Sessions Summary
Captain Rex hired on a fantastic crew. He hired Titania, and unbelievably skilled Trader and incredible Pilot, she is even better than he is!
He hired "Halo", a Human Naval person that came incredibly armed and armored as well as being a fully licensed Doctor.
He hired a hardcore Ex MArine Named Jayhawk, with excellent weapons and armor training, as well as fantasitic equipment.
All rounded out with his trusted XO, with whom he did his 20 years of service with in the Vargyr Empire, Andre.
After taking on a "sensitive" mission from the Duke they Jumped, with the greatest of ease from Mongo in Jewell Sector to Clan in the Riverland Sector.
Andre, being the wily old Pirate that he used to be, performed detailed deep scans. His wiliness was immediately rewarded by detecting a Corsair hiding nearby behind an asteroid with its maneuver drives powered down.
Captain Rex quickly decided to attack! Andre quickly got a great weapons lock and Titania deftly maneuvered into a great high position. Rex manned his own forward turrets and opened fire, scoring an immediate critical hit on the Corsairs aft guns, destroying them! He told Andre to maintain the weapons lock and ordered Titania to get him in position to fire on the forward turrets.
Titania remembered to maneuver to avoid the return fire, and did so rather easily. She then maneuvered to give her Captain a clear shot at the enemy Corsairs forward gun battery.
Rex saw that he had a good shot, carefully targeted the forward guns and fired! Precise hit!! The forward guns were gone!
Rex did a broadband broadcast telling the enemy Corsair to surrender, or die! The Corsair naturally ran for it!
Rex declared over internal communications his intent to target the maneuver drive.
Andre drew a sensor lock on the maneuver engines.
Titania maneuvered and closed to give her Captain as good a shot as she could.
Rex pulled on all of his knowledge and experience to carefully target the maneuver drive! The rich bounty such a ship would bring threatening to break his concentration!
He fired with the coolness only skill and experience can bring.
A direct hit!
The engines lost all power immediately.
Time to board!
He ordered Halo and Jayhawk to suit up and prepare to board!
Titania and Andre worked in perfect tandom to bring the ships alongside each other like some great ballet dance in black space.
Halo and Andre attached and opened the boarding tube. They easily opened the Corsairs hull hatchway and entered the ship.
The Vargyr aboard the enemy Corsair were all ready to fire a massive barrage from their laser rifles and pistols. As soon as they saw the two beings in full Battle Dress they quickly realized that victory was impossible and surrendered!
The ship was theirs!
Creds danced before Rex's eyes as he assessed the likely bounty of of the Corsair.
He sent his best engineer, Titania, over to see about repairing the maneuver drive. 90 minutes later she had the drives back on line. Lucky day!
Then they took a look at the weapons turrets. It was quickly obvious repairs were impossible, they were almost completely gone!
So now they have to decide whether to go back to Mongo, or continue on to their original destination, the planet Clan.
Titania and others scrutinized the Comm records of the Corsair and found communications with someone planet side, or at the Spaceport.
So continuing on to the planets spaceport could open them to attack, depending on the security and integrity of the Spaceport.
The captured Corsair was ready to Jump, being fully fueled and able to maneuver. However his ship had just jumped and needed to refuel.
So should they scan the planets of the system and see if there are any fuel supply points around? Or will they have to go to the Spaceport and run the risks until they are refueled and drop off their 3 Million Credit cargo?
Hmmm... Decisions, decisions!

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

That was an interesting first session. The ship combat was kind of like Star Trek with everyone coordinating their actions. I.e without Scotty lining them up or Fido getting a fix on their location, Rex could not shoot them
Given that, one idea I had is to have more PCs have gunnery skills (Jay and Patrick specifically). That way, if we can get a third turret, we will have each PC having a task to roll during combat
Another idea: Maybe we should treat my ship as a party asset. That would enable us to use the $$$ from captured ships to upgrade to bigger and better ships with fancy new gear. So we would trade our now 2 ships for 1 bigger ship with three gun turrets. Then, if we get more $$$, we get a bigger engine, or plasma weapons, or whatever.
Not sure how much of our time will be spent in ship to ship things, but that might be a good way to spread the fun. We don't want too much spotlight to fall on the King of Dogs, no matter how much he deserves such attention
Anyway, good fun. Next week: planetfall?
Arf Arf!

Yeah, skill based games, especially one where such a wide range of skills can come in handy, definitely can "compartmentalize" the play. Everyone who can be involved in ship to ship combat has things to do. Those who don't, don't have anything to do. Those with "boarding party" skills get to do the combat in the boarding action, the ship crew sits back and watches and waits.
Of course, if your a boarding party with super tank armor Battle Dress TL 13 and TL 15, well, only idiots would fight them. So a quick surrender instead.
As for splitting the creds. The crew realizes you have HUGE expenses to pay. Just fueling alone is 66,850 creds to Jump each way (good thing you didn't take that food stuffs cargo!), Paying the crew just standard pay isn't cheap either. Then their is just general ships maintenance is expensive.
If your ship had been the one who lost its guns, but managed to escape, would cost you FOUR MILLION credits to replace the guns, since they were totally destroyed.
So the players should understand this, and have no problem with you getting the lions share of the credits since you have far bigger expenses.
Realize you have no "Emergency Fund". IF you had lost this battle, but escaped, you would have had to mortgage your ship again to afford the repairs.
So it is fair for you to get as much of the credits as you need to ensure your ability to stay in business, and keep your crew employed.
Like the bounty on this Corsair, if you successfully get it back to Mongo, you are perfectly in your rights to take all of it if you wish. However, you would be right to at least share some of it with your crew, but not too much or you may lose them to retirement in the lap of luxury.
So keeping 80% of the bounty for "insurance" against further Pirate damage, colliding with crazy asteroids, etc...
BTW, bounty is 40%, and with the newer Corsair you could bounty it and get about 40 Million cred. Or you could repair and replace the damage done, make it your new ship, and sell your old bucket.
Which, BTW, you could sell for 60% of its original market value. Which would be about 83 Million Cred.
You know your not "in the clear" until you have enough assets to buy a brand new ship in case you lose the one you have. This will put you a lot closer to being "in the clear".
83 million for the old bucket, minus 4.5 million to repair the much newer Corsair, puts you at 78.5 million credits towards being in the clear. Now how much should your crew get out of that? Now be fair to your character. Who has the responsibility of the 135 million credit vessel? You do. Who's ship and gunnery skill made it possible for you to trash and capture the Vargyr ship? Who hired the crew that enabled you to so ably maneuver and handily attack the ship? You did.
So yes, it is wise to give your crew bonuses. But giving them close to an equal share is not smart, nor expected. Buying them better equipment, or just giving them a nice "bonus" is all you have to do.
If you want to make them partners, then offer them bonus' as shares of ownership. Divide your ownership up into a 134 shares worth 1 million creds each. Offer them this. 100,000 cred bonus' each, or give them a collective share of ownership equal to one share, cash value of 1 million creds. This, in effect, increases their bonus to 250,000 creds each. However they will also be responsible for paying 1/134 of all costs in operating the ship. However, they get 1/134 share of all profits. Which they can either cash out or turn around and put towards buying more shares. Which, if they already owned such a share, would net them 622,000 creds for what the capture of this Corsair will allow you to do. They would get an additional 22,238 creds from the cargo, etc...
Thats how to "realistically" share the loot. Have the crew buy into what you already earned as the business goes along. Then it will become "fair" to you and them.

I had no problem standing by in the staging area while the swabs did their magic up on the bridge. Things will pick up for Patrick and I when we get down dirtside - so it's a fair trade.
Regarding ship skills, I believe the only even halfway helpful one I have is Mec 2. But I don't know if that even helps on a starship or if it's just for tanks and ATV's or whatever.
My vote, not that it counts for much, is that we scoop and jump back to Ruby. There's already been one pirate out here, and we know he has friends. Who's to say there won't be more? Our new bounty is pretty much a sitting duck, so let's get it out of here.

Sounds good... unless.. do we know anything about the goods produced in the system/planet to which we are headed? If there is anything worth while we could always continue on to where we're headed, unload our goods, use the money to fix up our new ship and pick up 2 boats full of goods and jump back to Ruby, unload the goods and then collect our bounty..
Its risky I know, It involves running a crippled ship though pirated space, then splitting our (already slim) crew amongst 2 ships, and running back though the pirate space. But you don't make it though the Vargyr Navy with your tail between your legs!

In the spirit of the media's annoying contraction of celebrity names (TomKat, Brangellina, Billary, etc.) the ship's boarding party of Jayhawk and Halo should hereby be referred to as J-lo.
We'll be adding a little extra trunk space to our battle dress.

OK, time to see if your Captain is an Alpha Pack leader or an Omega!
Or, does he have balls? Or is he neutered?

Have a look at those cold, murderous eyes.
Just point me at those cat merchants or maybe some of those squirrel marines. Let me at 'em

Hey guys,
Martin J. Dougherty, the guy behind the Traveller 1248 books, and the writer of the Spinward Marches setting book for Mongoose Traveller, was recently interviewed HERE, for those who might care.
Dougherty has worked on pretty much every edition of Traveller since GDW folded, and he's a friend of Traveller creator Marc W. Miller. Thought this crowd might find the interview as interesting as I did.
Cheers,
TheNewGuy

Cool! I am not personally "jazzed" because my Traveller is one thing I have been very happy with ever since I started doing it "my way" 15 years ago. I am even more "jazzed" over my adapting it to C&C, which has been shockingly easy. I still need to convert the starship building and planet building charts though. I will probably look into my T20 book for that.
Anyways, I am glad to see Traveller has so much going for it and I hope it draws a lot of new fans into its awesome universe.

How did it go? Is the Spinward March our squeaky toy?
It began with a cutlass duel and ended with the preliminaries of a laser weapons shootout to rival Han Solo's worst day.
A certain dog pirate duelled the captain of the captured vessel for the right to lead the pack. Fortunately for us, the King of Dogs was victorious. Needless to say, there was much celebration and sniffing of rear ends all round
Investigation of the mysterious signal sent by the captured vessel just prior to their dastardly attack revealed that a Senator on the surface was fomenting piracy for his own nefarious ends.
The captain tucked away that tidbit for future use (if we ever need a senator's aid)
We entered the starport wreathed in glory as "pirate smashers". Their adoration of our good selves were only enhanced when "Scotty" announced that we had brought vital medical supplies. We decided Scotty should try to get a good price, but be willing to very noticeably compromise, creating goodwill for any future trades.
Scotty managed to achieve a price higher than our asking price while still giving the impoverished residents a discount, achieving both our charitable and avaricious aims at once
Such was our reputation at the time that a coalition of leaders tasked us with retrieving some vital equiptment from a derelict (and probably haunted ) space station.
On arrival at the space station, we ascertained that it had probably fallen to piratical malice (or as we Vargyr like to refer to it, canine capitalism)
Further investigation revealed that there were still crew members from the space station, injured, and held in stasis in low berths.
Jayhawk and Halo were just entering the room of the crew members, one of whom was just groggily rising from his capsule, when a communique came from our ship.
"All hands! All hands!. We've got company in the docking bay. And they don't look friendly"
Damnable pirates!
Time to earn your pay Jayhawk, Halo and (spak-man). Scotty and I want to see those battle suits in action.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Proposed crew lists for our burgeoning fleet:
Original Corsair with new computer: Pilot : Rex Nav/Muscle: Halo other: Vargyr crew/human astrophysicists
New Corsair: Pilot : Scotty Nav/Muscle: Jayhawk other: Human crew
New ship with jump drive: Pilot : Vargyr pilot? Nav/Muscle: Fenris?? Other: Vargyr/human crew
Does that look good to everyone? Remember, we're all partners now . Or would we better to sell one ship and just have two? If we want to take on Jameson we may want to have as many as we can get.
I would like to figure out a way to ambush his fleet in pieces rather than take them all on in a frontal assault.
Together, we can rule the galaxy!
(I just realised Treebore, if we are putting the new computer in the corsair, we can sell the old computer for a few megacredits)

You got 3 million credits for the old computers. Which meant to fill your cargo holds for both ships only cost 1.2 MCred.
When you sell on Clan (we just went ahead and did the rolls tonight) the cargo will sell for a stunning (absolutely maximum possible) 269,280,000 creds, with Titania/Scotty's share being 67,320,000 credits (50% share of second ship). She also wants to clarify here she will handle crew and fuel costs by herself for the her Corsair, she will only hold you to 50% of any major repairs.
BTW, these rolls, and the fact you were going from a TL 15 world to an world effectively TL 8, gave her a 45 to 1 return on the cargo she bought for you. She got the maximum possible results on the cargo with the factors used.
Also, Titania made me realize I incorrectly stated skill rank maximums. That was for Traveller and its 2d6 system. Under d20 the maximum skill rank is 15.
Now we will see how much of a discount she can get you on the Jump Drive and weapons turrets.
Oh, names heard tonight:
Pirate Admiral Jameson
Scientists Spock, Kirk, and McCoy
Engineer Bob Tesla (Eng of the SDB you captured tonight)

Just remember, oh fearless leader, that Jayhawk is useless on the bridge of a starship. Zero pertinent skills.
Yes, I was thinking that when I wrote the above message. I don't know enough about all of your characters.
Another issue is, I assume skill wise, we are all above the abilities of our NPC crew mates. By dividing out the PCs, we are essentially making each of our ships equivalent to NPC ships, losing our advantage.
Here is an alternative idea, we sell all 4 ships (mine, scotty's, new corsair, new ships boat) and buy one really awesome one, heretofore known as the "Hair of the Dog"
That way we keep all of our PCs together, we still need some NPCs for the bigger ship, and we kick butt.
If we are sticking with the multiple ships method, I vote we spend some of our money on Star Trek type shields for the various ships (do they have those Treebore?), and maybe some improved weapons
It might also be a good idea if we upgrade all PCs to iron man suits like Patrick has. And make sure all NPCs have at least a Vacc suit.
The rest of our money would remain banked, to be used for a) further trading and b) the inevitable repairs to our ship(s) from the foolhardy decisions of our fearless leader
Also, I vote our armour and ships bear the following emblem
Together we can rule the galaxy!
Rex

Treebore-
I forgot to ask. Re: star siege. Are we doing a playtest of that game? I was unclear what you meant at the end there? (We seem to put all of our important discussions and decisions in the last 3 minutes of these sessions )
If so, did you mean you will be finishing this Traveller game with Star siege? Or you would be running a star siege module after wrapping up traveller? Does the game come with a module?
Either way is fine with me, and I will be happy to playtest it and give my (no doubt impeccably reasoned) comments.
I just want to be clear for our timing for Spak Man's "Whoops, Apocalypse" and then Aramis' "Paranoia-They Really Are Out to Get You!"

I'll have to see the Star SIEGE document before I know what I can do with it.

For the remainder of my Traveller game, and preferable for good, I want to turn off "push to talk". I need to hear your "verbal cues". IE chuckles, laughs, groans, etc... I realized last night that I knew Titania and Halo were having a good time, but with the "dead silence" of Ventrilo I had no real idea if you guys were getting into it. I can see their smiles and hear their laughter, but I only get dead silence from Vent.
So turn off push to talk, I want to hear the noise. Cue Quiet Riot.

It's also a problem for those who have dropped. They just assume a bit of quiet is normal.
I agree, I am often laughing or saying "oh no!" etc. with the button off.
However, I have used Ventrillo with push-to-talk turned off. It does have a downside. It reacts to a noise at your end to initiate the mic (so laughing would get through). But, it often cuts off the first bit of all statements because it has not yet realised it is hearing speech rather than a cough or whatnot.
I thing we should definitely try it though. It is odd for a DM to be speaking into a big wall of silence

You can adjust the sensitivity and delay time down to half a second, so it shouldn't be that bad, although I have never tried it myself, no harm in trying though
