Play by Chat - The Zalmaria Campaign

Post by Combat_Kyle »

It is forth year of the reign of Empress Nicolette Varos, guardian of Zalmaria, the Island Empire of the United Peoples.

Almost 600 years ago Humans, dwarves, halflings, gnomes, halfling, high and wild elf escaped the continent of Blakkar, thier old home. The land had been laid to waste by the wars between man and dwarf, followed by their near destruction by Varithan the Vile. The survivors of this struggle fled to a far away Island filled with promise, bounty and hope. The races united and tamed the land of its many foul beasts and built the beginings of a great Island Empire. Their first Emperor selected by a council representing all races - Clan-Chief Talonstrike wild elf and hero forged the Island nation with sweat and blood. Great cities and roads were built during his 500 year reign and peace was known to all. His death was mourned by the united peoples and the Great Dwarf Zimm Fireforge was selected to become the new emperor. The Island nation continued its prosperity under Emperor Zimm until descendants of Varithan the Vile, landed on the peaceful island with legions of Orcs, Goblins and Kobolds. Once again the united peoples faced death and doom from the savage ones. Emperor Zimm fought a long and hard war, leading his armies through the mountains in the north, scattering the legions of evil and destroying their leader. Emperor Zimm was killed in the conflict and Zalamaria faces an era of rebuilding and rebirth under the Human Emperor Nicolette Varos. The northlands have nearly recovered from the war but a new threat looms in the newly renamed Zimm Mountains, survivors of the invading force hide in the caves of the mountains gaining power and plotting their revenge...There are also rumors of a death cult of the vile god Begnus operating in the swamps near Kingsvale...

Our heroes find themselves in the mining village of Ridgevale, on the southern edge of the Zimm mountains. Unknown to them and the residents of Ridgevale, a great evil is about to awake....

So begins the introduction to Zalamaria and the Veil of Darkness in the northlands.

Well we can keep the same time and play on Friday (I have class of Tues, Thurs). If everyone is ok with this? Skathros from DF may be joining us, if Megamanfan, Skathros, Treebore, and Vestinious are ok, other wise we will have to wait till Sunday August 6th to start playing. Which is fine with me because that give me more to to plan your horrible deaths.

Has a regular time and day been decided for this game yet? Sunday or Friday?

Also, it looks like the party could use a wizard or illusionist. I'd be happy to play one if I can fit the game into my schedule. The game is meant to run once every two weeks, right?

Well I think this concept of getting a couple of weekday sessions in before GenCon is out of the question. So What I think we will do is schedule the first session for Sunday August 6th at 2PM US Eastern Time. I would schedule it for later, but Vestinious is on the other side of the pond and I don;t want to schedule at time that is too late for him. Anyway please tell me if this time works, if so the second session will be played August 20th, and continue with a bi-weekly schedule. Once we get the scheduling time finialized things should run along perfectly. And yes the party could use a Wizard. The plus side of waiting till August 6th is that it gives you all more time to work on your characters if you wish. And it gives me more time to work you characters into the plot.

Given that I'm on the same side of the pond as Vestinious, I also would have a problem with a game starting too much later than 2 pm EST. Sunday evening (7 pm GMT) should be good, so I will try join the first session.

What chat programme will be used? Are you going for the dragonsfoot option, or something else?

As I understand you are a Mac user and are unable to run mIRC, if that is the case I will probably run it over at DF. But you may want to check out the link to mIRC uk to see if you might be able to run it. ANyway if you do decide to play I would be thrilled to have you. If so, roll up your charcter and you might want to check out the campaign world before making your charatcer, but at the least check out my houserules. The link to my site is in my signature.

Mac users can use other IRC programs though - there are dozens to choose from. And they can all connect to the proper server (Magicstar), so mIRC isn't needed.

You can use any Mac compatible IRC program. I used to use IRCle a few years back and it worked great.

Afterwards, if the program you use doesn't have a link to teh MagicStar server, you simply need to connect to irc.magicstar.net:6667

Do you have any recommendations, Meepo?

Thanks.

IRCle is considered the "Mac mIRC" and isn't too tricky to use. I used to use it several years ago and never had any problems with dicebots.

Sunday afternoon play

Kyle,

How long do you expect each session to last? I have to leave the house at 5:30 on Sunday.

If I can work it in, I would be interested in joining in.

Well I was thinking that play will last 3-4 hours max. If you are serious about playing, I will take you, if Skathros plays that puts us at 7, which is the size of my weekly gaming group, so I am used to running that number. So if anyone else is interested I will put you on a waiting list. grrrowler39 chek out the website in my signature, make a character and send it to me if you want to play. The more the merrier.

I've got the first 4 character sheets in (Meepo, Treebore, Megamanfan, Vestinious) and their backgrounds are nice and juicy . I am writing more detail about the history, the gods, the government and such. They should be done before the 2nd gaming session. I would have them done sooner, but I have to finish my 20 page paper on the Anglo-Zulu War by next week (damn real-world). The biggest news is that I have commissioned my GF (an art major) to do a nice ink/watercolor world map. She should have it done by the 2nd session as well. If you have any question about the game or campaign world let me know. Also of the others interested in playing (Arkasia, grrowler) let me know and send me a character sheet soon . Looking forward to this.

Anglo-zulu war? Do you mean the English-Zulu wars? Late 1800's to early 1900's? Cecil Rhodes?
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Ango-Zulu of 1879, and I am specifically looking at the regiments of native Sout Africans (Khoi, Griquas) and thier role in the war. I didn't want to bore people with my independent research project.

My main deal is Cecil Rhodes. He's right up there with Stalin and hitler in my book.

I am in total agreement with you on that, he used missionaries to soften up the locals, then the army to crush them. A cold hearted man, evil indeed.

There have been some updates to my website. There is an area map of Ridgevale to wet your appetites till Sunday. Sorry my city maps are either clunky (the computer one) or ameturish (the hand drawn), they do get the job done. Also I have decided to try a new concept, since my tabletop game takes place in the same world, both groups (online, and tabletop) will exist in the same timeline. So things that one group does could potentially affect the other. I plan on building a very detailed world through your adventures and my home games adventures. There is a link to the Campaign Journal for my home group if you are interested in the style of game you will be playing on Sunday. I'll keep everyone posted.
