Updating the CK Screen.

I have made a PDF with the new 5th printing encumbrance categories which can be "stamped" ontop of the the PDF of the portrait CK Screen PDF, thus "updating" it to the 5th printing. While I did this initially for my own use, it occured to me I could share it with others. I did not know though if (a) there would be interest or if (b) this would be permissable.
The only thing contained in the PDF is just the table with the new encumbrance categories, and the acompaning effect descriptions. No other text, or art is included. You still would need the original CK Screen PDF to get the whole thing.
It is also the perfect size for cuting and pasting the new info onto a physical CK screen.

That sounds great. Thanks for doing that!
What I'd also like to see someday from TLG is all the content from the portrait screens reformatted to the landscape screens. I own the original portrait cardstock screens and while I'm not a big fan of portrait screens, the content is absolutely superb. I use almost every table every session. Whereas, I love the two piece "landscape" (really they're square) screens for their heavy chipboard construction and awesome artwork, but the non-combat screen contains mostly information I hardly ever need to reference. Do other CKs out there frequently find themselves consulting the rules to find out what the climate in a dry steppe is in September? Or the weight of one bottle of Malmsey? I really miss having the XP tables and weapon damage tables (running lots of encounters on the fly was a breeze when you can use XP tables on the fly and drop random interesting weapons and know what damage/range they have). Not to mention all the class abilities by level.

Well, I for one would like it and thank you for all the work!

I haven't updated the CK Screen pdf since the third print. Guess it's overdue.

Indeed Traveller it is. I used your CK screen for, what was probably 5 years!

Alright to stamp the update you will need ghostscript and pdftk installed. You can get ghostscript from here:
http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/ and pdftk from:
http://www.pdflabs.com/tools/pdftk-the-pdf-toolkit/
You will also need the PDF ive made to stamp onto the interior of the CK screen. You can get that from here:
http://2tu.us/6a43
Pdftk does not like the PDF from DriveThruRPG for some reason. So first you need to run it through ghostscript to fix it for pdftk. You can do this on the command line by running the following command, substituting "<inputPDF>" for the filename of the CK screen.
Code: Select all
gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=simplerCKScreen.pdf <inputPDF>
(Note: Windows users may need to use "gswin32" instead of "gs".)
Then you can apply the stamp using pdftk, thusly.
Code: Select all
pdftk simplerCKScreen.pdf multistamp stamp.pdf output upgradeCKScreen.pdf
This should then produce the upgraded CK screen. This will only work correctly on the portrait CK screen PDF from DriveThruRPG/RPGNow. I did my best to match the fonts but it isn't perfect.
Please remember to backup your PDF before mucking around with it.

I can't really remember. Were there any significant changes between the third and the fourth print that would affect the screen?
I will update my CK Screen PDF as soon as my copies of the 5th print arrive. While I do have a copy of the new encumbrance rules in my possession, there may have been changes between my copy and the finished product so I have to wait. In the meantime, trashheap's fix will work for people who have the official screen, since he mentions Drivethrurpg.

I prefer the landscape screen, but yes I miss all the information from the portrait style. Overall, the landscape version has very little that is pertinent to my needs. Weather patterns and so forth are interesting, but what do we as CK's typically look for? Especially new Ck's. Weapon tables for damage, armor tables for AC, and so forth. I am hoping this is redone asap. I love the landscape style screen though, and it was well done. Just doesn't do what I need it to do. So now I am trying to do my own screen pdf and put it in the customizable landscape screen I have from Hammerdog Games. It is pretty badass.

Yep, this is my sentiment exactly. I love the format (the two piece screen is great), artwork, and build quality of the new landscape screens but the content on the non-combat screen is mostly useless for me. I'm always sad when I gear up for my game and am loading my game bag, and despite how pretty my new landscape screens are, I reach past them and grab my old portrait ones because they're more useful.

I still have yet to get the landscape screen, but I prefer the portrait for a few reasons (based on what I'm hearing). The artwork on the portrait screen is amazing. It's one of Peter Bradley's best pieces EVER. Much of the info on the PS is useful---maybe a few changes could be made. If I might get off point a bit, I would like to see one or two changes for the portrait. I had a chance to sit it next to Pathfinder's screen. I like the art better on C&C's, but PF's is all one piece. PF's is laminated? and a little easier to read, as well. Then again, I'm not sure who's printing the PF screen. Might be overseas. At the end of the day, I would love to see a one piece portrait or landscape with Pete's original artwork, and only a few bits of stats traded out in favor of other useful information.
