Tad Williams's Memory Sorrow and Thorn Sagas for C&C

Post by Galannor »

Hi everybody, I'm reading for the first time the exceptional sagas "Memory Sorrow and Thorn" by Tad Williams, and I'm thinking about writing a C&C mini campaign within that so flavourful setting. How could I "translate", in C&C game terms, the races, Norns (evil elves/drow?), Trolls (dwarves/forest gnome/halfling mix?), and Sithi (elves?) above all, and the magic (particularly the Binabik shamanic bone casting and the Path of the Dreams)?
Could those of you who read the sagas help me?
Many thanks,
G. :D

The first time I saw this thread title I began wondering when Ted Williams ever got into role playing in the first place.

Can't help you as I've no idea what you're on about. Maybe provide some sort of synopsis for those of us who hate reading fantasy.

It's a really good series. Magic users are RARE!...and powerful magic users even rarer, though they aren't known as magic users, but wise ones. And dragons...dragons are bloody "what army of magical weapons do you have to annoy me with" scary. You pretty well need minor artifacts to hurt them. Conversely, dragons are almost extinct rare.

The Bone Casting is the easiest, it being nothing more than an augury using the bones. Path of dreams...astral projection or an old spell called dream walk, if you can find it somewhere. Something that would equate to out-of-body travel much like the silver cord that githyanki could sever with their swords.

For the races, there really isn't a comparable race for any of those within the series. Don't forget the small dwarven folk that get encountered. Some of the monsters like the Bukken would be cool additions. This is something I've thought of doing myself but just never had the ambition or energy to tackle. Nice to see the setting getting some gamer love.

Thanks for pointing out this fantasy series. Although I have not converted this series into C&C RPG, I have converted other Fantasy Worlds such as Mithgar, Shannara, Diablo, and Lone Wolf. The way I start is to highlight passages in the books that provide details of racial characteristics or classes. Then I compare the closest C&C ability. I did review the Sithi and the C&C Elf would be a good baseline to start with.
