stupid question

Post by doominicus »

equipment list on the PHB pag45: what the hell is gord?
I have searched for a translation for it on wordreference and dicios, but nothing came out. then I seek on wikipedia but what came out, has no sense to me: a name of person, the rogue created by EGG, a gastric desease and the word god crippled in english.
Anyone can help me?

Could it have been "gourd" which was intended?

While it is true that the item was intended to be a gourd and may need to be replaced, and that such a thing would be meant for storing water... a gord is also an acceptable piece of equipment for it refers to dice or any of a variety of ephemeral gaming devices, including cards, chits, tokens, and the like.

So, take it either way. However, price may seem a little odd.

Yep agree, unless your hiring someone (Named Gord) to carry water around for you.

BTW I believe that there is no such thing as a stupid question. Stupid answers, yes. Stupid questions, no.

gord is also a correct variant spelling of the word gourd.

Sounds like an American spelling. Much like 'armor' and 'color'. ;)

Years of playing D&D have broken my tendency to spell armor as 'armour' but I am mindful of the use of 'colour'. That said, for me a gourd was always a gourd. ;)

Gord the Roge can carry gourds of water if he has the colourful and armoured Chert along with him. ;)

I couldn't find that variation. But I found serl's definition maultiple times. *shrug*

That said, I believe this gord is one for carrying water, considering it weighs a pound. If dice, or similar instruments of gaming, weigh a pound, that's some big dice.

Thank u: in my last session, my players asked me "but what is a gourd?" and I said "honestly I don't know". I hate to do that. My players must think I know all and never try to catch me flatfooted.

Actually, it predate the U.S. The O.E.D. has it listed as an older English spelling. Funny, I use armour, colour, etc., because I went to a private primary school where the British spellings were taught. :)

taken from the super precious pdf that serleran sent to me:
"Aclis: An aclis is a small, light, throwing spear, sometimes with a very broad head, but more often with
a thinner, more refined point."

If you can score a copy of Gygax's World Builder (sadly OOP now) published by Troll Lord Games then you will get a wonderful resource that includes pictures of a great many weapons and types of armo(u)r with descriptions. I highly recommend it alongside the extraordinary book of names (also a Gygaxian book by TLG and OOP) and AEG's Ultimate Toolbox for the time-limited CK/GM. For a look at building interesting and fun Dungeons and Castles look no further than TLG's Engineering Dungeons and Engineering Castles by the board's own Serleran/Robert Doyel.

I've seen copies of Palladium's old weapons books which were similar (filled with useful illustrations, that is). Is Palladium still publishing these, or are there really that many still in warehouses and on shelves?

I doubt that Palladium is still printing them, but they are probably still selling them. But, if not, the usual haunts of eBay and the like can find a copy of the "blue book" (the best bang for the buck) for relatively little -- I wouldn't expect you'd have to spend more than $10, sans shipping, to acquire it. One of my favorite RPG books, in fact.

As regards the aclis (it has more than one conceivable spelling)... like the gord, there is some mud to filter. Could it be an aklys, which is defined as both a throw capable spiked mace (sort of like a baseball bat with nails driven through it, leather thong wrapped at the end for easy carrying) or as a javelin-type weapon; it may also be considered kin to darts and boomerangs. For my minor document, I went with the definition I could find most often -- small spear. However, I sort of like the idea of it being a multipurpose weapon, used in mêlée and, if needed, heaved against a running foe. In any event, I've never claimed to be an expert, historian, or archaeologist... so take whatever description of it you like and run away with it.
