So do you think they will make a new version all updated for this book? I have been wondering if they will do the clan books for 3E. I mean how else are we to have Ninja schools to make them viable characters? In this cook there are VERY interesting Shinobi and Ninja schools with very cool techniques.

I hope they do. I have always thought that they needed to elaborate on ninja/shinobi, more and am actually glad to hear that they have a book out. I also totally agree that they need to do the clan books for this edition, they totally rocked in 3.0 and that is pretty difficult to do without getting caught up in all the numbers.
At least in third editon L5R we do have one class of shinobi fleshed out, if you want you could have him 'technically' be a ninja instead, but it will role-play more than roll-play.
Titania
PS How is the character for your Gf going? or has there been a change in plans?

Hiruma Oushi is bent and wizened, his face deep-set with both wrinkles and scars. Twin wisps of stringy white hair emanate from each nostril, convulsing down to dangle well below his chin like undulating cobwebs.
Truly the namesake of his Clan, this tired old crab is world-weary and battle-worn. The constant scowl he wears only deepens the furrows of his complexion. Tongue and wit, however, are both razor-edged as are the blades he keeps tucked in his sash. One might speculate, also, that the tetsubo in his bulb-knuckled and liver-spotted grasp serves as more than a walking stick.
He will be encountered with his clansman, his pale eyes leering out from the shade of his conical hat. A steady stream of mumbled curses and smacking gums will be half-heard as it tumbles over cracked lips.

As for 3E making no distinction between Shinobi and Ninja you will see if you read closely under the Scorpion schools section for Shosoru Shinobi that it specifically DOES make a distinction still, as in the D20 clan book. It states that Shinobi would despise being called Ninja and that Shinobi detest Ninja greatly, even though their training and techniques are similar.
Thus what 3E really does is cut out all the depth and great things from the Way of the Ninja book and melts it all down to one Shinobi school so far but still manages to mention the true distinction. This makes me think there may be hope that a new clan book will be released. I would actually think it very cool to simply translate the techniques over from the Way of the Ninja book into 3E. There really would not be much work to this at all and would be rather simple while simultaneously adding great depth/intrigue to these kinds of characters. Having Khoga and Ega Ninja running around would be very interesting indeed.
For instance if I was to choose the Ega school:
The Ega Ninja School
Requirements: None
Benefits: +1 Stamina
Honour: 1 and no boxes
Glory: 0 and no boxes
Skills
Shinobi, Acrobatics, Athletics, Nawanuke-jutsu, Disguise, Atemi-waza, Defence, plus any 3 Ninjutsu
Techniques
Rank 1: Nerve Strike
The ninja knows how to strike at his opponent and cause intense pain. The victim must make a Willpower roll at TN 15 to overcome the pain. A failed roll results in the target being at able to only defend himself in combat and has -10 to all his rolls for the users Rank in actions.
Rank 2: Venomous Touch
The ninja has learned how actually poison a target through touch alone; or rather he has learned where to strike a victim to cause the necessary ki imbalance to create such an effect. The ninja chooses the effect that he wishes and then rolls to hit the target using his hand to hand skill. If successful he then makes a contested Void vs. Stamina roll. The venomous touch effect cannot kill the target. A failed roll results in the target being stunned for all intensive purposes for users Rank X 5 actions, unable to do anything.
Rank 3: Strike at the Heart
The infamous ninja death touch. The ninja has learned how to strike to cause the targets heart to stop. The ninja must have hit his target with a successful hand to hand attack and then rolls a contested Void vs. Stamina roll. If successful the opponent will keel over dead, if not the target collapses to the ground with seizures, as he suffers from a minor heart attack, an effect that will automatically put the character down.
Outfit
(All to be considered to be of average quality) Ninja-to, 10 shuriken, 2 other weapons of choice, robes, 5 smoke grenades, travelling pack, 1 koku.
That is their entire starting stuff. The Way of the Ninja clan book also lists some katas and skills Ninja may take but overall, this starting package should be incredibly easy to convert to 3E if there was a desire to do so. the Ninja/Shinobi schools I think add a lot of depth.

Btw, in talking to my girlfriend she wanted to know if it would be ok for her to sit in on our first game to observe and then if she still wants to get in on the action I can make her an appropriate character afterward.
Is that ok?

Yeah she can sit in and then make a character if she likes the game 'flavor'. Where I am having you guys go leaves many of the clan possibilities open, so we won't have to worry about likelihood of 'such and such' clan being there.

The way the school techniques are written up it looks like it is a secondary school (like after you have reached rank 5 and want to do additional schools) that is the only way it would be balanced enough (maybe). Keep in mind that D20 and L5R have totally different ways of determining power levels. While this is an excellent adaptation, I feel it is too powerful for a starting school. Hopefully, we will be able to revisit this campaign or find enough players for a different game with these characters in it, so that the possibility of adapting such classes could be tested better. However, at this time, we do not have the appropiate time needed. I would love to do a completely shinobi/ninja game in the future, in which we tests these adaptations, but...
Just ask your GF, that, if she was going to play, which clan would she want to be. Feel free to mention the Sea Dragon clan to her as well, and, if she inquires about it, feel free to ask me any questions about their schools and stuff.

Well I tried re-writing it, but I decided to be lazy and just Copy/Paste here from my post way back on the second page. My character isn't a diplomat, so there wouldn't really be anything he keeps hidden about himself. Jaybirds character would would probably be the only one to know about the origins of his Tetsubo, but he is proud of his father and the heirloom left to him, so it wouldn't remain unknown for very long.
Quote:
Physical Description: A huge Bear of a man, Hida Tsuro has the appearance one would expect of a Crab Warrior. A tall, muscular man with rough, dark skin, a long unkempt mane of hair kept tied back away from his face and a short scruffy beard. His weapon of choice is a large Tetsubo, an item given to him on his 7th birthday after his father was killed defending the Kaiu Wall from an attack from the shadowlands.
Personality and outlook: Hida Tsuro is a quiet man, and unlike many of his Clansmen, is soft spoken and tries to keep his emotions in check. Even from a very young age, he knew his destiny was to be a Warrior, a Stalwart defender of the Empire from the evils that besiege it. He strives to be the consummate soldier, a master of all the arts of warfare, and to leave the petty squabbling of the court to the courtesans. He views his duty as a great honor, and for him, to die defending the empire as his father did would be the greatest glory that could be bestowed upon him. In social situations, he is stubborn and blunt in his mannerisms, refusing to back down from what he believes to be right. He has little patience for the formalities of the court, but will always do his best to keep his anger in check, although his true emotions are always apparent.

I am in the process of explaining the clans to her right now. She kind of likes the Scorpion clan (Go figure! ) but has not made a final decision. I agree with you on the D20 stuff so far. I just would really love to have Shinobi and Ninja schools like that and I was thinking eventually it may be easy and feasible to simply translate them into 3E rules/conditions.
I really hope we do find a way to make this a permanent campaign. I have been chomping at the bit to play in L5R. I went out and bought a lot of the materials for 3E, met with the devs at GenCon Indy (and spent a fortune), etc. As of yet I have been unable to play. If you do ANY campaigns in L5R and need a Ninja I will be there! I also would enjoy playing my Hida Crab Bushi so I will be quite dedicated.
We will be starting tomorrow night, right? Can I just verify the time and will we be playing over Skype or something different?
Thanks for everything Titania. I am very excited!

I'm definitely looking forward to playing a Shugenja for the first time. Plus with the character concepts you have all written up the role play should be excellent as well.
Too bad Slimy is missing out, hopefully he can make it next week. I'm confident he will love this game.

Good game Titania
I like the mix of murder mystery, costume drama, and Monty Pythonesque burglars Here is a character sheet I found that might be of interest. It is 3rd edition and it is form fillable (can type on it)
We are third edition, right?
P.S. Death to ninjas

Have they made any kind of a GM screen for 3E yet? I saw a GM screen advertised at a website but I bet it is for 2E and that there is no 3E one yet. Anyone know for sure?

I know it isn't out yet, and a release date has not been given.

I was checking out the "Finally Finished" forum over at conceptart.org, and thought you whacky bushi-lovers might like this thread:

ConceptArt is amazing. The quality of work there is at once inspiring as well as soul-crushing.

Good stuff Titania. "Literary genius" my f*n*y, that Aramis feller couldn't write his way out of a paper bag.
Although 2 hours work for 2 posts is about right! *sigh*
You had some nice humour in there and summarised the correct parts, and wrote out the juicy bits more fully.
I really like the idea of having the ex magistrate do the write-ups as a pillow book. Very clever. If you continue with the summaries (and you really must now ), you can also play around with different voices (if you want) like I did with the excerpts from newspapers and so on.
I think Nobunaga remembers his triumphant display of rhetoric vs. the Crane differently. . But the beheadings of the ninjas was just right.
P.S. Death to ninjas
