Use or misuse of Mage Hand?

Post by Snoring Rock »

So, I have thei inventive wizard in the game. He wants cast mage hand, but when he does so, would like to wield a weapon with it. There are few weapons that are less than 5 pounds. So he would be limited to a dagger or an arrow maybe. I would restict that to not being able to place more than 5 pounds of force behind it either. My thought would to allow it but the strike would be as if done by someone with a strength limited to 5 pound thrusts. That would be no moe than a strength of 3 or even less. So the BtH would be -3 or even -4..er maybe -5. Any other take on this?

RAW Mage Hand cannot be used to wield weapons. It can only move objects from one point to another. So it could pick up the dagger and deliver it to a waiting rogue or fighter, but not be used to attack.

Mage Hand is just a very limited form of telekinesis. There is no real hand, just the wizard pointing a finger and manipulating a small object. Reading the spell Telekinesis, it states a weapon can be wielded and the wizard gets his INT bonus as a to hit bonus. Going by this, I would say the STR penalty that is obvious with Mage Hand and the INT bonus would effectively equal out and just let the wizard attack with his normal to hit prowess, which is very poor. Basically, allow him to melee at range with a small weapon. And it only lasts while he concentrates, so he can't do anything else.

Another thing to consider is the limited range of this spell. 25'. The mage is unlikely to want to stand in what amounts to attack range doing nothing but twiddling his finger to try to attack with a dagger he's not especially good with....there is no gain or purpose in this.

Also, I believe, if memory serves, that this very question came up in one of the Sage Advice columns soon after the spell debuted.
