Prime for Dark Sun Gladiators

Post by Mark Hall »

So, I was thinking about Dark Sun recently, and wondered:

What attribute should be prime for Dark Sun Gladiators?

As I see it, there are 3 possibilities. The first is Strength, as it is a "beaty" class. The second is Con. The third, and one that works almost as well, is Charisma.

I like that. Not going to use it because I like mine better, but I do like that idea. -Treebore, summing up most home designers' philosophy

Intelligence. For three main reasons:

1) they are not fighters. They're entertainers.

2) they are proficient in every weapon and armor, and can improvise as needed, and actually improve their capabilities.

3) I thought it would be funny.

But, disregarding that, I would go with Con or Cha. Probably Cha for me, since I remove both Knight and Paladin as playable classes.

For my adaptation, I gave Gladiators a Con prime. Just seemed right to me.

That was another consideration. I'd probably rename "Bard" into "Noble", and maybe use the 2e psionics system (if you define the powers as a check against Con, Int or Wisdom, with a DC determined by the power, they actually become somewhat reasonable).

Depends on the type of Gladiator, I suppose. I have 2 types in my games: Pit Fighters (natch for Barsoom/Dark Sun) and Arena Champions (based on the Palladium Fantasy's Gladiator and Caramon Majere from DragonLance: Time of the Twins novel).

Pit Fighters, I'd go with STR, CON and DEX. The idea is to survive since you're lifespan is measured in days at most. You're a slave and your life is going to be ruled by 'We who are about to die salute you!'

Arena Champions, I'd go with STR, INT and CHA. You're not in a Life & Death scene. You need to know how to play the crowd and get them to love you and cheer for you (hence CHA).
