Sorry to barge in - is there any room in the TNI (Thursday Night Irregulars) for another player?

I can run just about anything although my faves are:
-C&C
-Shadowrun 3rd
-Earthdawn 2nd
-Savage Worlds
-HARP (using Midkemia as my gaming world)
-Fantasy HERO
-HarnMaster
-Warhammer FPP 2nd
-GURPS 4 (usually fantasy but also like Transhuman Space)
-Mekton Zeta
Heck the list goes on and on
Weeknight gaming is the best for me these days so the Thursday night time slot looks great.

Howdy, Natural Twenty.
The Thursday Night Irregulars are always open to new players giving it a try. That's why we set it up. Glad to have you
We are presently in the middle of an introduction to Warhammer 2nd ed. Searching for something called the Doomstones! Not sure if you (and Kayolan, the DM) want to step in mid adventure. It is an interesting system (and quite different to me, having come from D&D) and Kayolan is doing an excellent job.
After that, we will finish up a game we had to leave mid stream (called Gear Krieg, like a pulp adventures meets WWII). It is an interesting, espionage oriented game that my fellow players and I keep wrecking by going all Rambo on the poor DM. Good fun
So, those will probably take 4-6 weeks total from today. Most new games last 6-ish weeks, or whatever it takes to run a store bought module or equivalent.
After that, we might have Aramis DM whatever cockamamie game he dreams up (Booo ! ) or have Rhiannon lead us in a revisit to the mysterious orient of Legend of the Five Rings (Yay! ).
If you wanted to DM, I am sure others would be interested in some of the stuff you have listed. I am quite interested in Midkemia.
As for HARP etc. one thing we focus on in TNI is flavour changes rather than rule changes. This is primarily because often, no one but the DM owns the rules. So, in those situations the DM has 2 choices:
a) SIEGE everything from the new game to make it like C&C which is so easy it can be played without rules, essentially. However, this does require some prep work by the DM. This is generally the method I have followed (to mixed success )
or b) play by the original rules, but the DM has to act as the rulebook for all players, explaining what powers do, and how to build a character etc. This latter method requires less prep for the DM, but it can bog the game down in explanations, and in "build" intensive games this can lead to a pretty wide disparity between the characters power-wise. But given that each game is only short term, it is not too much of an issue
Of late, we have had a pretty full group for TNI, but membership does tend to wax and wane over the years (this is our 2nd year). May our large group continue!
Oh, BTW- we use the development version of Maptool for our game table. It is excellent. And we use Skype for voice/OOC communication, with more mixed results

HARP is doable, and so would Rolemaster, for that matter, because Greg and I both likely have the "Quickstart PDF" which would allow us to easily share the basic rules with everyone. I have it, at least. Everything else I have for HARP I only have in print, so I would only be able to share scans for anything needed out of that.
Same goes for GURPS, at least 4E, they have a free quickstart rules booklet too.
So GURPS 4E, Rolemaster, and HARP all have quickstart type PDF's, and the GURPS one is free. I believe they actually charge $5.00 or so for the HARP and Rolemaster versions. Since Greg or I have those it would be simple for us to share the rules basics, with the understanding that all copies will be deleted/destroyed within 60 seconds of the completion of the game.

I think this kind of thing works better if players are playing front line fighters. If a player (like, say, me) prefers a more skill intensive, or magic powers using character, the Quick Start rules can be less helpful.
For example, didn't the Shadowrun quickstart lack spell descriptions? As I recall, there was a fair amount of stuff from other books we needed to use. Can't recall. It was still fun being a kick butt street wizard half orc though!
But yeah, it's doable. My view on HARP and Savage Worlds etc. (based mostly off of my blissful ignorance of the contents of these systems) is they are rules variations for standard fantasy (among other things) rather than flavours in themselves.
C&C does standard fantasy so well, so smoothly, so simply, that there needs to be a pretty compelling reason to try to wrap the old noodle around a different system, if we are just playing a standard fantasy adventure flavour-wise
For example, I think Earthdawn is quite different flavour wise, so a different system is required to get the feel right (I have never played it, although it sounds really cool: Call of Cthulhu meets D&D). Similarly, playing in Kayolan's Warhammer game has shown me that to play the Warhammer modules properly, flavour wise, you would have to keep the Warhammer system, because the D&D system is too "magic turned up to 11" to make gritty Warhammer plausible
Having said that, I think a jaunt through Midkemia (I have read the books and own some of the supplements) would be quite fun regardless of the system.

Just a follow-up. I've run games using MapTools, ScreenMonkey, FG II (d20, C&C, and Savage Worlds rules-sets) for the last 5 years or so. I'm a frequent Skype user ( naturaltwenty ) and am very comfortable gaming using voice chat.
At this point I'd like to play moreso than run, at least for a bit.
Some more detail on the games I listed and I totally understand the SIEGE-ifying of stuff.
Savage Worlds' quickstart -
http://www.peginc.com/Downloads/SWEX/TD06.pdf and if I ran this I'd probably do either Solomon Kane, Pirates of the Spanish Main (which are premade campaigns) or I'd do a BPRD/The Dresden Files-ish adventure I've been mulling about. You will find that the rules really enhance the flavor of any game using SW. It's tagline - Fast, Furious and Fun - make the game. While I am using it for my fantasy line (Realms of Eldrath - see sample character below) it supports a wide variety of genre's.
HARP's free 96 page quickstart (kind of an oxymoron there:) ) is available here -
http://www.harphq.com/free_downloads/3000L_HarpLite.pdf - this one I'm not real sure that the rules enforce a specific flavor vs. being a concise percentile based system. While definitely a different game than C&C it allows for a more defined character that can be tweaked. That being said character creation is best done on a spreadsheet (yes there's one already made on the HARP website) which can scare the be-jezus out of some.
GURPS 4e - I've never run it before but I'd like to muddle my way through it I've got no idea what I'd run for this one but I'd try to stick to things you could make through the quickstart available here -
http://www.naturaltwenty.com/downloads/ ... te_4th.pdf
One of the games I didn't list but have all of the stuff for as well is Hunter: The Vigil - quickstart available here -
http://download.white-wolf.com/download ... le_id=1051 I've dabbled in the oWoD in the past but I really liked this line of products. I'd really enjoy running this.

There has been noise by several board members to try out Hunter. I didn't know about the freebie.

So I know I've been throwing out games but I'm a little confused on the schedule of what's being played now and if I can jump in.
Date: Obviously Thursdays (duh)
Time: Got it
Tool Set: MapTools and Skype (I've got the latest versions of both)
Game: Warhammer (I think)
I can make a WH character and post by this afternoon (using core rulebook or just about any other book - I've got the whole line)
Just let me know -

Well, the way we roll is: Generally, this thread lists games played, and future games (in message 1)
As we progress through the list of future games, each new DM starts a new thread for their game, hopefully with some mention of Thursday Irregulars in the thread title
In this case the schedule is a bit wonky because we stopped a game near completion (Gear Krieg) and are now in the middle of Kayolan's Warhammer.
We will be finishing up Kayolan's game, then finishing Gear Krieg, then starting an entirely new game from scratch
It's up to you if you want to start half way through or wait for a fresh game.
I would bet that starting halfway through would be fine with both of those DMs (Kayolan and jarredmcgee)
The best idea is post a quick message in Kayolan's Warhammer thread
http://www.freeyabb.com/phpbb/viewtopic ... llordgames
Maybe start the message like this: I hear this party is sorely in need of a proper wizard, as the present wizard does not know what the heck he is doing (i.e. me). Actually, we have wizards and fighters pretty well covered. Not sure what the other options are, but play what you want regardless.
Here is the Gear Krieg thread that will eventually be resurrected (if it makes its system shock roll, that is)
http://www.freeyabb.com/phpbb/viewtopic ... llordgames
Generally, when these games finish, I ask that the DMs add "Finished" to the end of the thread title, so people know those games are closed
Two notes about the way we play
1) we tend towards a rules light, have fun don't worry approach. Partly, this is limited access to rules, but partly, it is that we are all C&Cers and that's how C&Cers do it
Although we make up for our lack of rules emphasis with a strong emphasis on solving all problems with obscene amounts of violence. So we have that going for us
This is epitomised in the first ever adventure of the Thursday Night Irregulars, serialised for your amusement
http://www.freeyabb.com/phpbb/viewtopic ... llordgames
2) What we lack in rules stickler-ness, we try to make up for with regular attendance. We do try to play pretty regularly (even though we are irregulars)
Hope to see you Thursday

Oh - the play style suits me just fine (as does the length of game sessions). I'll post to the WH thread post haste! As for character, I'm all about the beauty of random character generation for WFRP. Who knows what I'll end up with.

OK guys I have somthing a little different to offer if anyone is interested. Im working on Transplanting a couple of board games into map tools as an exercise in making macros and maptools map creation in general.
So far I have made one map for Doom: The Boardgame, although maptool doesn't have a card mechanic so I would have to play the invader and use the cards from the game but other than that I have made the game in maptool.
Next I will be working on Tannhauser or Last Night On Earth, although the card limitation would make me have to run the zombies for LNoE, but Tannhauser is Card free.
Anyways I'm just throwing this out here for you all, maybe if we're missing some people or have a gap in between games we can try one of these as a change of pace.

What are we playing tomorrow night? My computer at home is dead, and my laptop has 'issues' starting older versions of maptool. I can launch maptool from the web start, but the downloaded version doesnt work on my laptop.
anyways I should have my home computer up and running before the session next week, depending on how long it takes me to get my replacement Motherboard in.

Looks like we have a healthy dose of new games being suggested.
In future we have planned:
Rhiannon L5R (Yeah!)
followed by
Aramis Mystery Game (boo!)
After that, potential games are:
Josh-Continuation of Warhammer?
Treebore- Traveller or perhaps Twilight 2013 now, Treebore?
Jarred- tightening belt
Andre- some wild board game

Sorry Silva, we must have all missed your post when It came up.
I don't see there being any issue with you signing up and coming into our next game, although we picked up a few new players with the Warhammer game, so space might be a little tight.
Speaking of the next game, do we know what we are playing next?
Also I was thinking a reboot of this thread might be in order, The TNI is over a year old(almost a year and a half iirc), this thread is a little bulky, and the scheduling post is out of date, maybe a new clean new thread would help us keep this beast organized, with the current roster of players, scheduled games and a list of possible upcoming games.

Well, I was supposed to run after Josh (i.e now), but we got the chance for some L5R so we took that instead.
So next up will be me (unless I can get someone else to step into my place again ).
As for content, well, that is a bit of a mystery. I was originally intending to do a totally different game/module than this, but I have now switched over to this. I can't give too much away, but suffice it to say it has been nearly 2 years in the making come this October (actually not really as I am just now starting to write it )
Aiming for probably a July 2 start (although with Canada Day and July 4th in there, might be a week later if people can't make it). Probably last a good while (maybe until school starts in September?). These things always take longer than I plan.
(Now, if people are taking long summer trips in that time frame, then maybe we would hold off until September. Hopefully everyone will be around)

The scheduling above looked good to me, it ended on Kayolan's warhammer, which was our last game (Jay's Gear Krieg ended out of sequence). I have added some more possibles to the list however.
We could go for a new thread but some of the longer lasting game threads here are 60 or even 80 pages long. We have a ways to go yet.

My people have been in communication with Jaybird's people (I think he is presently represented by Creative Artists) and they drove a hard bargain. Two sticking points were that everyone in our group would have to grow a beard and handlebar moustache for the duration of the revisit (which Titania might have some trouble with...as would I ) and that the game no longer be called "Dead Mule part 2" but be changed to Jaybird and the TNI All stars in Dead Mule 2: Electric Boogaloo
The negotiations had reached a tipping point when I received a cryptic email, bearing only this mysterious symbol:
(Actually Jaybird should be available for a July-Sept revisit, so that is why we are aiming for those dates)

The game is supposed to be L5R which is set in a mystical, magical orient, where ninjas and samurai duel ogre-magi and kenku.
Rhiannon is in charge. Maybe she would let you play my 71 year old servant who carries me to my various honour duels
The game we are talking about above is a revisit of our Western themed game from a few winters ago, which will begin later in the summer (if Jaybird is granted guest star billing, his own trailer, and points on the back end as well as licensing rights to all Buffalo Johnson plush toys, dinnerware and ancillary video gaming rights )

Kurt speaks the truth. My crazy schedule will be wrapping up in about 3 weeks, which will (Lonesome) dovetail nicely with the return to Dead Mule. Rhiannon, sorry that I wasn't able to bring Hiruma out of the wings for L5R. Next time! I do appreciate the invitation, though.
Early July will also mark my return to Nate's Sunday game. Hopefully you guys won't get too far ahead of me in XP.

Howdy Jay
The problem with doing a one nighter with a game totally new to most of us is we would probably spend the first half getting the basic rules straight/character creation and comprehension, and the second half would be spent asking all those questions we did not know we needed in the first half, before we started to play*.
One nighters are probably best with very simple games (i.e ones without elaborate magic or tech, and a SIEGE type approach to skills and feats), or ones everyone has played (like C&C)
*- actually, we would spend the first third with mic problems and computer/server problems, but you get my drift
