GenCon was awesome this year. Despite the ridiculous hotel shortages (again), GenCon continues to be the premier gaming convention which is more of a true gaming event than just a place to go and play some games. The lines for new product by Paizo (Rise of the Runelords), Gale Force Nine (Firefly boardgame), Catalyst Game Labs (Shadowrun 5, and about a dozen other things), and Palladium Books (GenCon exclusive Robotech miniatures) were staggering. Standing in line for more than a hour for just about anything is too much for me. I hope those that braved those lines make a ton in eBay, or really play the shit out of those games they waited for.

I played in one of Todd Gray's Gotland-Ne games on Thursday night. Wow, that dude continues to impress with how well he runs a game, and the feeling of Aihrde he imparts to the players during these con games.

I picked up a couple of TLG modules from the A-series I didn't already have during Thursday Dealer Hall trek, and finally got to see a print copy of Bluffside, the new setting for C&C. The cover artwork by Jason Walton is impressive. I had the privilege of working on this book with Hal Greenberg and Peter Schroeder and was excited to finally see some results. I'm very happy with it, but fair warning; TLG only printed a handful of preview copies specially for GenCon. It is my understanding that there is still some work to be done with it, so it's still not "officially" out yet. I also picked up the newest version of the C&C flip book, which my buddy DP calls the "turn upside down book," because the simple flip book moniker is too simple due to the advanced user-end operational skills needed to read it. ;) Again, the flip book has stunning new artwork by Jason Walton. I picked up my Rune Lore pre-order, and plan to read it over this week sometime. I ended Thursday by stopping by Palladium book and picking up an original piece of art by Chuck Walton (Rifts). His line artwork is so impressive that I know Hollywood or some other aspect of the entertainment industry is going to come calling, and owning an original 18" x 24" piece by him will be a nice feather (or dollar) in my cap in the years ahead. Plus, his asking prices for originals is stunningly low. I almost felt guilty buying it from him.

I got to meet Troll Tim Burns for the first time, and he is a really cool dude. Keep it up man, TLG needs somebody like you to rock this gig at a high level. Chatted up TLG Steve's ear for far too long. Hope I didn't cause the loss of any sales. Sorry bro.

Late Thursday afternoon I got to hang out with a friend I had not seen in some time, the incomparable Bill Webb of Necromancer and FGG. We talked for hours about every subject under the sun and just relaxed our butts off. I think big things are in store for FGG. Keep and eye out.

Then came Friday and Saturday which were nothing but True Dungeon, and hanging with friends I have not seen in some time. We shared many laughs and tipped FAR TOO MANY beverages made specifically for drunken adults. Oh my, there were accidental gay bar adventures, college bars, drinking Kentucky Bourbon Barrel by the pitcher at Scotty's, and running around the streets of Indy checking out the gamers and Motorcycle GP peeps who invaded the downtown.

I was very sad to not be able to participate in Clovis's tournament C&C game, or the Piper's games either. I missed Friday night KADOOSH with Snoring Rock and friends because there simply aren't enough hours in the day. Doing so will probably haunt me for months. Playing in Snoring Rock's off-grid Tegal Manor game is appointment C&C. Saturday morning ArgoForg called me up to get in one of his last minute C&C games at about 10am. I didn't notice the call until too late as I was swimming and didn't see my phone going off. Too bad too because Argo KILLZ at running high-energy C&C.

It was nice to see Jason Vey and Tylermo there at the booth on Sunday. Jason is a cool guy, who loves Rush just as much as me. Nice. Tyler is unstoppable as a Troll salesmen, and a presence of Castles & Crusades.

On Sunday morning I met up with another friend and his beautiful daughter whom I also hadn't seen in a number of years. While talking to them, a musician was playing in the background some sort of harp-like instrument. Her music was beautiful. I dropped her a tip and picked up her card (April D. Porter of Tulstin Troubadours -- http://www.aprylknight.com). I plan to buy a CD or two when I get the chance. I then said a couple of quick goodbyes to the Trolls and picked up some last minute gaming swag. Damn, I forgot to get my 3145 Technical Readout for BattleTech. I'm going to have to wait for months now. Crap.

Loved GenCon again, so much so I already booked my hotel for next year. If you haven't been, you should go to GenCon at least twice (the first time there is so much to learn, that the second time is truly amazing).

That was my GC.

Gen Con was the same blast it ordinarily is for me, although it becomes a little more difficult year when you factor in that I had a seven-month old to help my wife keep occupied, so I had to tone down my usual spending and away-from-home time. It also meant I had to spend late night bar-hopping with the Trolls and keep away from some of my usual off-the-grid fun. But a toned-down time at Gen Con beats damned near any other time hands down.

Thursday was our settle-in day. I didn't have any games to speak of, and didn't buy any tickets to any panels, so me and the wife took Lyric to the marketplace to just walk around, window shop and enjoy ourselves. Still a great time. Got to see some of the big sale items this year (Pathfinder Card Game apparently went absolutely ballistic, and the line around the Fantasy Flight booth made it look like they had something worthwhile as well), and it was great to see the Trolls with a lot of new items out for show. Checked in with Steve, Todd and Tim about the games I was running Friday and Saturday, got a few questions answered and left with a list much longer than I thought of C&C goodies to pick up. This is an every year thing for me.

Friday was the day I was really looking forward to... got to sit in to Piperdog's C&C game with my wife and some newer players to the game, and enjoyed myself immensely. I hardly ever get to actually play my favorite game, as opposed to CKing it, so whenever I can sit in on a C&C game, it makes my Con. From there, it was another brisk walk through the marketplace, a couple smaller buys (I picked up Cityographer, which was something I'd only really marginally considered until I saw how nice it looked) and a stop at the TLG booth to pick up a couple modules and Rune Lore, Bluffside and Free City of Eskadia. I nice influx of new C&C goodness always helps make every year sweeter. Then it was off to the Marriott to run the first of my three adventures for the Trolls, comprising Giant's Rapture. We had a full table and a lot of great personalities. A few of them were first timers, and from what I could tell left with a great feeling of discovery when it came to C&C, and how streamlined it feels compared to other similar games... more than one stopped off at TLG's booth later to pick up the PHB, from what I gather. Everyone really enjoyed themselves, me included.

Saturday started off a little worrisome for me. My wife begged off for the day, so I hit the Con solo with a full plate, running two games and having only a short time in between for lunch, market and pre-game prep. And then, after that, only two people arrived for my 2nd session of the TLG C&C Tourney. I texted Omote to see if he would be interested in sitting in, and one of the players tried calling a couple people, but no luck. Snoring Rock (who was running the same mod) suggested that if worse came to worse, I could help him GM and we could bring the two in to his game, but I felt a little bad for the players that they would get shorted an hour, so we decided to run my game with each of them running two characters and me running a cleric as an NPC. It made for a lot more interaction time, and some damned good role playing, and I think both of them had a blast-- and since both of them showed up for part 3, I felt much better for them. Part three in the afternoon was another full table, and everyone had a lot of fun. A couple from Columbus asked me if I might consider running C&C at Origins, because they feel like there isn't enough of a good C&C/Old School presence there whenever they've tried to get in. May be something to consider, but me and the wife already shell out a small ton at Gen Con, and we don't spend for the hotel since we're local. But Giants were vanquished, everyone had a blast, and although I had to crunch the last couple encounters together to get the mod finished in the time frame, it was a big hit. Couldn't ask for a better end to the day for me.

Sunday was family fun day, and we made it special by bringing my stepson and daughter to Gen Con for the first time. It was a short day for me-- I was dog tired by the end of the weekend, and my sleep's been iffy at best this past week. But they really enjoyed themselves. I stopped in at the TLG booth again and made a quick report of how well the previous day's games went, and thanked them again for making the trek to Indy. Hitting the TLG booth is always one of my favorite things about Gen Con, and just shooting the bull with the guys for a short bit and thanking them for coming to my hometown every Sunday is second nature by now. Bringing the kids was nice-- they were awed and want to come back yearly, now-- but it's a strenuous thing to heft around a 25 lb. baby, a backpack of books, and still have to make sure a pair of early teens don't just wander off, get into loud fights, or get reeled in to trying on corsets. So we called it a day a little early. I was sad that I didn't get to see Omote in person-- that's been a yearly thing for us since I started playing C&C, but at least I got to bend his ear at Who'syerCon earlier. But I did get to see Piperdog and his bros, Clovis, and a whole mess of other people that made for a wonderful time. I wish I'd gotten to spend a bit more time (and a crapton more money) at the Con, but it's always a blast to be there and always a little misty-eyed to see it go again.

But I'll be back next year, gods willing, and most likely running another game or three!

It was a fantastic GenCon 2013. The group that traveled with me left a bit earlier this year, so we checked in on Wednesday evening as opposed to Thursday morning. It was nice getting checked in early and having time to be ready for the big opening day. I did not have game scheduled until Thursday night so I had the entire day to cruise the display floor. I have to add here, that I made a list of things to see and people to meet.

Goodman Games has not had a showing in a while, so I cruised by there and to my happy amazement, John Hershberger (Taco John from Necromancer Games Forums and Black Blade Publishing – The original DM from Caverns of Thracia – fore-runner to Society of Ka-doosh) was manning the booth. We had the chance to re-live some adventure highlights and visit a while. It was good to see him!

I met Todd and Tim at the TLG booth and received last minute details on the adventures I would be running. I gotta say, that the adventures were timed perfectly for the amount of time we had to run them. There were three guys who played in the entire trilogy, and at the end on Saturday, they really gave us the thumbs up on the adventure as well as those who, ran the games.

For anyone who was not aware, Bob Bledsaw II was on hand with Frank Mentzer over at the OSR booth! I was given the opportunity to talk it up with these guys.
Bob gave my step-son an autographed copy of an original print (Judges Guild parchment) player’s map of the City State of the Invincible Overlord. How cool was that? It was really neat to meet both of these pioneers of the industry. Just cool is all I can say!

And then there was the big Friday night game of Tegel. Omote did not show. You shall never be forgiven Mr. Omote; however it made room at the table for Todd Gray to take a seat and try his hand at taking down Ridwick of the Relic (Tegel Manor Liche). In the end, every character was dead or negative; and Todd was the only hope. Initiative was rolled, the liche decided it was time for meteor swarm, but Todd beat the initiative of 7, with an 8. Todd swung, and connected, doing 7 hp of damage. The liche had only 7 left, so it was another photo finish in the manner of Tegel yet again this year! Troll Lord Todd was the last man standing! Ok, Omote, you have one more chance but if you stand us up next year, you are out of the Kadoosh for good!

The convention this year, was the busiest aver for me. I ran 7 grid games and 1 off-grid game and was able to sit in on a Harn World game as a player. This was the best GenCon ever for me. The Troll Lords were so god with having everything ready for us and being so kind as to take time to talk with us and to grant CK-frustrating boons in PHB’s (Steve, one of those saved live in Tegel!).

Fantastic time! If you did not make it, you have to do so. It is worth the crowds and the expense

GenCon was a great time!

I arrived in Indy after 8 PM Wednesday and met friends at a hotel. We went to BARcelona's Tapas Restaurant for a meal and beers. Great food!

My Thursday started with a 9 AM game of RuneQuest 6th edition. The GM ran a game set in Hyboria. I played a Stygian Sorceror so I could test drive the magic system. The game gets an all around thumbs up and I'd play it again. After the game ended I hit the exhibit hall and went straight to the TLG booth where I met Tim Burns and splurged on some C&C gaming goodness. Tim was very cool. I look forward to chatting with him next year. I scoured the hall for a while then met up with Captain Blood for dinner before we went to a AD&D 1st ed. game.

I got to sleep in a bit on Friday and really needed it. Every member of my group that attended GenCon was able to get a seat in the noon Ars Magica game. The game was run by the same guy as last year using the same PCs on a new mission. If you've never played Ars Magica, I highly recommend you give it a try if wizards, roleplay, and the Mythic Europe setting have any appeal to you. Most of us went back to BARcelona's for dinner and beers. Most excellent! Later that evening I was able to get in on a session of The One Ring. This game was in trouble before it started due to it being placed in a small room with 5 other active games. The noise level was almost enough to make me walk. The adventure itself was pretty weak and during a short break about halfway through, one guy left a note that read, "Called to the Gray Havens" and did not return.

On Saturday I played HarnMaster for the first time and it ended up being my "Game of the Convention!" The combat is a wee crunchy but it works very well. I will certainly be looking for more chances in the future to play HarnMaster and may even try my hand at running a demo. I ended up dropping by the Columbia Games booth and picking up some Harn goodness and chatting a bit with the folks there.

Most of my group met for a quick lunch then I was back to the gaming with All For One - Regime Diabolique. Set in the 1600's Musketeer era France, the PCs fight the supernatural 'things in the night' about which the populace is ignorant and those in power wish to keep that way. Blending musketeers with supernatural horror really appealed to me when I registered. Unfortunately, this session was my "Dud of the Convention." The GM knew the rules but that's about as far as it went. When running a game set in France, I expect the GM to have a basic understanding of French pronunciation (not the language itself!) to give some flavor to spoken (i.e. accented) interactions. A few of us, myself included, knew a few French words and could scatter them into the RP. Every time the GM spoke in character it jarred the scene since the rest of us were having fun with cheesy French accents. The first 1.5 hours was little more than opposed dice pool rolls with the group fighting off wolves. I was bored. The game of musketeers with supernatural horror was turned into a G-rated episode with a few instances reaching PG due to the GM having his 12-yr old kid at the table splitting time between playing and drawing manga. Had I known the level of supernatural horror was to be the equivalent of Chutes-n-Ladders I would've found another game. Oh well. C'est la vie!

After the game, several of us loaded up in a cab and went a few miles down the road to a draft house to enjoy some beers and escape the noise of the motorcycles. I like Harleys as much as the next guy but I don't want to try shouting over them in conversation. ;)

On Sunday I swept the exhibit hall one last time and made another stop by the TLG booth. I had a nice conversation with Todd Gray, picked up yet more C&C gaming goodness, and was able to chat with Steve for a few minutes. I look forward to seeing Tim, Todd, and Steve next year (Davis, too, if he attends)!

Dude, that is awesome! The editor at Columbia Games is my brother in law. He ran a game Saturday! Was your DM named Brent? Columbia ran a game for our group as well and I went home with some Harn maps and castles. It is crunchy on rules and hit locations, but fun.

Sounds like an awesome time. Thanks to everyone who's "reported!" :) Keep 'em comin'!

Ancalagon - I'd like to hear more on the particulars of RQ6 and Harnmaster. Especially the latter, since I've been considering purchasing it (after many years on the fence). How does the "crunchiness" compare to games like GURPS or RM (if you have nay experience with those).

I don't have a report, personally (and sadly), but my buddy Scott went and picked up a hundred dollars worth of C&C. He got all the new C&C stuff for me, with the exception of the new flip book. I'm anxiously waiting that UPS shipment (and should be here tomorrow :D)!

Harnmaster takes out hit points and settles it by a percentage of where you are hit, head, foot, leg, abdomen, neck, etc. You take slight damage, moderate, or heavy. A heavy hit to the neck is death. It is a skill-based game so there are no levels. You just increase percentages by practicing those things. Nice system but crunchy.

I like it.

Omote, I appeciate your kind words. I'm an unstoppable rambler. As for a presence of C&C...more like TLG's Shaggy (from Scooby Doo) look-a-like. Lol. Good to see you again.

Hi, Snoring Rock! My DM was Walt McAtee and he was "da bomb!" at getting new players into the Harn mindframe. I snagged the Rethem kingdom material with assorted castle and keep maps. Those maps can be used anywhere!

My session of HarnMaster utilized the 3rd edition of the rules from Columbia Games.

Skills, both combat and non-combat, are rated as a percentage and you must roll equal or less than to succeed. Various skills are rated at an Actual mastery Level (AML) and Effective Mastery Level (EML). The EML is what is used after penalties are applied.

HarnMaster takes into account encumbrance. Encumbrance penalties come in the form of negative percentage modifiers to actions. Its really just common sense and it works. The more stuff carried / worn will slow down the character. A character must be careful about how much stuff they want to keep on their person. A way to get around too much encumbrance is to have pack mules and a handler to keep up with them. Simple, right!

Harnmaster uses Marginal/Critical Successes and Failures for attacks, defending, and skill checks. To make an attack, a player rolls percentile dice. If the result <= the EML of the weapon skill in question then the attack is a Success. Anything over is a Failure. The defender may roll to defend using whatever option he chooses (e.g. shield, using another weapon like a sword, evading, etc). The player defending rolls percentile dice and if the result <= the EML of the defense in question, the defense is a Success. Anything over is a Failure. Now here is a twist I really enjoyed: if the Success or Failure is evenly divisible by 5 then it is a Critical. So any roll percentile roll ending in a '0' or '5' is a Critical. A Critical result, whether attacking or defending, beats a Marginal result. A Marginal Success defense will block / stop a Marginal Success attack.

When attacking, a character may try for the best chance to hit (all locations possible), or he may Aim High or Aim Low. Being more selective by Aiming High and Low imposes a penalty to-hit but if you're going after a specific area like the neck, head, etc then Aiming High might be the way to go since there are fewer hit locations to determine where the blow lands on a hit.

HarnMaster characters do not possess hit points. Wounds suffered are tracked by Injury Levels. IIRC the levels are Minor (rated as a 1), Serious (rated as 2-3), Grievous (goes up to 4?), and Mortal (usually a 5). The number represent how many d6 you roll for damage. In addition to the sum of the rolled d6s, the weapon used has a base amount of damage. The total potential damage is applied to a hit location's protection (armor, etc). Armor does not increase an AC as in C&C and (A)D&D but serves as damage reduction as in WFRP2e. If any damage gets through the armor then an injury is inflicted. Each injury results in a penalty to actions since getting sliced, bludgeoned, pierced, etc. tends to make folks function at less than optimum performance. ;)

The injury levels are tracked. Each level is represented by a d6. Injury levels stack so if Loxa the mercenary takes a M1 to the calf (minor injury for 1d6) then a S2 to the chest (serious injury for 2d6), the DM could then call for the player to make an Endurance test by rolling 3d6. If the roll exceeds Endurance the the character passes out (but does not necessarily die and can possibly revive on his own albeit still injured).

Combat in HarnMaster is damned dangerous and I love it for being that way!

That's the basics on what I recall from my first HarnMaster session. Its crunchy but once you get your head wrapped around it, the system flows very well and is, for me at least, an extremely fun way of handling and visualizing the brutality of combat. 8-)

Let me preface this by saying sorry that we missed a few events/seminars I had plans on going but we had some issues with the hotel and just getting older. I need to specifically say sorry to Matt Forbeck who I had 3 events to see him and missed all 3. I know you had family with you or I would of tried to meet outside of those.

Also if I missed you in the update I apologize, so many great things happened it was not intentional, trust me.

OK, now that the disclaimer is done, onto the recap--

Wednesday: Got in around 11AM, went to the hall and mingled a bit and got our passes from the Troll Lord team. Mingled, walked and had some nice impromptu meets with Angus Abranson, and Stan! (Brown), Ed Bourelle to name a few. We went around and saw a lot of the booths, and as the feet got a rest towards the end of the day we saw the booth The Troll and Toad booth take a tumble, it was bad on the equipment but nobody got injured.

What we missed: The Diana Jones Awards.

Thursday: Got over to the con around 8AM, hung at the TLG booth for a bit even answered some early bird questions about C&C, and then we started our move, my friend Brian picked up the new Firefly RPG and had Margaret Weiss sign it, she was pleasant as always. When we got there we saw a sad Chris Pramas outside with a bunch of boxes so like a superhero (Mutants and Masterminds reference) swept in and carried a few boxes in. Met with Simon at Pelgrane Press to discuss our current projects and 13th Age as well as Erik Mona from Paizo and Steve C at the Trolls booth. Signed a copy of Bluffside for C&C for a very nice and loyal C&C customer. Met up with Derrick L and spoke to him for a bit about C&C and the future of Samurai Sheepdog and TLG. Spoke to Ken Whitman as well and said hi to Larry Elmore.

Had some discussions about Bluffside and some other projects with the boys over at TLG and went well, have to ask the Troll Lord if the feeling was mutual. Said hi to Monte Cook, who I have not seen or worked with in about 10 years, it was great to see him again.

Went to a seminar about screenwriting led by Daniel G and was impressed.

What we missed: Mayfair Event

Friday: The Awakened signing and breakfast, all the authors at GenCon (less Erik Scott de Bie who had a seminar) showed and we spent 3 hours signing laughing and just having a blast, we decided it will be an annual GenCon event, with less signing and more laughing. Ed Greenwood, Colin McComb, Jaleigh Johnson, Clinton Boomer and myself. We also had Kevin Glusing a Kickstarter pledger and upcoming writer for the setting join us as well. I hope Kevin had as good of a time as we did. Colin was a blast to sit next to, it felt like we had been friends for years, we swapped some embarrassing stories so I won't let mine slip if he keeps his mouth shut. I bought a Wayne Reynolds limited edition book and he was there and resigned it and goblinized mine, he is so mellow and great, he is someone I would like to work with in the future.

We went to a great seminar about novel outlines and Erik Scott de Bie and Brandon Sanderson were both great (as well as the other panelists).

What we missed: Two panels (one with Matt Forbeck-see above for apology)

Saturday: We wrapped up GenCon (leaving on Sunday AM), with congratulating the ENnie winners, stopping by a few companies and individuals and talked shop amongst those spoken to: Brian Berg, Stan!, Jason Engle, Angus Abanson, Bruce Cordell (who took a selfie with me-LOL), and finally was able to say hi in person to Shanna Germain (so pleasant, always smiling). We playtested D7D Next and i got to catch up to Mike Mearls so that was an extra treat.

We ended the trip with a dinner at Shula's with the Troll Lord team, Bill Webb, Joesph Goodman, and Aldo Ghiozzi-it was a great way to end the trip.

Thank you Indy, GenCon and everyone there for letting me have such a great time. See ya next year.

My wife and I are the couple from the Columbus area and this was our first year at GenCon. We only came up on Saturday to check the con out. In fact we left after I got off work on Friday night and drove all night, sleeping a couple hours at a roadside rest area, to make our 9am game with SnoringRock. We had a great game and the follow up by ArgoForg that folded both groups together ran very well. We had a great time. My only complaint that we were tucked back in small rooms and the noise level was HORRIBLE. The venders room at GenCon was really cool. Picked up the flipbook for when I am running C&C and the Codex Celtarum. We go to Origins every year and would love to see some of you guys come up (or down) to Columbus. I have never ran at a con before but I am half tempted to run some at Origins. We will be at GaryCon again if at all possible, I think it is my new favorite. Anyplace were they bring food and beer to your table while you game is a plus. We might try to make GenCon next year, especially now that we knowthe area better. Where to eat, parking etc. I definately will not drive all night, game all day, and drive back home without sleep again. Getting too old for that.
