Resurrection survival checks?

Post by Metathiax »

Do you use such checks in order to make death seem less trivial (buy 2 resurrections and get 1 for free...just kidding... )? If you do, how do you handle them?

IMHO a permanent con point loss for death is restrictive enough...but if you wanna be a tough CK, give the survival check a 5% chance of success per con point (after subtracting one for their death) and with 96-100% always being a failure regardless of con), any roll higher than that brings the character back for a brief moment only to immediately die again of a heart attack (costing the character second con point and requiring another resurrection). That'll make players think twice about risking death.

...The problem is, if they fear death too much, they become too hesitant to have much fun.

At one time resurrections were quite common in my games, now days however finding someone capable of casting resurrection or even raise dead is quite rare.

I don't think having the PC roll a con check of some type, would be too hard, death should be very serious occurrence, not just a minor inconvenience.

I know that's the classic way to deal with survival checks but I don't like its double reliance on CON. It makes this attribute too important relatively to the others. I was thinking about something more in line with a CHA check (death attack) with the loss of a CON point or maybe even a WIS check still with the CON loss? Not sure though...

Yeah, these are both good points...

In the past I haven't let "raise dead" type spells be available. I don't like the implications for the game world and all.

I think the next game I run will allow the magics to technically be available, but will require that the slain character's soul be retrieved from the afterlife before the spell can be cast. I'm Norsing it up next time, too: so they're going to have to get past Garm as well.

In my 3e games, I used a dc 6 con check, which was automatically made by a 20 con. In C&C, maybe a straight con save, all characters count con as prime for the purpose of this save.

THIS sounds like fun! Gives a reason to make quick trips to the Planes... and you can even give the "dead" character some side adventuring on the planes to keep pace in level... hmmmmm.
