May have a player doing a monk/barbarian multi-class

All of my players in A0:The Rising Knight are level one. A couple of them wish to multi-class. The monk player isn't crazy about his choice and wishes to multi-class with barbarian. Any thoughts. After tonight, I'll know if he's doing that, or if he's just going to scrap the monk, and go with a new barbarian character.

Personaly Barbarian is a class your born into. A person who grew up in a fierce tribal society. Monks are pretty much the exact oppisite of a barbarian in my opinion.
However it is your game and your player. do what you think is right and keep everyone happy.

That was kind of my thought. I'll have to see if he's going to start anew or not.

Thing is, due to popular culture, a lot of people when they see 'barbarian' they think either 'northman' or Conan. Logical reasons for the combo.
The monk character could come from a section of a given nation that isn't entirely civilised, but still has a certain spiritual leaning. If it's an oriental culture, a bit of research will show up loads of 'barbarian' tribes that one can model their character from.
For a more 'western' themed barbarian, the character could have found himself a teacher in hand to hand brawling styles. There were more than a few, even in a typical medieval or renaissance setting.
In both cases, a wandering traveller teaching the character either set of class abilities could make for a good bit of backstory for the character.

Non-weapon martial arts were developed in highly civilized lands where weapon use/possession was curtailed for certain classes. The likelihood of a Barbarian/Monk right out of the gate are slim to, none.

I would apply the "Castle Keeper is the final arbiter of any multi-class decisions" rule on this one.

If the player doesn't like hte monk class, he should just roll a new character. Or ask them what they're looking for before assigning a class, and decide what fits best.
that said, a monk/barbarian would be SO kick ass.

Possible backstory:
the character was found after a battle by a barbarian who took him to the closest place to offload him onto others' care (a monestary). But, in accepting the offer of food and a bed for the night, the monks and barbarian traded tales. Since the barbarian had seen much more of the world than they, one of them asked to travel with him (also thinking to instruct him on more civilized behavior). The head monk, thinking to keep them both out of trouble, agreed to this only if they took the young boy with them on their travels. So, other than training each other in their cultures and fighting styles, they wandered with the boy until he became a man. The character IS a monk/barbarian, having been taught and brought up by both -- it's the only way of life he's ever known.
