Ooph. I used to be decently familiar with the 3E rules but I found character creation to be confusing as to how to know how many points you are using in a build (how to count the points), etc. Depending on when this campaign is set to begin I may not have enough time to properly get myself in order with the rules to be able to play well.
Does anyone know if/where ninja are covered in the main rulebook? A lot of my material on ninja/shinobi are from previous editions.

It is in the school section for the scorpion clan, the very last class.
If you want I can make your character for you using your 'blueprint'.
Or if you need any help I am on skype all the time using the name Titania_Lefey.
It is set for the thursday after next. but don't worry too much about it, there are people who are just beginning in this group and a few who have not played since 1st edition.

I am really hoping to get into an ongoing long-term L5R campaign so I really hope this will be a hit and maybe that there would be a possibility of something more long-term.
I was going to join a different online L5R campaign before but it never got off the ground due to the GM. I rolled a Hida Bushi. I have posted him below. Is this build acceptable? He is a 90 point build (due to the GM's campaign requirements) but you can feel free to bump him down to 80 if you wish, while keeping his most butt-kicking stuff of course! lol
Hida Katsumi, Crab Hida Bushi
Air: 2
Reflexes 3
Awareness 2
Earth: 3
Stamina 4
Willpower 3
Fire: 2
Agility 3
Intelligence 2

Perception 2
Void: 2
School/Rank: Hida Bushi 1
Family: Hida Family (Daimyo: Hida Kuon)
Glory: 1.0
Status: 1.0
Honor: 1.5 (15)
Insight: 127
Advantages: Bishamons Blessing (2) [For every 2 Raises you successfully make on an Attack Roll, you gain an additional Free Raise], Strength of the Earth (4) [The Wound level penalty for damage is decreased by 10], Large (2) [You are 62. The TN for all rolls you make in social situations is increased by 5, however, you roll one additional die on all damage rolls made for melee attacks].
Disadvantages: (10 pts) Shadowlands Taint (1), Lost Love (2) [Whenever your lost love is mentioned, your TNs are raised by 5 until you spend a Void Point to regain your focus. Spending the Void Point in this manner avoids a relapse for the remainder of the day], Brash (3) [You must make an Honor Roll at TN 20 to keep control of your emotions when insulted.], Antisocial (2) [You keep one fewer die on social Skill Rolls], Obligation (2) {Duty bound to avenge the abduction of his lost love at all costs to those who took her} [You must do everything in your power to fulfill this obligation, even if it means giving your life. Failure to do so can have consequences as detailed on pg 116].
Kata: Shell of Stone (Prep Time: 10 mins, Duration: 60 mins, Special: Must be used with heavy armor, Effect: When you use this kata, you may either double your effective Defense Skill or double the bonus gained from wearing heavy armor. You may not declare a Full Attack, and you roll one fewer die for Initiative and attack rolls. Void: None).
Skills
Battle (Specific Enemy: Shadowlands) (1),
Defense [Agility] (3),
Heavy Weapons [Agility] Emphases: Tetsubo (5) {Your targets Armor or Carapace is reduced by 1 vs. your Heavy Weapons attacks}
Jiujutsu [Agility](3) {Unarmed combat. Anyone can use this Skill unskilled without penalty. Rank 3: You roll an extra die for damage in unarmed combat}.
Kenjutsu [Agility] (3) Emphases: Katana
Kyujutsu [Reflexes] (1),
Lore (Shadowlands) (1)
Techniques: Way of the Crab (You may add your Earth Ring to the total of any attack and damage roll in melee. You may ignore the TN penalties for wearing heavy armor for all Skills except Stealth).
**Character Points left over: 1 from xp (90 pt. build)

I'd have to shift around a few points to make him rank two, but other than that he is perfectly acceptable.
I'll be starting on your ninja now, prepare to be amazed.

You did say you had the... 1st edition books right? the point values should have remained the same.
No, I have none of the books. the closest Jaybird and I came was Oriental Adventures, which is 1st edition _AD&D_
However, I am fine with him as is. Change nothing! You got the ronin part nice and flavorful, and the special weapon ability sounds like exactly what I described (fast and deadly)
In honour of the quest I have undertaken to restore my family honour (which has been stolen from us unfairly) I have written a nice gentle haiku:

Thats what I think I achieved! let me know your thoughts.
Name: Bayushi _________ (I'll let you choose)
Clan: Scorpion
School: Shosuro Shinobi/Bayushi Bushi
Rank:2/1
Insight: 161/141 (the way I am doing this is you count the rings as normal, but for bayushi bushi you only add the insight from the skills from the School package)
Earth: 2
Stamina:3
Water:2
Fire: 3
Air: 3
Void: 3
Primary weapon:
Kasari- gama: (it is worth it, trust me, I use one with my ... scout)
roll to attack: 8k5
DR: 2k2/2k1
Shosuro Blade:
roll to attack: 6k3
DR 6k2
Special: free raise on poison, poison resist at +5 TN

ninja ranged weapons 3
Stealth (sneaking) 5
underworld 2
chain weapons 5
courtier (political manuevering) 1
etiquette 1
Iajutsu 1
kyujutsu 1
acting 4
advantages:
Ambidextrous: you may dual wield with only a + 5 to your TN
Daredevil: you add +5 to your rolls to athletics, once per session in a action that the GM considers foolhardy or daring, you may roll a single die. If the result is higher than 5, you may add the result to a single Skill or trait roll involved in that action.
Great Potential (Stealth) the number of raises you can make are not limited by your void. when you reach rank 10 in this skillyou 'explode' on 9's and 10's, and gain an additional 10 insight.

Disadvantages:
Dark secret: your a ninja

The Shadow has no Mercy
your raises on stealth and attack rolls ar not limited by your void, when your target does not know your there. If you are using a skill with which you ahve Great Potential you gain 2 free raises. You may add your Firex2 to your TN to be hit when not wearing armor (I will allow Ashigaru armor to bypass this)

Its your family name. you always have to have your family name. unless your ronin, or EXTREMELY well known, like a newly appointed Family Daimyo.

Is it the case that a ninja/shinobi character must also dual class in a way as a samurai? I understand this is realistic in Rokugan society and even in a historic context but is it a rule that must be adhered to in the game as well? As a Bushi I can accompany the group on normal samurai duties while secretly spying on our opponents as a shinobi and carrying out top secret assassinations for my clan.
I am asking because I posted this character on the Alderac forums and a guy looked at the character and asked me "are you getting multiple schools advantage for free?" Another guy told me to drop my stealth to 2 or 3 because even at that reduced level I would easily be beating people's perception rolls. I think you made a wonderful character though and I am very excited.
I have been trying to get into an L5R campaign for a long time. I went out and bought the 3E core rulebook, creatures of Rokugan, and Emerald Empire books but have not been able to find a campaign yet. The one I tried to get into with my Hida Bushi never got off the ground. I am really hopeful that there will be the possibility that this campaign might go longterm if successful initially.

yes you are getting the multiple school advantage for free. I am 'granting' it to you due to how the shinobi are supposed to have a cover class, to me I think that the Scorpion would want their ninja's covers to be as convincing as possible.
if you want to lower your stealth, go ahead, distribute the points elsewhere. It is just my opinion about the high Stealth. I'll just tell you this, people with the battle and investigation skills use those skills in compilation with the raw perception check to spot ambushers.
So say an enemy has a 2 investigation and a 3 perception. He will roll 5k3 to spot you. It is pretty much the same with the battle skill. If you lowered your stealth skill to a 2 you would be rolling the same dice as the guy trying to spot you, so it is alot more chancy.
but if you want to distribute the points elsewhere it is your choice. I just wanted to give you my reason.
Titania
P.S. I'm hoping that it will be a hit too, I've wanted to GM some stuff for awhile now. And if it turns out that it is not so much a hit, we can still keep the chracters and have several 1 nighters when we are bored, using these characters. So it will at least be a sporadic campaign.

Oh yeah, forgot to break down your current stealth roll. Stealth skill, 5. Agility, 3. So you roll 8k3, plus 5 due to the sneaking emphasis. You only keep your agility, not you skill... I believe, I'll brush up on it to make sure.

Tell the guy from the AEG board to read up on Shinobi Ninja's, the school description explicitly describes how they are trained, secretly, while attending another school openly.
So even though it doesn't say they gain the "Multiple School " advantage, the description of the Shinobi training makes it very clear that this is exactly what happens for every Shinobi. Plus getting caught is a very, very, bad thing for a Shinobi Ninja. It usually means death for the character.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Okay here is the character list.
A Ronin Murimoto/Dragon Bushi
A Scorpion.... Bushi
A Akodo/Lion Bushi
A Sea Dragon Shugenja
A Crab/Hida Bushi
and a Hiruma Scout.
I may have to NPC a Shugnja... hmm.
Otherwise it is a completely awesome group. You guys will probably be in the Crab/ Shadowlands. Either that or hired by the Sea Dragon Clan for something, their the only ones who would hire such a diverse and slightly hostile group.

Is the Sea Dragon Clan detailed in the core rulebook or is their acquisition and formation something that has recently occurred in the card game plot? I'd like ot read up on them. I think I will begin reading my books again tonight. I have the 3E rulebook, Emerald Empire, and Creatures of Rokugan. I have a ton more PDfs from 2E and 3E as well.
Also, the Shugenja NPC: is that a character you want to portry yourself Titania? The reason I ask is my girlfriend seemed to be very interested in this campaign when heard me talking about it and she may end up looking for a spot. I don't want to overcrowd this campaign though and I am not certain if there would even be room. If there is no room then there is no room and I am perfectly fine with that. Thanks for getting this all together!

the Sea Dragon Clan is something that happened in our original L5R campaign that was GM'ed by a very good friend (and the best GM I have encountered). So it is more a home clan. I shall post a summary of them soon.
I would love for your GF to join. Just make sure she would be willing to play a person that could do alot of medicine skill/ healing spell stuff. We only have 1 healer for 5 samurai (unless I miscounted-which is possible)
Whether she heals becuase of the medicine skill or being a shugnja doesn't matter, I would just prefer if she was capable of one of those.
Posting again soon,
Titania
