I was searching for pictures online for representations of the armours listed in the C&C players handbook. I was looking for the coat of plates and I noticed some of the coats nicknames (jack of plates) and I noticed that the coat has an AC bonus of +5 and I thought "sweet! thats pretty good" and I began cross referencing real coats vs C&C coats. I had to laugh when comparing the weights of the 2 items. C&C coat 45 lbs of armor. Real coat of plates … 17 pounds. Sometimes I think game designers randomly select weights for armors they stick in their games.
No complaints to the troll lords, I just got a good laugh out of perceived armor weight versus actual armor weight.

Re: real armor weights vs perceived armor weights
I'm assuming that 17 pounds is simply the coat of plates, not the chain tunic worn underneath the plates to guard the joints against anything except little pricks... sorry for the joke I couldn't resist, or the leather tunic worn under the chain mail tunic to prvent you from becoming black, red and blue all over from the steel or iron dust, the bruising from metal impact and the red from pinches and cuts due to the metal armorjdizzy001 wrote:I was searching for pictures online for representations of the armours listed in the C&C players handbook. From what I have watched and learned on various "educational" programs, and assuming they did actually know what they were talking about, RPG's have never accurately reflected the "reality" of armor or weapons, its all an "abstract work", so much like an abstract painting, not much to do with reality.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Assume the coat of plates works a bit differently in the fantastic realm of your games. I would assume that monst of our games do not take place in medieval Earth. The fantasy worlds of these games developed the coat of plate a bit differently than here on Earth, and as such, weighs 45 lbs.

@ Draycian: Tuche, I didn't give thought to the layers of armor they would be wearing.
@ Tree: Yeah, I realized that too.
@ O: True, but most of my worlds have similar developmental patterns, but point well taken.

Well, having owned a knee-length coat of chainmail with coif, plus the padding underneath, I can definitely say that weights in game are a bit light. My suit was 80# all together.

Re: real armor weights vs perceived armor weights
I had a friend who took up chain knitting in high school and the long sleeved tunic weighed like 30 pounds lol but Omote does bring up a valid point if we were to be wearing that on say the moon it would feel like ten pounds or soGo0gleplex wrote:Well, having owned a knee-length coat of chainmail with coif, plus the padding underneath, I can definitely say that weights in game are a bit light.
