Some Questions for the Skype Crowd

I'm trying to get into this and I have a few questions about this.

1) What do I need?

2) Are there issues with a dial up connection communicating with a faster server?

3) Is there anything else I need to know?

You need to download the program (for free) which you can do here

You also need a microphone+computer speakers, or a headphone with a microphone

I have only used it on broadband, and some others are DSL I think. It does say that broadband is "preferred".

You can check for help and FAQs here

After you download it, install it (double click on the file you downloaded) and it should take you through picking a username and password.

Anyone who wants to call you needs to know your username. Once you have done it once, it will be added to their contact list (and their name to yours, I think), they can "ring" you when you are online to join you to the game's conference call.

To join a game that is already started, just ring the host, he will get a ringing phone sound at his end, and add you to the game

And remember, internet gaming is a bit different than face to face (a few more technical hang ups, inevitability of 2 people talking at once sometimes, and so on)

Skype *will* work on dialup....if memory serves, you get a lot of 'delay' and skipping the more people you're connected to.

We have a SKYPE game tomorrow for Rigon's Dragonlance Game. If you can download SKYPE (Which I think is around 25 Mbytes, so it will take you a good while) you can test it out by signing in and listening. Heck maybe Rigon will even allow you to try playing. I think there are only 4 players, so he just might.

The only piece of knowledge I can impart is that you won't have a map available, so listening to the DM and asking for additional details is crucial.

Yeah, I am going to have to call my provider and find out what my ISP is so I can host and use Gametable.

Tanx for the tips. I was out of the house all day and forgot to look at mics. *D'oh*. Just as well though I have to be out of town all next weekend anyway.

You probably have a router, so you need to forward the port...
portforward.com should help...
