Troll Lord Games

This is going to be a good fiscal year for TLG if they can get this out before GenCon. It sounds like it will be. I am probably more geeked about the Airhde books, but only by a smidge. It it all adds up to my being broke in the end!

This book is on target for release at Troll Con VIII.

The log jam right now is in chapter 2 with the race sections. I've been struggling to balance the text on hand given over by Casey and Davis with the desires and designs of Mac Golden (these two are often at odds) and with my own pointed approach of game-table practicality...rules break down, concepts don't carry over etc etc I've written a good chunk of this as well and need to marry it all up. Once this is done I can move on to the more complete Chapter 4-18 for editing and clean up.

Progress is slow but work is good.

By the look of the twitter updates, Steve is kicking ass and taking names on the CKG. With the M&T of Airhde done and ready to ship, Fields of Battle around the corner, and now the CKG due out by Troll Con, it appears that Steve is a man on a mission.

Looks like a great year for TLG.

Into the Ozarks until Monday? Did I read that tweet right? Steve sure is hell-bent on getting the CKG wrapped up. I believe he went and did the writers version of a spirit walk. lol. I have a feeling this thing will see editing and layout in the next several weeks, folks.

Unless Steve gets eaten by a bear.....

Steve must be a lucky man to take that amount of time off to enjoy the woods and write. Damn, I could probably finish lots of things if I could take a few days here and there.

I think that the sales will be very good for both, but the CKG may be off the charts. This in turn may get peoples attention who were waiting for this to come out to try C&C because they were under the misconception that it is a core book. Either way, with this behind them, they will have a rather large and annoying monkey off their back, and be able to focus on newer projects, with greater revenue to invest back into the business.

I for one can't wait for the collectors set of PHG, CKG, and M&T leatherettes in the slip case...

There needs to be an Aihrde box. Something to hold the folios, the maps, the M&T, the Codex Reduc Libretatti (hehe), and so on and so forth... and then, a combo package for the C&C flip, CKG, OG&M, and like the first half of the Crusader magazines.

Which reminds me... I never got the compilation issues. Maybe they're still in hiatus. I can wait.

+1 on the flip/CKG/OG&M box

Don't know if I'd necessarily put the Crusaders in there. I think I'd actually prefer a set just with the hardbound books: PH, M&T, OG&M and CKG. That'd be my ideal.

While I have no choice but to wait, I really don't want to so -10^8 on that one. Sorry.

Steve HAS to finish this on time now. I just got approval from on high for the expenditure of funds if within the next two months.

has there been any word of an optional skill system coming forth in the CKG?

Don't quote me, but I believe I read somewhere that they will cover it. It may be a rehash of the one that appeared in Zagyg, but we'll have to wait and see I guess.

I think Steve will have a big update sometime tomorrow....if he makes it back from the mountains that is!

I printed the CZ system out before they took it down. In a lot of ways, I'm almost more tempted to simply go back to AD&D 2/e and use the secondary skills. I've thought about incorporating either those or the non-weapon proficiencies into my game, but then I figured, "Why?" That's the reason I have my players write up their characters' backgrounds before we start rolling up characters.

This isn't going the route of soft cover too is it?

I wouldn't complain if it did go the softcover route. With the exception of the newest edition of M&T, all my other books for the current printing are the softcovers. I would hope that, at some point, they can put all the books out in hardcover just so I can get the slip-case set (assuming, of course, that they come out with one) to keep nice and pretty.

Actually Steve did mention quite a few months ago that there would eventually be a set in a slip case and collectors leatherette versions (both of which may well be one in the same....not sure).

I would think that the CKG will be hardcover eventually, but I think it will come out initially as a softcover book. If I'm not mistaken, TLG has to outsource for the hardcovers, but can do softcovers in house for a much lower cost to themselves, therefore a much higher profit margin. In this economy, I don't blame them. Plus, figuring the tight time schedule, they may just have time to print some softcovers up for TrollCon. If they go immediately with hardcovers, I'm not sure they will be done in time.

I would love to be wrong on this though. I prefer hardcover over softcover for asthetic reasons as well as practical reasons. My MTA is already looking craptastic, but only because I have been carrying it around like Linus' blanket.

I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I'd think the CKG would almost have to be hardcover, though I too would be fine with having it as a soft cover just to say I have my hands on it.

I just hope Steve doesn't get eaten by a bear while distracted writing it there in the hills.

After years of waiting, releasing it in any thing other than Hardcover would be anti-climatic.

I'd still buy it mind you. But my inner-gamer would weep a little.

Hardcover or not, just get the damn thing out. You can give the printing press some Viagra later, if that's what you want.

I disagree there. I'd rather wait for a hardcover than rush out a softcover. For it to come out initially in any other format is kinda lame and gives the impression that TLG is lingering, not thriving and that doesn't help build confidence on the part of folks who aren't us diehards that visit the boards and such.

Welcome disagreement indeed, but I'm satisfied with the quality of the softcovers. I played GURPS back in the 90s, and all my materials there were softcover. I would probably just get the hardcovers in the slipcase anyway. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have it in hardcover, but I don't need to have it. I also don't think it sends any negative messages about the company.

I hope you are correct there. But if I was looking at getting into a new system and their first two "core books" are hardcover and the latest one isn't? I would tend to think that they were on the decline and look at a different system instead.

I just want the CKG to be a hardcover because it is a book I will be using. When I use something, I want it to hold together. Softcovers tend to get ripped, dinged, beat to heck and then I have to shelve them and get another... hmm. Maybe a smarter move to make them softcover in that respect.
