First, let me make it clear that I over all LOVE the 5th printing!

However...

Anyone else feel that some color choices brought the book down a couple of notches over all? To give a couple of examples, out of maybe 5 or 6 pictures over all, the color used in the pictures on pages 21 and 75. For me they make the pictures so bad I'd rather they not even be there.

So like I told Steve in an e-mail, if he ever even saw and read it, if they do another color print run I hope they change this up and use an actual color range to bring out what is going on in the pictures, rather than muddy them out and make it take a little bit of effort to even make out what is going on.

Anyone else feel similar?

I was disappointed after seeing the PDF first. I realize it's not trivial to color match the print to the screen, nor is my monitor by any means calibrated, but yeah, the colors came out more dull in my print copy. It's still mostly nice, just nothing like the vibrant PDF.

My p. 21 and 75 are both just dark brown messes.

The picture on page 75 doesn't bother me that much, especially since there was some highlights of color used (give me a "darkened room" feel). The picture on page 21 is a little rough, in my opinion. I don't think it adds to the quality of the book, but I feel it doesn't take away, either. The one pic that kind of made me scratch my head was on page 135. I wondered why, if the hammer is glowing (it appears to me) why is the shadow coming on that side of the face? Overall, I do like the picture, though.

The book looks great, but I think we all want to see it shine in . . at 100% perfect.

I agree and said so on my youtube post. Overall the coloring was GOOD, not great.
To be truthful I think I prefered it in black and white, but I understand most would
want it in color.

Like Dynel, I find page 75 ok, but if the contrasts were popping more, like more highlilghts and the shadows deepened while the predominant tone was lightened, that might work.

page 21 is a little muddy. it's hard to see the illo, which is a shame, because it's a good one.

Ironically, it was probably Peter who colorized these and he might have made them just they way he wants them? I dunno.

I'll second the feeling that overall, the book is sweet.

I envisioned those two images as occurring in dimly illuminated locations, thus the brown coloration.

Dimly lit locations look like shades of grey and black to me, not a mud fight. Plus I should be able to tell what is going on in a picture in a couple of seconds, not have to look at it closely for 10 to 15 seconds.

Do they? Not when you have fire in play. Fireglow actually makes things you can see around them reddish, with the color shifting to orange-yellow the closer you get to the source. Now, I do agree that page 21's image could be a bit more defined, like that on page 75. However, I like the atmosphere the two pics provide of dark places with danger present or lurking around the corner.

Of course, I am the odd man.

I don't think so. I grew up with a fireplace in my home. The only time I saw people lokking "red", or yellow from the fire is when the went up to tend it. Get a few feat back and everyone looked greyish.

Plus, my problems with these pics is the "red out" coloration makes them too difficult to make out. ?So I would much prefer to see them recolored to make it easy to tell what is going on. As it is they are just big blobs of red that you have to look at closely to even be able to make out what is going on, let alone pick out details.

I do agree it is easier to tell in the PDF, but still ugly, in my opinion. Still something that knocks the book down a few notches, not help elevate it.

I don't even know if the Trolls will ever do another color printing. If they do I sure hope they change the coloration on those pictures. Now if Peter was going for an effect like is on p. 117, that is much cooler. But I doubt it because the color issue was obvious in the PDF.

Page 32 is anothe r picture I think suffers from too much red. The one on page 10 I think turned out well, but it has much less red too.
