How do you gus calculate the encumbrance value of gold pieces?

It may be in the book, but if not, I go with 50 coins = 1 EV. For me, I don't care what kind of coin it is as I try very hard to not play Abacus and Counting.

Coins weigh one (1) ounce each. There are 16 ounces (coins) in a pound. A loadstone with a weight of 1 lbs. has an EV of one (1). So, you should be able to extrapolate from that example & data...

I make it easy in this regard and go for 100 coins = 1 EV.

This is what I do as well. 100 coins to the pound, with that equaling 1 EV (what fits in a small belt pouch).
That makes the average coin about the size of a dime (similar to Roman silver coins).

"Coins (50) Varies 1 lbs. 1 --"
That's the answer I gave above... Although Traveller had 10 coins at 1 EV

I'm confused. The answer you gave above was that a coin weighed 1 ounce and was 1 EV.

Eh, it's early.
Anyway, 50 coins = 1 lb. = 1 EV isn't bad. That's basically the 3.5 D&D way. It's curious why it never made it in the book. Until it does, though even if it does, I'll probably stick to 100 coins to an EV...I like it much better. Either one is better than the coins = 1 ounce, 16 coins = 1 lb. = 1 EV. Your logic was sound, Arduin, with the lodestone comparison but the EV system takes in bulk, too, so it's not as easy a comparison, in my opinion at least. That's a little too steep in my mind.
Honestly, I think that there shouldn't be a hard rule to this. I know, that's crazy, but considering we all have differing opinions on how much coins should weigh and big/bulky they are, I think it should intentionally be left to the CK. I guess it can be house ruled, though, so it's all good I suppose.

(it's early for me right now

) I said 1 coin = 1 ounce. 16 = 1 pound. In the tables a 1 pound loadstone = 1 EV. So, one can easily extrapolate how many coins = 1 EV (~16). Perhaps toss a few more coins (total 20) in as they are a little denser than a loadstone.

I think I got ya. The way you wrote your post made it sound like you were saying that you originally said the 50 coins to an EV thing. I'm awake now, though.
