Hmmm... My packing tape has yellowed a little bit on the old stuff, but its still holding up fine. I would guess you used 3M?

For the applying of laminiting sheets and contact paper how do you handle the corners, do you fold one side then the other, do you cut the paper if so how?

@Treebore: I don't know if you were asking me, but it was so long ago I don't remember what brand it was. My current tapes of choice come from the post office or Duck. In one case (GURPS) I used clear duct tape on the spine. This was because the front cover had separated from the rest of the book. The duct tape and some white glue keeps the cover attached.
@Dracyian: The corners of the book? If that's what you're asking, with contact paper I simply take an extra inch or two of the contact paper and fold it over the edge of the cover. I then trim the top and bottom edges with a pair of scissors. Doing this seems to limit shrinkage of the contact paper. With laminating plastic you can get away with simply trimming all the edges. If necessary, the corners can be reinforced with scrap pieces of contact paper or even tape. However, if the paper has begun fraying in layers, I use some white glue to stiffen the corners, then if needed reinforce them as previously mentioned.

Check this video on youtube. This girl does a great job of explaining, though I can't imagine shes much older than pre-teen.

For a book I will use a ton when I run games hardcover would have been better.
Have some good, clear packing tape? Put about a 1 inch+ border of packing tape around those edges, it will hold up for years. Been doing that myself to my heavy use soft covers, and they are still holding up great, some of them being over 8 years old. Modules too. I also run tape up the spines.
I think Tomorrow will be spent with a roll of tape and some of the materials I have acquired to protect them. I have been laminating the maps when they are small enough
You can get large maps done at Staples, assuming they have the large machines, for about $15. I am talking the REALLY big maps, like Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms or Wilderlands big.
I am a Staples junky. All of my maps are laminated. I own stock in Staples. D'oh!

This is pretty much exactly what I do with mine and the material she used is the same. It's very thick and protects very well. I"ve never had any shrinkage or discoloration. This technique is why I'm so happy to buy softcovers as it works awesome. The only thing I wasn't doing was the trick with the ruler. I'm totally going to use that technique next time, thanks for posting!

Glad to help. I've done this with paperback novels as well, to keep my older stuff in good shape.

And on sale! And I have to say, I love this cover art. I generally enjoy Waltons work, but this cover piece is truly a stand out. Even better than the M&ToA and I liked that a lot.

It is very good. I wasn't really interested in getting this until I saw how cool the cover looked. So agree with whomever it was who got this at Gen Con and said how good the cover was.

I am pretty tempted.... That's a slick looking book... I mean did give away my last flip book to one of my players, so I need another one right?

Yes, yes you do
I think the great covers along with retaining the black-and-white interior is what sells me on this. Don't get me wrong, the color in the PH is nice (overall) and I think the new cover is amazing, but for my tastes this exactly what I've wanted, and I thank whomever at TLG decided to keep a flip-book in print (if only it was in hardcover!).

I'm really hoping Tyler has some of these at Gamehole con, but for something like this I prefer a soft cover, but I saw the art and decided that even though I have 3 phbs now and M&T already I need this

I like the B&W Interior as well. I have the color PDF and it's great, but in flipping through a color hard copy, I wasn't in love with the red text on the parchment background. For my eyes, it's just harder to read than the B&W. Plus they didn't fix the Ranger art so I didn't have the motivation to buy a 5th hard copy of the PHB.

Yar. The color copies of the PHB are pretty, but hard on the eyes when you read them. I'm all over the B&W flip book the first chance I get. B&W FTW.

I wonder if they took the time to make the text corrections that I noted on the boards shortly after the 5th print was released.

A friend of mine (on two occasions) has pointed out to me that the explanation of how the Siege Engine works on page 123? doesn't really say anything about lowering the challenge for easier tasks. It mentions adding 1 or more to the challenge for easier or harder tasks. There was a passage much earlier in the phb that refered to subtracting. An example of reducing the challenge level is given in the CKG. I never really thought about it, but I'm forced to agree. As written, the phb lays out the 12 and 18 target numbers, and gives a bit of a guideline for raising the difficulty from 1 to as high as 20. It also says to err on the side of caution by keeping the target number low. (paraphrasing a great deal). However, unless I've missed another passage elsewhere, a new player (with only a phb and no tutorial from an experienced player) might only "raise" the challenge levels as laid out in the phb. The Siege Engine works well, but parts of the explanation might benefit from a slight rewrite. My friend also said that a table with examples of of easy, moderate, and difficult tasks would make a nice addition to the book. My buddy likes parts of C&C, but there things he doesn't care for. Using a monster's hd (at least in some cases) as part of the challenge for a player's siege check, going much over +10 difficulty for siege checks, and he pointed insanely high challenge levels for intelligent swords....but I digress. Lol

I see no problem in using a monsters HD to determine difficulty. As a matter of fact, this mechanism makes it possible to have more balanced game at higher levels. Without that, you'd have cake walks for the high the PC go...

Personally, I don't have a problem adding the monsters HD. I primarily agree with my friend that a better explanation is needed regarding lowering challenge levels. It seems to be all but non-existent. All of us may know what to do, but to a green gamer, lowering challenges may not be a given from just reading the phb. Otherwise, Siege Engine....goooooood.

Yes, I could see that as a problem for GM's that are new to running FRPG's in general.

Other than the part that says that unless the roll actually matters to the game, don't roll, I do not recall a section on lowering CL's being fully explained. There is some guidelines on 0 to 10+. Its only in the C&C Goodman Game modules where I recall even running into CL's so easy that you get to add a bonus to your roll. I don't know, I'll have to read, looking for such specifics. I've found that I mentally add in stuff that isn't in C&C without even really thinking about it.
