Flank vs back attack

Post by jdizzy001 »

If a group flanks a baddy in the front and back, does the pc in back get both a flank and back atk bonus for a total of +3? Or do they just receive the greater of the 2 bonuses?

I would just use the better of the two bonuses.

No. One or the other. You are either attacking someones flank or, back.

See below -- flanking is dependent on facing. The flank is the rear oblique of the target.

Code: Select all

C&C, AD&D:
           <front>
             ORC
         FL   R    FL

3.5e:
               1
             ORC
               2
In 3.5 and Pathfinder, a flank is a scenario in which 2 characters on opposite sides of the target are in a position to threaten the target, giving both a bonus. If you play with this version of flank, I guess it's up to you what happens!
