I think the best scale for the system is the 6mm one.

I think most any size will work fine . . much depends on what size table you are using and of course, the number(s) of your squads.

1/72 (20mm).

You can find hundreds of plastic figures super cheap.

Good sources: Ceasar (historical and a fantasy line that includes skeletons, orcs, dwarves, elves, goblins, and heros)

Dark Alliance- elves, undead, orcs and historical

Zveda (historical)

HAT (historical)

Most of the above sell 20-40 figures in the $5-10 range.

Boardgames that you can use with 1/72 figures:

Risk: Godstorm

Eagle Games Age of mythology (for tons of D&D type critters)

Eagle Games Conquest of the Empire (about 22mm- so they look a bit large- but that means you can use them as ogres)

Zombies board game- they also sell packages that include 100 zombies, 100 skeletons, 100 female zombies, 100 dogs, and 100 evil clown zombies. Each bag of a 100 costs about 10 bucks. I've made a bunch of ogres figures out of the evil clowns with very little modification.

Plus side over metal (besides cost), I have 1000's of figures that weigh a fraction of what metal minis would weigh.

I think that if the base space for plain board is 1 inch, the basing for miniatures in a 30mm x 30mm is ideal for 6mm figures, you can place there 5 figures or 10 goblins or 2 knights.

I looked into 10 and 15mm figures, but 6mm? Where the heck do you find those little guys? I think it would be cool to have a one inch square with a five dudes on it. If you go bigger, you might have to change the squares to 2" x 2", and do up some 20 or 25mm bases. I have been REALLY wanting to order the 1/72 (20mm) minis; like Cuchulainkevin says, you get a lot of those little dudes for your money.

Bowbe, I think I may break down and buy a bunch of those dudes. You get a boatload I or a few bucks. I really wish they would branch out their fantasy line to include more stuff. I am torn between that and going to 15mm for mass battles.

I've had some success creating my own molds using Alumilite. You can rack up a good number of figures that way as well.

I have a bunch of the War of the Ring figures from Games Workshop. They are super 6mm, and always seemed like they would be perfect for FOB.

Great link mostrojoe. Thanks for sharing.
