Rangers and Humanoids

Hmm, so rangers get this nice +1 Damage per level vs. Humanoids.
Does this cover ALL beings of the humanoid type from M&T?
So, everthing from Humans and Halfings to Hobgoblins and Hags?
Interesting... I don't mind, makes the ability more useful, just wondering if that is suppose to work that way by design, or not.

Wow, humans, halflings, etc. used to be called demi-humans in old-school D&D so the Ranger's humanoid list did not include them. Interesting question. I wouldn't think so though.

It gives examples for humanoids in the Combat Marauder description within the book that to me makes it abundantly clear that rangers do not get the bonus against player character races. Against creatures of the "humanoid" type, I'd probably give the bonus.
This is C&C's answer to the AD&D question of how a kobold could be considered a "giant-class" creature when it wasn't a giant.

you are allowing evil rangers in your campaign you might consider having an "anti-ranger" that gets the bonus against humans/elves/dwarves etc.

IMC this does not apply to the PC races.

One thing one mignt do, is allow a ranger from a given culture or tribe to have a 'species enemy' that is another culture or tribe. Just a thought.

In my game world, the ranger gets the bonus against any creature that is a threat to his homeland, whether the ranger knows it or not (its sort of a divine ability.) So, this means an orc just chopping down a tree to make a home is not a threat and no bonus is given... but, against the humans doing the logging... it applies. A lot more CK effort, but I feel its worth the time.

Yep, I agree with the BtB explanation.

I defintely run this by the book as well. I like it, even if BTB it might be a bit powerful. [Borat] Very nice. [/Borat]

Omote, so are you saying versus PC races too, or just the orcs, goblins, gnolls, hobgoblins, etc?

I'm not including the PC races in the Ranger's humanoid list because of the way the listed races is done. "(bugbears, gnolls, goblins, hobgoblins, kobolds, orcs, and the like)" To me, "and the like" doesn't fit the PC races.

I allow it to include any humanoid/giant race that is perceived by the Rangers society to be a "threat" to their civilization. Such as in Erde, forces of Unklar would qualify for Rangers from territories neighboring Unklars lands. Centuries of fighting there.
Of course Rangers on Unklars side would have the same benefit against them.
