Question about Spellbooks and Leveling Up

I've been ruling that when a Wizard gets his new spell for leveling up, he has to pay the cash required for the required spell pages in his spellbook. The cost per the PH is 100 GP per page; 2 pages required per spell level.

Just curious if others require Wizards to pay for their "free" spells or not.

Man, you're a slave driver!

I allow the spell for free, as a kind of "Aha!" moment that's happened sometime since last level up. The wizard has been able to piece together enough information, fact, research, or whatever you want to call in just in the right quantities to constitute a new spell for his repertoire. It takes up the normal amount of space in his spellbook.

I don't require spellbooks, in the traditional sense, but in the general concept, yes, I make them pay for the spell gained. A fighter has to pay to upgrade and maintain his weapons... wizards already have it easy, being so powerful, a little smack to the wallet isn't going to break them.

Pay for the level benefit spells you say? Fantastic idea. I will now use this.

Wizards in my games have to either find any additional spells other than starting, or find a higher level wizard willing to "tutor" them in a new spell or two for a hefty amount of cash. They get nothing for free other than 100 pages in their initial spell book. once those are gone, they have to build a new book for additional cost.

No more than I make other classes pay for what they receive when they level up, per the rules.
