New Maps to be released soon! Poll about packaging...

Post by timburns »

Hey all, we are getting set to release the 9 maps for the land of Ursal, the Aihrdian maps. Those will be ready to ship very soon and we were wondering how people would want them shipped, in tubes or flat? We may offer both, but it may be only feasible to do one or the other, so telling us what you want will help us know how we ship them. So shout it out, in tubes or flat? They are going ot be 12"x18" each. By the way, I hope to have samples of some of the maps up on the blog later today.

Oh, and have the Trolls offer a print/PDF bundle deal. It would be awesome if they do similar to what so many other companies do, offer the PDF for free with a purchase of the print (its not just Paizo, its Cubicle 7 and others..., no subscription required.), but a serious discount on the PDF will be good enough.

Hey Tree, we will certainly think about doing some Print/PDF bundles. I'm curious, what all do they offer free PDFs with Print at Paizo? Admittedly I don't spend a lot of time looking over their stuff, but most of things I see at Paizo, you can add the PDF to it (they have their own server space) but unless you do their subscription, i believe they charge for PDFs. I could be wrong, but that's at least what I've seen.

The 11x18 seems a bit small for a tube mailing, and probably makes for a higher price point. I'm OK with the maps being folded once and sent via envelope.

My understanding, PDFs are only free if you subscribe. They have moved to a more distinct discount of PDFs over print (like latest release.) At the last GTS, the retailers expressed a lot of concern over this, as they could not compete. Paizo seemed to indicate that they were considering ways similar to the Bits and Morter program to give retail customers the same deal with the PDF they could with the Paizo store. I don't follow Paizo as much, so I may have missed any changes beyond this...

Back on topic, I like the folded maps in a portfolio approach for easier storage. While I can appreciate the tube for a more "pristine" map, they end up annoying me in finding places for them.

Now, if you want an outlandish proposition, consider how Triple Ace Games did their map for Hellfrost...cost me $65, but darn is that a nice map!

Yeah, Paizo only gives free PDF's if your part of their subscription program, which is just basically you putting tyourself in their system to buy specific lines of products. Cubicle 7 and others offer a pre order special where if you pre order a given product you get a free PDF with it. Then there are the people doing Eclipse Phase, where they offer their PDF up for sale if you just want to support them financially, but if you go to their designer blogs you can DL the PDF's for free because they did their product via the creative common license.

So for you guys, since you don't have a developed enough cart system, you could either do a pre order deal, when you have enough time to offer one up, or just have a "Premiere Sale" for a week or so, where you give us a nice bundled deal with the PDF, because a good 16 or so of your customers play on line every week. So PDF's are real handy to us.

So if you offer the PDF at a low enough price I'll buy it, otherwise I'll just buy the print version and use my scanner to scan in the maps as I need them.

Tube is more expensive to ship but for good quality maps, worth it.

What are these maps you speak of? New ones of Aihrde? Is there product info somewhere that I missed?

If tubes aren't too expensive then yes, otherwise flat is OK with me.

The Cradle of the World map. I took it, and blew it up 300 % and made one map into 9 pieces.

If you stick em all together it makes a spread roughly 40x60 in size.

As for packaging. I suggested to Steve that some chip board and a clear plastic bag ought to work nicely. :)

Excellente, Sir Peter.

Will there be a little more detail in the New Aenochia/Outremere/Blacktooth Ridge area??

Ah... didn't know the specifics. For some reason I was thinking poster size.

I want to change my vote to flat shipping then.

I mean if that is legal. ;)

Well, I'm going to try and stick all these together in one big poster size. Steve seems to feel he can get them printed. Although I don't think it will be cheap. :?:

I am really excited about this. I have a few questions and requests if its not too late.

Will it be possible to get the full wolrd of Aihrde in its 40x60 size on a one piece poster? For pdf, will the file for the full poster be available (not the segmented one) so that I can have it printed locally? I am going to get a custom vinyl banner with the map on it.

Secondly, is it too late to suggest layered pdf files for maps? Like Tom Tullis does with the Fat Dragon Game tiles, it would be neat to have checkable boxes to print various features and print your own player maps or GM only maps.

Lastly, I was wondering if there is new maps of the Blacktooth Ridge area; the old map for Malforten/Botkinberg could have a lot more detail, showing the Rizen Creek and the trail down to Dreddstun and whatnot. the Craggy Ridge overlooking Malforten, the fairy encounter area, the Imperial Road fragments, the Horned One statue location that points to the Baleon Nakt, and all that. I hope to see this area more detailed.

As a sick mapaholic, I am super freakin' excited about getting these maps in both print and pdf.

It seems that it is not going to be possible to put the amount of detail in these maps as you might find in the Shades of Mist, Darkenfold map. Though, I will reiterate that the Darkenfold map from that module should be released on it's own too. ;)

Actually, the Darkenfold map is part of this set. The others have similar detail.

If the maps are not poster sized and are 11x17 or smaller, I vote folded. Bigger than that, a tube would be best. I really am hoping for a big poster map though.

So there is a new zoomed in look at the Blacktooth Ridge region as well?

What are we looking at for a release date guesstimation?

I am ok with flat if it's cheaper. I am wondering though, if it's the tube and not just the fact that it would be a separate shipment, can you instead of folding them, just bend them and put them in a somewhat but not entirely flat box? Then no creases.

These sheets are set on 13x19 paper. Put 9 of em together and you get the poster size I mentioned earlier, roughly.

I'm still tidying up terrain. Shouldn't be any longer than early next week though, given time for printing and the like.

At 11x19 definitely tubes, then. Or those triangle things USPS offers. Shipping will be like $5 in the US, which includes the triangle thing, if you go by USPS. Go to their website and they will send them to you.

I'm less worried about how the maps ship then what kind of paper they are printed on. The map that came with Umbrage Saga, was thin, glossy paper, that feels as if it will tear at the slightest misuse. Not so good. These should be on sturdy, heavy weight paper, me thinks.

I agree with that wholeheartedly. The paper is pretty thin on that map; I am leery of having it at the gaming table as is. I keep meaning to get it laminated. Hopefully these wrap up soon; I am wondering if this means the new Codex is fast on it's heels. The maps are showing new locales, towns, etc. so I imagine the new codex will give a little explanation of these newly placed locations.

If you have The Facebook, the Trolllord posted up an image on one peice of the map. It's totally rockin' so much so that I wouldn't mind getting these laminated. When these maps are released, I'm going to finally dive right into to Erde.

Depending on price and what time of the month they come out I'll be ordering 2 sets. 1 will be going to Staples and get professionally laminated, unless the Trolls can do it and offer the option.
