Incorporating Feats via an XP cost

If I were to run a C&C game, I'd doubt I'd allow Feats in there using the same system as in 3e. Introducing something like that in a C&C game however is not for everyone, since some enjoy how rules-light C&C is.

As a side-note, despite the similarity of this thread to what has been said about 'D&D Next', I've actually pondered this for a while... (I even have a similar old thread lingering somewhere in these forums about 3e's ECLs being translated into XP costs per level for C&C. I just introduced the idea, I didn't come up with an actual system or cost, so don't look for it if you hope to find that.) O.k, so my idea: what if some players want Feats but others don't? Easy.

Have Feats cost XP. First of all, to say everyone gains a Feat for free every three levels in a system where not everyone levels up at the same time feels odd to me.

You don't want players to go crazy in Feat-buying either though, so you should set the limit of Feats a character can get at the traditional <1 Feat/3 levels + 1 Feat>. That means that you can't start with a Feat, but you can learn it during your first level if you make enough XP for it. That way Feats are still limited by level, but not as linked to each other.

Now here is where I need some feedback, because I'm still unsure about the XP cost. I was thinking <200 xp + [character level x 100] xp>

That would mean a level 1 character could buy one Feat at 300 xp. A level 3 character could buy a 2nd additional Feat at 500 xp.

Characters can't buy more than one Feat per level. (Even if a level 4 has enough xp to buy 2 Feats and he has taken none so far, he can only get one until level 5)

If a character buys his first Feat at level 2 (400 xp) and his second a level 3 (500 xp), it will cost him more XP than if he had gotten the first during level 1 (300 xp) and then the next during level 3 (500 xp).

O.k, feel free to send me feedback. Not the "Either give Feats for free or don't give them!" type of feedback, more like the "I think the amount of xp you use is perfect/too high/ too low BECAUSE..." type. Thanks! :)

I have a system I posted here before, but the forum rules on document attachment make no sense. Cannot upload pdf, doc, or txt, so I'm not going to bother with it. If you want it, ask for it.

Your costs are too low.

Yep. Feats belong in another game. C&C is fine just like it is. 8-)
