Weapons vs. Armor -- The Second Version

Post by serleran »

Code: Select all

       Primitive Bronze Iron Steel

Primitive -- -1 -2 -3

Bronze +1 -- -1 -2

Iron +2 +1 -- -1

Steel +3 +2 +1 --

The above table assumes a modifier to the attack roll when using a weapon of one technology level against that of another, as defined below. Castle Keeper discretion is needed, especially as it relates to the equivalency of monster attacks or defenses -- for example, it is completely acceptable to rule that dragon hide is equal to Iron until age 6 where it becomes as strong as steel.

Primitive weapons and armors are those of a prehistoric kind, typically made from unworked material such as stone, wood, or metal fragments.

Bronze categorization includes equipment likely found or manufactured during the same age of the real Earth.

Iron, like above, indicates a period of history and the materials/gear available at that time. This is likely the default assumption of the campaign.

Steel is the late Dark Ages or Renaissance-era and includes heavy armors and those of "half nature" such as a simple steel cuirass.

Interesting...particularly if interested in running during a specific era equivalent.

Serl

Good idea, especially for running a game set "between" technology levels (having one country mastering steal while the other is still working with iron).

That is certainly one way to use it. Say, for example, the smiths of the great city Damascus are renown for their mastery of sword creation because they, and only they, know the secret of steel manufacturing...

I can see other options as well, such as the casting of spells or for the enchantment of items. Also, I thought it might be interesting to compare something like a quarterstaff (non-shod) versus plate mail. Certainly it can hit... but the attack roll is not about whether you "hit" as much as it is about whether you inflict damage.

Anyway, the implementation is certainly not perfect. Any feedback welcomed.
