Dragon Save Bonus?

Post by Snoring Rock »

Ok, so monsters make saves using HD as the bonus and are prime in either the mental attributes or physical or both. With a dragon it is both.

In the M&T I see on a chart for ages; a bonus for saves. What is that?

If I have a dragon, a white dragon lets say; and he is 270 years old, placing him in the Mature range. That gives him HD: 15. So a wizard casts a spell at the dragon and the dragon must make a save vs intellegence lets say. The dragon has 15 HD and is prime in mental attributes, that adds 6 right? So his save bonus is 21. Does this bonus on the chart add to that? Holy cow....26?

Do I have that correct?

If you are adding the wizard's CL for the spell to 18, then RAW you are correct.

Fortunately there isn't any Spell Resistance to get through as well in your given example should the dragon fail their save or otherwise be affected by the spell.

One does not tangle with dragons without a really good reason.

I am really loving C&C. Dragons mean something once again. I just got a younger group of players (from Pathfinder) to try the game for a few sessions. The fisrt night I heard one player asking where the feats were at the beginning of the game. By the end of the session, he was dazed and amazed. He was there early the next session, talking up how cool it was to have so many more options that he could just make up in his head. The others are hooked bad. I love this game. Dragons are not to be messed with. They are no longer repositories for treasure hoards to be easily taken.

That is correct Snoring Rock. Your 15 HD white dragon is +20 on his saving throws (HD15+bonus5) with a challange base of 12. Using the prime adds 6 to the dice roll alternate rule, your 15 HD white dragon is +26 to all saving throws.

This has been debated many times over the years. TLG finally just came out and said that dragons are intented to be tough on saving throws as they are... DRAGONS! However, dragons are limited in their BTH being equal to only 1/2 their HD value. Somewhat of a trade off, but still at +15 to hit for your white dragon, LOOK OUT!

Dragons as presented by the Trolls are tough. But as the long-time posters here know, I didn't think the C&C dragon was tough enough. :)
