What rule would you use? 100 exp per HD? I'm looking for a simple and easy way to keep advancement at a normal level. i really don't care if it leads to hack and slash exp as my games normally have a ton of role playing in between massive hack fests anyway.
Really just looking for simple options since i would rather not award exp for treasure or role playing.
I know I can just not use exp awards and just give them levels or exp as i see fit....that just doesnt work for this group. I need some system in place that everyone knows about ect...

If you only gave exp for HD defeated.........
Back in my 2E days I did 100 XP for level 1, 500 xp for level 2 and 3, and then 1,000 XP for EACH level/Hd for opponents 4th level and above, and the progression through the levels were very close to using XP and treasure.
TABLE:
Level/HD 1: 100 XP
Level/HD 2: 500 XP
Level/HD 3: 500 XP
Level/HD 4: 4,000 XP
Level/HD 5: 5,000 XP
I still kept track of the loot I awarded, so every once in a while I would do an audit, and if I saw a difference between the XP I was awarding versus what it would have been if I awarded for XP and treasure I would then give an XP adjustment award, disguised as something else.
I don't think I ever found myself giving more XP using this method compared to using treasure and XP, but it has been many years, so I could definitely be forgetting such instances, but over all, I found I was giving less XP this way compared to using XP and treasure. Not by much though, maybe 200,000 XP by level 15 or so.
So if you typically do much lower levels, it should work pretty well.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I use the PH/M&T as my main guides for XP rewards, but I do very much like to add individual rewards for . . roleplaying, mapping, puzzle solving, treasure finding (only if it was more work then emptying the pockets of the dead monster), good strategic fighting and or other class specific skills employed - even if unsuccessful.
For instance, a rogue who tries to remove a trap on a chest and fails and he gets set afire or takes a dart . . . he gets XP for his attempt and what he should learn from that attempt. And of course, he gets more if successful.

What if you just doubled the XP from monsters?

It depends. I did the XP above because I wanted a similar rate of level advancement to what awarding XP for monsters AND treasure gave. If you simply double monster XP it will work, but the rate of level advancement will slow down greatly unless you augment it with other very LARGE awards, such as achieving goals, etc...
