Familiars for druids?
Familiars for druids?
What's the best source for picking a familiar for a druid? My group is starting on Monday, and one of the players was curious.

Thanks again. With 1E, wasn't there a particular time a druid gained their familiar?

Hmm, I don't recall that. I think they just had the Animal Friendship spell at first level. I might not be remembering that correctly though.

I don't see it being handled any differently in C&C. Rather than just "gaining" an animal companion, the druid should be required to use Animal Friendship (1st level) on an available creature.kreider204 wrote:Hmm, I don't recall that. Yeah, I'm with RedWullf on this one: Animal Friendship is, in my opinion,
as good if not better than a Familiar. Yes, the mage needs those extra
Hit Points and the Familiar's special abilities are helpful, but the Druid gets
to hook up with a multitude of different critters and, when they
part, no loss of Hit Points.
Many years ago in a 1E game, I had a cave bear living in a "cave" which
was really the entrance to a tomb complex, figuring he'd be the party's
first hurdle/combat. The Druid animal-friended him and, boy, did that
give them a worthwhile edge for the rest of the adventure!
So, no, Druids (I think) shouldn't get Familiars.

As compelling as that book sounds (and we all know I'll buy it anyway), I'm a little iffy on the notion of familiars (or animal companions) for everyone. I'll reserve final judgement, however, until the book comes out.kreider204 wrote:We can always wait for this, too:

What, you don't like the idea of a barbarian with a pet squirrel?!
Re: Familiars for druids?
Heh. Actually, that sounds like one of the ones I'd allow.kreider204 wrote:What, you don't like the idea of a barbarian with a pet squirrel?!
Now, a Knight with a "pet" lion is a whole different story...
