Thinking out loud

Has anyone ever toyed around with an idea like this:

Make FIGHTING a skill/ability, and make it Prime / Secondary based on class like the ability scores?

It would use the same d20 Siege check for each and every roll; saves, attacks, skills/siege checks.

Example: FIGHTER, Fighting is Prime (duh), so CB 12 + AC = CC. Roll CC or higher on d20 + level + modifiers.

Perhaps, is this vein, AC should be BtB minus 10 (or its mathematically impossible to hit at 1st level). And/or make the CB lower.

Maybe:

Fighter CB = 6

Other warriors = 8

Cleric/Druid/Rouge (Bard?) = 12

Wizard/Illusionist = 14

Im sure its not worth bothering to playtest, since this is basically what the BtH progression is already (I think). But I was thinking the attack roll is unique in a game where every roll is the same

Actually, for an attack roll, the AC IS the CC isnt it?

But am I making sense?

(Fighting as an ability/skill? Maybe too much Marvel Superheros RPG in my formative years )

See StarSIEGE: Event Horizon.

The combat maneuvers were approached as if they were a SIEGE check, using BtH instead of level (except for fighters who always use level.) I could see it working, but I'd rather not have a "one rule" system. Some things act and perform differently and I'd rather have a different way to handle that.

AHA!

I don't have SS (yet) so that's funny I guess you had the same idea.

Serl, I agree, actually, it's really like the same thing.

I once thoguht to go the other way, use the BTH progressoins as skill progressions.

like, FTR = Level = "expert"

warrior (level -1) = "skilled"

cleric = "good"

etc

so you do, STR expert

WIS skilled

INT untrained (as wiz) and roll from that.

No reason, I just think too much.

Relaxo - I've had the exact same thought, also influenced heavily by what was shown in StarSIEGE. I tried to write up a system that was heavily influenced by both StarSIEGE and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying, but abandoned the effort due to Steam and Amazon having massive sales for 25% off or more.
