Turning DCs into C&C modifiers

Post by treant_on_fire »

Who wants to take a crack at it? I'm not familiar enough with the SIEGE Engine yet to try this myself...

DC 10 would logically be an unmodified roll, but from there...

The reason behind me wanting to know is because yesterday I've been flipping through 'The Wurst of Grimtooth's Traps' and I was thinking it'd be fun to use it for a C&C game. ^_^

DC = Difficulty Class in 3E terms.

"Difficulty Class"... basically, a target number for an action, usually a skill check or a save.

I'd look at what levels you're talking about, and make up DC for that. "Easy" is character level -1 to -3. Hard is character level +1 - +3. I don't think you can really do a smooth DC conversion.
I don't have to have everything perfect... just good enough that the seams don't show on the monkey suit. -Me
I like that. Not going to use it because I like mine better, but I do like that idea. -Treebore, summing up most home designers' philosophy

There is no direct conversion from DCs to C&C, but I'd suggest a DC10 in C&C be a non-check. In 3E, DC10 is pretty easy stuff. If you definitely needed a conversion over from a DC10, at the very least make the Siege check a straight up roll. I'd even make the CL for the Siege check -3 for DC10.

I'd make DC 15 a stright up Siege check.
DC20 = CL 3
DC25 = CL 6
DC30 = CL 9
DC35 = CL 12
etc.

I'll try that out, thanks.

I'll also compare with the difficulty table given in the StarSiege Introductory Manual.

O.k, I've checked both tables and here's what I got...

3.5 PHB
-------

Very Easy: 0 (Which basically means no roll needed)
Easy: 5
Average: 10
Tough: 15
Challenging: 20
Formidable: 25
Heroic: 30
Nearly Impossible: 30

StarSIEGE Introductory Manual (while it's a different game than C&C it uses the Siege Engine system the same way)
-----------------------------

Easy: -6
Average: 0
Difficult: +2
Staggering: +6
Hopeless: +12
Impossible: +18

NOW

We get rid of Very Easy from the 3.5 table. We get equivalents from each side (from DC to CL):

Easy (DC 5) = Easy (-6)
Average (DC 10) = Average (+0)
Tough (DC 15) = Difficult (+2)

Those are the ones that are a 'sure thing' in their translation imo. From here, given that one table has more than the other, and given the 'Nearly Impossible' and 'Impossible' from each, it becomes a bit less clear. I'm going to pretend 'Nearly Impossible' is not the same as 'Impossible', even if it just might be different flavors for the same challenge, because the line has to be drawn somewhere to make this conversion possible. So let's go with that... Note that where there was no 'equal' on one side I added the same name for the other system. It might not fit when comparing (one table feels more positive than the other :p ) but it's to facilitate comparison between the tables.

Challenging (DC 20) = Staggering (+6)
Formidable (DC 25) = Hopeless (+12)
Heroic (DC 30) = Heroic (+14)
Nearly Impossible (DC 40) = Nearly Impossible (+16)
Impossible (DC 45) = Impossible: +18

And so, all in a neat little bundle:

Easy (DC 5) = Easy (-6)
Average (DC 10) = Average (+0)
Tough (DC 15) = Difficult (+2)
Challenging (DC 20) = Staggering (+6)
Formidable (DC 25) = Hopeless (+12)
Heroic (DC 30) = Heroic (+14)
Nearly Impossible (DC 40) = Nearly Impossible (+16)
Impossible (DC 45) = Impossible: +18

I hope this helps some people, I'll personally be using this conversion table.
