I will have to say that if she joins that we will not add any more players, because with her we would have 7 players, and that is all I am willing to attempt GMing. I've GMed a game with 6 PC's before so hopefully the 1 player won't make too much of a difference.
I am definately going to start writing up the adventure so hopefully I'll be able to account for everyones skills. strangely it is my favorite part of GMing.

Yeah, the Sea Dragon Clan is the result of a campaign we played in a couple of years ago. The Clan resulted from a group, a Dragon Bushi, Dragon Monk, a Crab Bushi, and a Dragon Shugenja, being very successful in negotiating many Clan political situations, defeating many powerful Shadowlands creatures, and even finding a cure for Taint which they sell cheaply, as well as something to do with the word Isawa.
After all of this the Empress asked us to name our reward. Due to some things that happened with the Mantis due to spiritual contamination discovered too late, the group asked to establish their own Great Clan by asking the Mantis to swear service to them. Due to other political maneuvering going on they also asked for a swath of land that put them between the Crane, Phoenix, Dragon, and Scorpion Clans, and took some land from the Lion on top of the Mantis Islands.
After several days of dealing with the uproar and thinking about it the Empress granted us our requests. Since we had done some HUGE favors for all of the clans except the Crane, most were reluctantly supportive of the groups ascension and honors given.
So since then the Clan has been building fast, mostly by breaking some very old conventions. First, they were willing to accept any and all Ronin interested in regaining their honor in the eyes of the Empire. Second the new Clan Shugenja did something disturbingly shocking. She travelled around Rokugan and adopted anyone who was not Samurai but able to talk to the Kami, irregardless of their social status. She literally found thousands by doing this.
When called to court to explain this "disgraceful" behaviour, Daimyo Songo Kaede let the Empress know why.
"The Kami told me about these people. To ignore the Kami is overly dangerous. Something we have found out performing our many services for the Empire. Plus it is good for the Empire to have as many Shugenja as possible, and this duty to the Empire has been ignored for far too long. So to perform my duty of service to the Empire and to keep the Kami happy, my only choice was to do what was required, irregardless of how my honor, and the honor of my family and Clan, would be perceived. I did, and do, have the blessings of our Clan Daimyo Senshi and the rest of our Clans Family Daimyo's. So now I ask for the blessings of the Empire and all of its Daimyo's."
Which she received. Many were reluctant, but once the Empress gave her blessing no one else dared to voice any more opposition, even though plenty occurs behind the silk. Especially from the Crane Clan and at least one Imperial family.
Most fear and/or hate the Sea Dragon because of their threat to the Empire. Which is a valid fear. Even though the the new Clan has performed with honor, others in the Empire realize that the clan is in a very strong position to over throw the Empress and start a new dynasty.
Despite the fact that they helped put the Empress on her throne, their honor may be overcome by temptation. So people around the Empire strive mightily to lessen the power of the newly founded clan, in order to maintain the Empire.
The Sea Dragon Clan actually understands this and see the wisdom of their fears. So they have actually helped to lessen their own power, behind the scene.
They also have all of their Samurai make oaths worded as to make it clear their service is first to the Empire, not to Clan or Family, and that they are also committed to keeping the Clan from giving into "temptation" and will never follow orders to act against the Empire, even if those orders come from their Clan and family Daimyo's.
Only if the Sea Dragon council (which comprises all Clan Family Daimyo's and is the true "leader" of the Clan, meaning Daimyo Senshi is much more of a "figurehead" leader than a true Clan Daimyo like the other clans have) makes such orders will Sea Dragon Clan Samurai follow them.
So much like the other Clans, the Sea Dragon Clan is committed to maintaining the current "government" form, but they do champion changes to certain social customs and trade practices with Gaijin.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Your Clan Daimyo is "very" familiar with the Sea Dragon Clan Daimyo's.

Okay, we start the game next thursday, so I would like all of you to post how your character would introduce themselves, and what you want your party members to know about you.

Can anyone please post me to character creation guide or maybe explain the process in detail here for 3E? I would GREATLY appreciate it. Like how to spend points and costs for everything, etc.
Thanks in advance!
okay... I usually start with the disadvantages so I know how many points a have to work with. So total CP = x + points from disadvantages. (x being the CP the GM gave you to work with right off.)
I then choose a family and school that my PC is going to belong to. ( remember all rigns start at 2) I then add these stat adjustments to my charcater.
For example:
Say I choose to be from the Tamori family(which gives me a +1 to Willpower, which belongs to the earth ring) the say i wnat to be a shugenja of the Tamori family ( this gives me +1 to any trait I want, for purposes of simpicity I choose stamina) so I now have a 3 earth becuase my willpower and stamina are both up to a three.
then I start using CP to up my rings, each ring take desired number x 3, CP to up. So say I have a 2 awareness and want to up it to a 3, I have to spend 9 CP to get it up to 3. The only exception to this rule is the void ring, which instead takes X x 4 CP to up.
after iu ahve upped all the stats/rings I want to, I look toward my skills.
these you will find in your starting package for your class. To up a skill you must spend CP = to the rank you wish to achieve in the skill.
so you start at rank 1 with your athletics. it will take you 2 points to up it to a rank 2. And if you want to up it to a rank 3 you must spend an additional 3 CP. So to get from rank 1 to rank3 in a skill, you must spend 5 points.
after you are satisfied with your skills (I sometimes do this in reverse order.) you can browse through the advantage section of the book and choose your advantages (if you have any CP left, or feel like interchanging a few CP from skills) and choose any that seem worth the point cost to you.
I then do equipment, which is described in your school package. The only thing you really have to choose is the contents of your traveling pack, or if there is anything you wish to buy with your koku. Just remember you have to count on your lord to get you your weapons and armor stuff, if you buy them yourself you may insult your lord by implying that he cannot provide for you.
hope that was a good enough explaination, ask for clarification as you wish.
Titania

That was fantastic and definitely rang a bell. I had a friend show me online a long time back when my Hida Crab Bushi was made and I was able to make toons. I haven't messed with rules since though and forgot how many points it costs to do things but last night I seemed to think it was x 3 for attributes and things except for skills. I think I was right!
Thank you so much! I think you are going to be a fantastic GM!

How about levels? When do you level up, etc?
I am going to start going over the rules again tonight and learning the R+K system again. I really would love to master the ruleset because this is a setting I would LOVE to roleplay in continuously.
Also, how many points do we get to build a character for this campaign? I am thinking of making a character for my GF tonight or tomorrow to submit.

She said 80 point builds. "Rank/Level" is determined by the insight points. There is a chart in the book you can find. She limits advantages and disadvantages to 15 points each. They must be within a couple of points of being equal to each other, most times. She has made a couple of exceptions in this game, notably the Ronin. Mine are almost as bad. Mine were like 15 in advantages and 12 in disadvantages, which left me with 77 points to build the rest.

I posted on the Alderac forum again about my character's ability to fight a samurai directly in the thread I've been discussing L5R in and that guy that asked why I was able to multi school for free posted the following:
"the 'cross-training' is indeed part of the Shinobi's description, but that doesn't mean they get multiple school's techniques for free (it might indeed be the justification you need to convince your GM to allow multiple schools). By the rules, you just get Shinobi techniques unless you're paying the 10 xp for Multi-schooling.
If you're building a shinobi, you probably don't want to be thinking about how well you stack up with other PC's bushi - you'll ideally never be in a face-to-face 'honest' fight. Your targets will be sleeping, bathing, or enjoying the gentle playing of a biwa in a geisha house when you strike..."
If you wish to say something there yourself you may do so at http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 34#p829034.
He doesn't seem to agree with our interpretation of the rule but it is our campaign and not his so who really cares I guess?

Just tell him that the GM was the one who told you to do it, so it is just a thing of campaign tastes I guess.

Besides I think its kind of stupid to describe them as attending two schools and then say they have to pay for the "advantage" to do it. I would say its like an advantage awarded in game, you get it. No points gained or lost.
Besides, playing a Shinobi has serious consequences if they are ever "revealed", death. Being revealed is as simple as being caught carrying an "assassins weapon". Combine that with being part of the Scorpion Clan its far more evidence than most will need, or even want.
Besides, since there are no "clear" rules clarifications the description is the only solid thing to go by. It says nothing about the character getting favors to attend two schools, they are selected and ordered to attend. So they can make up the "Two Schools" requirement if they wish, however the description makes it pretty clear your in because your Daimyo said so. Which makes sense to me.
If I was GM I could see having a player pay 10 CP's to play a Shinobi if the player simply wants to, however if I want a Shinobi in my game they would be doing it because I, the Daimyo, said so. So no CP cost. Besides, in the long term there is no big deal about 10 CP's, its only big at first and second rank, then becomes increasingly insignificant.

Just a few quick questions before I post my character info
How do our characters know each other? How well do we know each other?
Are there any personal connections between any of our characters? Any other info that may help determine how much/little about our characters to post?

most of your characters don't know eachother at all. The twpo Crabs will know eachother well, but as for the rest of you, except for the Sea Dragon and Scorpion (who have seen eachother at intelligence meetings between the scorpion and the sea dragon clan)
The Crab charcters have gone on missions together. The scorpion and Sea dragon have gone on intelligence gathering missions together, but the sea dragon was only to helkp as cover (The Sea dragon does not know he is a ninja, he only assumed that the ninja was visiting the normal scorpion contacts at all hours of the night.)
Other than that you guys don't know eachother, other than the Sea Dragon is a son of one of the family daimyo's ( Songo specifically).

A few things about the game:
I was reading through the Way of the Ninja sourcebook today from the D20 version of the game and noticed that the book makes a distinct difference between Shinobi and Ninja. It states "Ninja are those that work directly for the clan. Their lives are dedicated to the missions of the clan and they practice nothing else. The Shinobi are those of the clan who lead a double life. Though their skills in the shadow arts are lesser than their Ninja counterparts, they are none the less, capable agents of the clan. The Bonge are those who support the various agents of the clan. They have no training in the shadow arts."
So it seems Shinobi is indeed what you made my character to be but I am more interested specifically in being a Ninja. A Shinobi is able to masquerade the martial skills of a Samurai it says by "Shinobi-warriors are the protectors of the small villages where safe houses are located. They usually pose as Ashigaru or Doshin for the town, thus covering their martial skills. Samurai who belong to a Ninja clan are ALSO TAUGHT THESE SKILLS, THUS ENABLING THEM TO FIT THE SAMURAI SOCIETY AS WELL AS THAT OF THE NINJA CLAN. Thus it is correct that the Ninja would be trained in a Bushi school as well to cover the fact that he/she is indeed a Ninja.
There are many interesting Ninja and specific Shinobi schools in the book. Would it be possible for me to transform my character from a Shinobi to a Ninja and maybe utilize one of the specific Ninja schools for my Ninja school training from this sourcebook? The Shosuro, the Khoga, and the Ega interest me a lot.

Btw, my character would introduce himself with his name and the fact that he is a Scorpion Clan Bushi. The members of our group would notice just how supremely determined he is and capable. He is absolutely obsessive with achieving his clan's goals and missions.
Secretly, he is cunning, ruthless, cold, supremely determined to achieve his secret missions with utmost secretness and efficiency. He is observing the members of the group for secret reasons and acting pro-actively to insure their success.....as long as the Scorpion will that success.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A soft wind rustled through the grass as the light of dawn broke. Four men stood on a hill, their robes shifting in the early gusts.
Two older men faced two others, one very old (a servant) and one very young. The servant held a red umbrella over his young master as those two approached the others.
The young man was Lord Oda Nobunaga, a third son of a prominent branch of the powerful Nobunaga family. He was quite small and studious in demeanor, as one would expect from the artist that he was. His clothing was expensive silk, but had been put on carelessly. His queue was tied hastily, and the tips of his fingers were stained with ink. He looked younger than his twenty four years. But there was something about his piercing gaze, and the set of his unusually broad shoulders that hinted at danger. Both to himself and others. His nickname was Tora ("Tiger")
"What is this?" barked Lord Sido, one of the older men. "Where is Tano?"
"Tano is indisposed, at the moment", said Lord Nobunaga. "He asks to postpone your engagement until the evening"
"I'll bet he's indisposed", laughed Lord Kufu. "Two and a half jugs to himself alone!"
"Wait. Aren't you Tano's brother?", Sido asked. "The poet?". The way he said "poet" was the same as you or I might say "kitten strangler".
"Are you here to rhyme us into forgiving your foolish brother's intemperate words?" raged Lord Sido. "I care not about his drunken excuses. Will he defend his honour or is he a coward?"
At the word "coward", Nobunaga narrowed his eyes and reached to his waist. He seemed oblivious to the fact that both scabbards showed a thin white "peace ribbon" intertwining around the guard of each of his two swords.
Immediately the old servant intervened. "My Lord, your father was very insistent. No more fighting!"
"Better to feel my father's wrath than let this arrogant pig live another moment to spread his insults!" Nobunaga said.
At this, Sido drew his katana and charged at Nobunaga.
Finally remembering that his swords were held by the peace ribbons his father had ordered him to apply, Nobunaga instead pulled both scabbards in their entirety from his sash and whirled the still scabbarded blades around him in a cloud of deflection.
"Ha! Young pup. Take the cover from your brushes before you write!", smiled Lord Kufu from the sidelines.
Lord Sido smiled at his second's wit and thrust his katana at the young poet. Nobunaga calmly stepped to the side and forcefully jabbed the metal tip of his wakizashi scabbard into Sido's prodigious belly.
Sido let out a loud "Oooof!" and began to bend over from the pain of the blow. As he did so, Nobunaga's katana scabbard flashed out, almost too fast to be seen and crashed against Sido's exposed larynx in an upward slash.
Sido crashed to the ground, stunned and gasping feebly for air. All that could be heard from him was a soft gurgling as he tried and failed to drag enough air through his shattered larynx into his lungs to survive. The gurgling faded, and then no more sound came from Lord Sido
Nobunaga turned to Kufu with a cold glance, slipping both of his still scabbarded swords back into his sash, and spoke.
"chattering monkey
bamboo sticks drum
silent monkey"

In the third editon L5R book they make no distinction so there is no need for the change. Also I do not have the bookj you have and so, would not be able to determine what I would do accurately.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
