunderstood.

As a witch/wycce my ceremonial path must be Thwarting Evil.
If I want to heal someone I have to begin with an observance requiring propitiation and votive materials. (that takes about 2 minutes)

Once that stage is set I need to reach a new level of consciousness through a ceremony involving drumming, dancing, chanting etc. In my case I would like (with your permission) to repeat a bird call -- maybe something like the Carolina Wren scold. This process takes about 3 minutes during which time I am also completing my Instruction of the Bane Fighter who I am calling upon to help us.

When that is completed I invoke the Masque of Removing Malign Channel (9 seconds with a power cost of 9)

Then I am able to use the power Allieviate Wounds on one person.

So. If I understand correctly, this is probably not something that should be done in combat but would have to wait until the dust settles. Would I have to go through the entire process if two people are hurt or could I jump to casting Alleviating Wounds on the second person?

The general powers, which Heal is usually listed in, do NOT require anything being done prior to invoking the Heal power. At least that is how it is under Theurgy, I don't know where the Witch Order is written up at. Only the higher powers, the rites and usually 20 Invocations listed under the specific "path" you take require the 2 minute preparation. Again, for Theurgy, and I am presuming the Witch Order would be set up much the same way.

Ok. Some of the stress is easing. TY

On page 155 under Shamanism Ability and Powers I read: "Only when at least one Calling Up and one Masque are known can the individual then possess a Power that is derived there from."

I took it to mean that every time I wanted to cast a power I had to go through the whole process. But I can see how it might mean that the avatar just has to do it once in her lifetime to gain the power.

Once you have that power do you have to record it on the memory tablets to use it? Like, if it was recorded 5 times, it could be used 5 times?

No, AEP's determine how often we can cast spells. This is a mana points system, not a memorization system, so you only need to have 1 copy of a given power on the tablets.

Going by the page number you give, I am assuming your using something other than the print book I am using. So cannot answer that one.

Just finished talking with Rom, and he is well on his way to creating his Avatar. So that looks like everyone is taken care of. Tomorrow I'll get on Skype an hour earlier than normal just in case anyone has questions or wants to chat before game time. Also, we can spend time before the actual game play begins introducing your Avatars and deciding together how you are connected, whether that be loosely, old friends, acquaintances, strangers etc.

Looking forward to running this, but keep in mind this is my first experience LMing LA, and I hope you will bear with me if we have a few rough spots along the way.

See you all tomorrow!
